Cause my son to wreck
Got this for my son. Grip slides off as he rides. Taken it to REI and they said they fixed it a still slides off. When he is in the lowest gear and hits a bump on the trail, the rear derailler hanger jumps and gets stuck in the spoke causing him to wreck. They replaced rear derailleur hanger. Still happens. The tire on this bike is 3 inches and is extremly closed the the hanger. Still waiting on solution besides not setting limit screw so he cant shift into the lowest gear.
Watch out looks very nice BUT!!
1. REI* Known issue!!! bike will not accept A kickstand STORE put it on and keep loosing and falling off causing bike to fall over!!who makes a kids bike Without a kickstand why would you have a child throw a bike on the ground every time they get off of it. VERY DISAPPOINTED. 2. Several people have complained on components being cheap 100% AGREE. 3. The (looks)are much better than the quality and the durability of this bike. Members should Be aware Love the store. 1st MAJOR ISSUE HOPEFULLY the last
Great trail bike
I purchased this bike so that my son could hit the local trails with me. The wide tires and hydraulic disc brakes gave my son confidence to try more challenging trails. The grip shift is easy to use; this was my son's first exposure to a bike with gears. Small issue....the rear derailleur hanger is easily bent. I've straightened it a few times. Always make sure your child lays the bike down on the non drive side (a good habit to get into no matter what). bike is a little heavy, it is what it is. i thought about changing out the bars and seat post for carbon, but at the end of the day, he'll be moving on to a 26" bike soon enough.
Great 24' mountain bike
Very impressed with this particular version of the 24' REV DRT bike. Very well equipped for a beginner bike, specially the hydraulic disk brakes, and the wide-tires. My son gained so much confidence from the wide handlebar. Two reasons I'm not giving it a 5-star rating: One, the twist-shifter grip, that has been nothing but trouble (specifically the shifter-grip not staying put) finally gave up on it and upgraded to a lever-shifter. Two, the bike as a whole is too heavy, 31lbs! that's as heavy as my full suspension mountain bike. Other than that, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend.
Four Star 24”
As the other reviewers have noted this bike has some good features frame geometry, brakes with adjustable reach, decent front shock for the price. It has some weak points, but if you can get it on sale you will have room for upgrades. Upgraded to SRAM X-4 trigger shifter and derailleur, Lock on handle grips, platform pedals and the Maxxis 2.4 tires setup tubeless look awesome. Most importantly the kid loves it.
Great MTB For Kids!
Great MTB for kids. I read that others found this bike heavy. We are knew to MTB, so this could be a true statement that others are making but these bikes worked for us. We have a 9 and 7 year-old that purchased these bikes, and they are enjoying riding them. Our boys are on the lighter end of average weights. While our 7 year-old is tall for his age, our 9 year-old is smaller for his age. We seem to run the gamut in regards to rider size and height. Both boys also were not expert bikers as they only did it occasionally before we purchased these. They really loved them and have taken them on all terrains and on all of our toad trips. They have not done single track with me, but they have bikes up steep mountain hills on various surfaces. My lack of understanding of bikes and other model types may contribute to this statement, but the weight of the bike did not appear to be an issue for both of them. I would have expected them to feel tired walking up those hills based on their age and strength. Both of them did struggle at times and walked their own bikes when it was steep, but I am seeing their growth move exponentially on these bikes. They are able to go noticeably longer on steeper hills almost monthly...and this is with owning these two new bikes for about 2-3 months. Would highly recommend these bikes! Love how REI does the tune up...we definitely needed that for the two, new bikes to tighten some things up! Boys loved it after those tweaks. Happy Riding!
Great bike but with glitches
My 11 yr old son absolutely loves this bike. It has great components for the price. Unfortunately I'm making a list of problems I'm hoping REI will rectify. First the tire had a pinch blow-out on the way to a bike park after two days (riding in the street). Tire/inner tube size are very hard to find. Once on the dirt, my son says he can't get traction. Can't find other tires this size. The chain has come off many times. Finally the grips come loose and the rubber split. Will be bringing the bike in for the 30 day tune-up and hopefully REI can address these issues. Would hate to return this bike!.
Very Capable Youth MTB
My 9yr old son has sent this bike down everything from green, blue and black mtb trails without issue. Most of which where flow trails with 4ft+ kickers and tabletops. Would buy again. We did add some better pedals and used Cannondale padded handlebar tap for better grips. But I did the same upgrades on my high end mtb..
Poor quality components that can't be fixed
We bought this bike for our 9 year old. It lasted about 1 year before major mechanical issues. The derailuer is flimsy and can easily bend into the spokes if you are not careful. It the bike is actually ridden on mountain bike trails it can't handle the terrain. The real kicker was when the back cassette freewheel broke and could not be replaced. The only option was to rebuild the back wheel because REPLACEMENT WHEELS ARE NOT AVAILABLE!. Building a replacement wheel would cost more than the bike cost new. AVOID this bike.
Great bike for 10 year old
My son loves riding this bike. It's high quality for the price point and the hydraulic disc brakes are a nice touch and make it easy for a kid to brake. Much nicer than the name brand "mid fat" that we tried at the store. For reference he's 10 and about 54 inches. I would definately recommend a little less tire pressure to smooth out the ride. He feels like the shifting is easy. I wish there was a place to mount a water bottle cage. 9/10 Year Old Comments: It can ride off of stuff and it still feels fine. It's pretty fast.
