Ideal Hardtail?

Absolutely love this bike, the plus tires (running ~22 psi rear and ~19 psi front) soak up the majority of the chattering that can occur on root/rock heavy trails, and the front fork takes care of the rest. The tires do work (to a limited degree) in the soft/wet snow we still have at some higher elevations here. Its no fat bike, but I've done a couple snowy sections (both climbs and descents) with considerably more success than would have been possible on a 2.2/2.3" bike tire. Shifting is snappy and responsive, as is braking--though not abrupt. The geometry is excellent, at least for my body type, keeps my weight where it needs to be on climbs as well as descents, and the short chainstays keep turns/adjustments tight and playful. I've only gotten a few rides in, but I have intentionally sought to experiment with the gamut of trail conditions I see around here. I haven't found any downsides or issues whatsoever that aren't intrinsic to the entire hardtail category. Couldn't be happier with my choice! I did a test ride of a Cannondale Cujo and found that, while they appear similar, the Timberjack immediately felt better in every respect.

I love this bike

Great bike and I couldn’t be more pleased with the purchase and service. I bought it online and had it shipped tot the store. They put it together and walked me through a couple of the basics. The bike rides great. Totally balanced and super fast. The drop seat and front fork handle all types of downhills and rough terrain.

2019 Salsa Timberjack SLX

I pre ordered this bike the minute I saw it on REI, I wanted the 2018 last year, but my size wasn’t available any longer. I received the bike a couple of days ago and have been riding around the neighborhood so I haven’t ridden on any trails yet here in Colorado. I can tell you that the minute I get on the bike I have a permanent smile, it’s light, nimble and so much fun. The reach on the medium is perfect for my 5’8” self, I was a bit nervous that the medium would be on the larger side for me as the medium is for people 5’8” to 6’0”. It rides smaller than it is IMO. The Shimano SLX shifts effortlessly, the stock drop post does the job nicely. The Recon fork doesn’t have a remote lockout, only on the fork itself which is a little bit of a bummer considering my CO-DRT 2.1 had it. Anyway, I suppose it’s not that big of a deal, easy enough to lean forward and twist the knob. The only thing that I was really disappointed in (so far) is that the stock WTB tires are not tubeless ready although the rims are for some reason? I got a call from the the bike mechanic saying they couldn’t make these OEM tires tubeless. So I opted for the Maxxis EXO 27.5+ 2.8 which added 225.00 or so after they were installed, but she’d a half a pound or so. Other than that, the bike is gorgeous, I actually like the Maxxis EXO a lot better than the WTB tubeless version I had on my DRT 2.1 so I’ll take it as a win for the bike, less of a win for the pocketbook.

Great Bike!!

Got the SLX Timberjack a few months ago- and really love it. Shifting is crisp, the braking is phenomenal , and it's a comfortable ride. But , I had 2 problems: one of the water bottle braze ons was stripped and both tires flatted the 1st time I took it off road. REI techs fixed the braze on when I brought it in for the initial (free) tune up, and no more flats since I switched to tubeless. I highly recommend this bike. But know that you'll have to upgrade the tires if you want to do much off road, especially in AZ.

I love this bike!

I’ve wanted a salsa for a long time. My wife got me this for our anniversary and it’s been the best present I could have gotten! This bike is perfect for fast single track and fire roads. The only upgrade I would recommend is the tires the side walls are pretty thin.
