A joy on trails and off

I have been wearing the On Cloudventure Peaks for about a week and have put them through their paces on pretty much all surfaces - sidewalks, treadmill, groomed trail, and the western route up Green Mountain in Boulder which offered everything with a combination of pea gravel, dirt, mud, rocks, muddy rocks, roots, log stairs, large rock scramble, and slush, snow and ice. I find the Cloudventure Peaks to be light and responsive. They performed well on all surfaces but I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did on snow and slush - they have nice grip on all but the most icy surfaces (and part of that might have been that I am still getting comfortable in icy conditions). They best part was how the felt on my feet - light, comfortable and they literally make you want to run. This is definitely one of my favorite trail shoes in a long time. I tend to like a half size larger running show generally, but thing I noticed is that while the size 8 worked great on flat and rolling trails, on a trail with lots of large rocks and more severe ups and downs I think I would liked a half size smaller, I felt my foot moved around a little too much even with some creative lacing. Bottomline: I am looking forward to many more runs in this shoe!

Well rounded running shoe

I ran on different terrains at varying distances. I also wore this shoe during a casual weekend outing. This is a lightweight, supportive, stable shoe that works very well for both trail and road running. The shoelaces keep in place nicely without using any special knots. The color was brighter than I expected, which can make it challenging to wear as a casual shoe. The shoe seemed to fit when I first tried it on. During the first wear, I was concerned that the shoe might actually be too small because my right big toe was achy a few hours into wearing the shoe. However, during my last run with it, my toe did not bother me much and the shoe was more comfortable so I think there is a short break in period that is needed.

Shoe Made for Speed on Trails

I ran in these shoes four times (between 3 and 6 miles each time) since receiving them: twice on a treadmill, once outside on asphalt, and once in a forest preserve trail (mainly crushed limestone with some hills). This is not a shoe for someone who needs extra cushioning or stability. Instead, this running shoe is perfect for trail running in all sorts of weather. Pros: super light-weight construction, breathable fabric that resists water and dirt, bouncy feel, and shoe helps propel forward motion while running. Cons: not as much support due to thin fabric and minimalist design, seems to have a lower heal drop (than my standard Brooks Glycerin) which may have cause my calves to feel sore, and not ideal for running on streets or treadmills (due to the lack of cushioning and support).

Lightweight Trail Runner

This minimalist style shoe offers excellent traction on loose gravel, and holds well on slick rock. The outer appears water resistant, and may even be water proof, but I have yet to run with them in the rain. They did keep my feet dry and mud free on a puddle filled day through some packed trails. There is a lack of ankle support, but I did not have any trouble with these shoes. If you are looking for an exceptionally lightweight trail runner, these are the ones to beat.

Light and comfortable

I ran on a variety of trials right after I received these shoes: pavement, flat gravel, gentle rolling hills, and highly technical rocky ascents and descents. Throughout all my runs, this neutral shoe held up really well. PROS: Light. Breathable. True-to-fit. Great traction. Comfortable. These shoes are incredibly light and airy. (I totally get the whole “cloud” image.) They fit my feet really well right out of the box (wide toes and narrow heels). My toes had plenty of room to move around in without feeling like they were too loose. My feet stayed firmly in my shoes with no pounding on the front of the toes during steep descents and the lightness really showed its advantage on the inclines—my feet were easy to lift and maintain momentum. The grip on the treads never let me down. I felt confident running up and down the technical terrain with loose rocks and some sand. Another pro in my book are the laces: thin, sturdy, and a longer length to allow for double knots with ease (yet not too long). CONS: The tread is tough to get used to. Some runs I loved the feeling of the loops under my feet (and they protected well against the rocks and doors on trail); and yet other runs I could definitely feel them on impact. Not so much that they were uncomfortable, but I like to zone out during runs and let my mind wander and I couldn’t always do that when I was aware of the tread.

A real GOAT

My first introduction to On running shoes were a pair of Cloudracer road running shoes that I picked up at my local running store back in 2014. They were a fantastic pair of road racers and my first impression of the Cloudventure Peak is that they seem to be the current trail equivalent -- a lightweight, responsive, race-ready shoe. The first thing I noticed after lacing up the Cloudventure Peak was how well they fit. I have a low volume foot with a narrow heel, so with most shoes I'm constantly battling heel slippage on the trail. I couldn't believe how these fit like a glove across the instep and heel while still having a comfortable toe box with just the right amount of room. So far I've taken these on a few short runs in various conditions and continue to be impressed. The only complaint I have managed to come up with is that the soles can be super slick on the exposed limestone on the trails in my area if they're even the slightest bit damp. While On shoes are known for their innovative CloudTec cushioning (which I am a fan of), I think my favorite part about these shoes is the upper. It is more similar to my softshell rain jacket than it is any other pair of shoes I've ever owned. And I believe most of the great fit is owed to this upper. I wasn't sure how I felt about the look of these shoes at first, but after seeing how well they feel and perform they have completely won me over!
