Great hydration pack for mountain biking!

For context, I've been slowly upgrading my mountain bike kit and purchased the Raptor 14 during one of REI's member sales to replace an old (old) Jansport Odyssey 39 + a Camelbak reservoir (a bit overkill for mountain biking, but it is what I had). So far, the Raptor is far superior. The reservoir design is a bit different than Camelbak's screw-on caps. That first use, it took a bit of a leap of faith to trust that a single fold at the top would hold 2.5L of water when turned upside down. But, it does! And, I also like the bite-valve design better than Camelbak's. I always had to use their inline on/off valve to prevent leaks/drips on my Camelbak... while the Osprey doesn't even have an on/off valve. Hopefully the leaks do not start too soon. The pack has plenty of space for the essentials tools, spare tubes, an air pump, first aid supplies... and enough leftover if you want to throw in some sandwiches or frosty beverages. There are also some nifty pockets on the waist strap, I have been using them for jelly beans and sour patch kids. So... if it's the bee's knees (bees' knees?), why 4 stars? Honestly, if I could do 4.5, I would. A few downers... The magnetic catch for the bite valve tubing is not very strong... so the tube ends up flopping around a fair amount. And, the actual straps for the chest and waist feel a bit inadequate, too thin and the clasps could be a bit heavier duty. Granted... this could be due to the fact that I was using a hiking pack for cycling for a few years, but it would be nice to take a few of those design cues for the future. I tend to think that people who choose to ride with a large hydration pack like this are of the 'always be prepared' sort of mindset... and therefore less concerned with trading durability for a few extra grams of weight. Overall... I'm super happy I went with this pack and if you are interested in it enough to read all of this... then I suggest you go ahead and pick it up!

My Mule was destroyed by fire, so I went to REI to get a new one for a ride the next day, and they were closing (7pm on a Sat WT Heck?) and said they didn't have CamelBak any more cause there was some upper management fight or something, so only Osprey,, so goes what used to be a Coop, now a Corp. Bad: 1) The water pouch has a really complicated folding top that needs a plastic slider to seal. 2) The water pouch doesn't quick disconnect from the tube easily. 3) Tool caddy, thing is really odd, who needs that? 4) Water Tube only goes down one side, the right. 5) magnetic holder for tube is in odd place on Chest Strap. 6) Wider than MULE 7) No holders for the extra strap lengths. 8) Retail price is 35% more than retail price of Mule. Good: 1) High quality like all Osprey Products. 2) Almighty Warranty. 3) Helmet holder is nice design. 4) Big, maybe too big. 5) belt side pouches

I LOVE THIS PACK

It is super comfy and the ribbed back padding makes this much cooler to wear than previous models. You'll never notice the slight weight gain compared to other packs once you're riding, and you can also put a small bladder in it if 2.5L is more than you need. All of the pockets and pouches seem to be just where you want them to be for your mountain biking stuff and the ability to expand the back out for extra things occasionally makes this perfect for all types of outdoor usage. I love this pack and am super happy with it. My one and only recommendation is that it needs a quick release hose upgrade kit. You can purchase those for about $15 and then taking the bladder out is even that much easier. And inserting the quick release into the provided tube also extends the overall length of the tube just enough so it properly reaches the stationary magnet because the tube, originally, is about 1" too short. Or you can also buy a separate Osprey strap magnet, if the stationary one isn't working for you.

Great backpack/ pour hydration bladder design

Backpack Quality - 5* The usually top quality stitching and materials. Feels bombproof like you would expect. Backpack design - 4* Great organization, plenty of pockets. 2 exterior pockets for wet gear. 2 large hip pockets which is great. Compresses nicely. There are thin pockets in the main compartment to hold a bike pump. Tool pouch on bottom is nice touch. Only knock is the material the main compartment and the bladder is really thin nylon, so if the bladder is filled with cold water, you get condensation in the main compartment. Bladder - 0* You cannot fill the bladder unless you have 3 hands. If you watch the video on Osprey's website, it literally shows someone holding it open with 2 hands and the water coming magically from the sky. The result of doing it by yourself is a frustrating mess. The bite valve is fine.

Excellent MTB Pack

This pack is awesome! After some adjustments I love the magnetic holder. At first it was a bit tight and would come unclipped but after adjusting the bladder to the correct side etc. the clip works awesome. The bite valve works great. Big improvement over my last one. I love the included tool roll. I can fit my large 29er tubes a light jacket and everything I need for day rides. One of my favorite features that initially I didn't care about is the helmet clip. I use this all the time now! This thing is really comfortable and I tend to carry too much but it takes it all and I hardly know its there. Breathability is great. I love It!

Great quality, design, and comfort.

I think Osprey hit a home run with this one. I can use it for short or long mtn bike rides, day hikes, and more. I got this to replace an Osprey Synchro which was too small. This fits great, is super comfortable, holds my full-face helmet and pads. It also has a great hidden pocket. Design allows it to rest more weight on the hips and stays solidly planted on downhill sections and all the bumps that would bounce my old CamelBack all over. Bladder works great too.

Arizona Trail Approved!

I used the Raptor on my AZT 300 ride for 5 days of really tough riding. The pack did an incredible job expanding during resupply stops and has fantastic organization options for compartmentalizing and providing quick access to layers or snacks. A wind jacket and gloves fit perfectly in the rear stash area. The cinch adjustments keep things tight while expanding well. You can carry a surprising amount even with a full bladder! Chest and waist straps secure great. Handy zipper snack pouches on waist band. Small pockets for securing valuables or wallet etc. helmet holder for hike a bike sections. Top notch product!! 5'10"" 170 lbs fit great.

Excellent and flexible pack for bikes of all types

This is an excellent backpack that was designed for mountain biking but I use for motorcycle trail riding. Its a great size allowing me to fit tools, food, first aid, and extra layers inside. The straps on the outside allow me to pack so much more onto this bag than it has any business carrying. The straps and hip belt are all very comfortable with a load and stay in place really well. The tool roll in the bottom is great, especially for small mountain bike tools, but I have a few moto tools that are too large so they live in the pack. For a pack this size, the organization is incredible and I have no qualms with the pack. I love it so much I tend to use it as my primary day hiking pack as well. Its pretty durable as its been on me during a few spills on the bike so I'm overall impressed by the quality of the pack. The hydration pouch and how it threads through the shoulder strap is fantastic. Osprey is my favorite backpack brand so its no surprise to me this pack is high quality and feature rich for its size.

Osprey has may nice features over my camelbak's

This Raptor has alot of great features. First off the Ospeys reservoir is super easy to get in/out of the pack and just as easy to fill ( if you've ever struggled with Camelbak's reservoirs Ospry has fixed this issue). I plan on getting a 3 liter reservoir soon for my longer rides. I'm still trying to figure out if I like there "bit valve" and I do wish it had a on/off valve to stop potential leaks. The storage is well thought out and I really like the external opening tool storage (no more digging to the bottom of my pack). This pack is lighter than my camelbak (and doesn't need the fancy Air Foil padding). I like the Osprey's reservoir Way Better than my camelbak's and wish I would have bought a Ospry years ago.

Best day pack ever

I’ve owned the Raptor 14 for six years and love everything about it. It fits very comfortably. I rarely use it mountain biking and use it more as a daypack for hiking, going as long as 16 mile all-day hikes. The magnetic bite valve clip is a nice amd I didn’t realize all packs didn’t come with that until I went to look at a bigger pack for backpacking. I’ve kept the hydration bladder clean although once I forgot about it but it cleaned up well even though I thought it was beyond saving. The pack has a very thick and durable top strap for carrying or hanging. I cannot say enough good things about this pack. I’m looking at the Osprey Synchro to add to my backpack repertoire as one that would carry a little more. I have a big family with. Young kids and often carry some of their stuff and it’s very similar to the Raptor. I’d buy this pack over and over again.

Awesome Pack

Took this out on my mountain bike today and it felt great. It held in place, didn't ever feel like it was shifting even on the descents. Loaded with tools and water it weighed 8.8 lbs and it still had a ton more room for storage if you want.

the ideal day pack is a cycling pack?!

I've been looking high and low for the ideal daypack: something that can carry two 32 oz bottles as well as a hydration reservoir, smaller than 20L, hip belt to take some weight off shoulders, a frame that allows for air to pass thru but doesn't have the squeaking a lot of suspended back w/ metal frames have. I've been looking, trying, buying daypacks for the last 7 years. My mistake was looking solely at hiking daypacks. In comes the Raptor 14: the curve is meant to accommodate a cyclist's back, but the curve = airflow for a hiker. It meets all the requirements I was looking for. My ONLY wish is I wish the hip belts were sturdier (like the Talon)! My torso is 17-18" and this pack is perfect for me.
