I'm very disappointed and confused. I gave two stars because the fit of the medium tall was excellent for me (6'3" 175 lbs.), but on my first walk today in the rain I noticed water was getting through. It was a three-mile walk and it was not a heavy rain. I got home and removed the jacket and sure enough the upper back portion was wet on the inside where rain water had seeped through. Just before going out on the walk I had removed the GoreTex tag that says "guaranteed to keep you dry". Now looking at other reviews I see a number of similar examples. I love the fit. I don't understand why with Gore-Tex they can't make it to truly keep me dry. Ugh.
I purchased this specifically to do two weeks of geological field work in the Kola Peninsula of Russia. The location is above the Arctic Circle and I was there in June and July. It rained most of the time and daytime high temperatures were about 12-14 C. I was completely comfortable in this jacket day and "night" - it did not leak and it stopped the wind perfectly. It will be going with me for my next field work as well.
There are no vents in this jacket. There are 3 pockets. REI is saying that pockets can double as vents. That is super dishonest. That essentially makes every jacket ever created a vented jacket. If you run around with your pockets open all your stuff will fall out. They are either pockets or vents, they can't be both. Also the location of of vents and pockets are different because they serve different purposes. nobody wants vents on their hips and pockets in their arm pits... I'm very disappointed in REI. Why are you being so dishonest and making your customers upset.
These are packable, durable and kept me dry in very wet conditions.
the first light rain i wore it in i was super happy, however after about 30 to 40 minuet's in a mist i began to fee the water seeping through the jacket. The seams were leaking and large patches of the back, chest and hood were soaked through. The fit was fine but you would have better luck staying dry in a tee shirt than this jacket. I am not sure if they used actual Gore-Tex or just pout the name on the sleeve but i doubt the material is actual Gor-Tex.
I bought this jacket because I'm tired of my other jackets that claim to be water-resistant failing on me. This one fit the bill and is very comfortable. I've been out in the elements on walks and hikes and no "bleed through". The hood is a bit large and I think a Velcro adjuster for the back would help with fit. It already has an elastic pull, but that only brings it in from the sides, an option to pull the tip up/down would complete this 100%
Well, the idea it doesn’t block rain is not true. I had it out in moderate rain and it blocs the rain totally. I was bone dry. But, like almost any rain jacket, if you’ve got it over only a shirt and you’re out in moderate rain for an hour or so, there’s going to be a little condensation. That’s unavoidable with any jacket. I live in the pacific NW and I’ve had many rain jackets over the years, and if you’re in a downpour for a long time there’s always some condensation that will build up on the inside. I have a higher end ski jacket with a thick shell and if I’m in a downpour for a while it’ll be damp. That’s not rain getting through it’s condensation. The more layers you have on the less condensation there will be. This is why your head will get much more damp under hoods : there’s no layer blocking the heat. So people who are out jogging for example in moderate rain with only a tshirt on are perceiving it as not being waterproof, but none of that is rain actually getting through. It’s getting clammy and wet from body heat and condensation. When I had it on in moderate rain for about 10 minutes I had a compressive baselayer and long sleeve crew shirt on. Nothing made it through nor was there condensation. Now, if I was in moderate rain for an hour, yeah, probably some condensation is going to build up. But let’s say I add a thicker midlayer over the baselayer. That will likely prevent most if not all condensation So, the shell works perfectly fine. No water is going to get through it. As for the hood, people are saying you need a velcro pull to pull the hood back so you can see. But not only is there a cord in the back you can use to restrain it, but there’s also a visor you can flip up, which is something I’ve never seen before, and a pretty good addition. You can get a rounded form fitting hood by adjusting the cords, and then flip the visor up or down. By flipping the visor back and restraining it with the drawcord in the back, you can get pretty much any position you want with the hood. Finally, it’s a pretty delicate jacket. If you’re thinking about chopping wood with this or some other activity putting a lot of strain on it, it’s not really designed for that. It’s something you have to be a little careful with. Even leaning over and stretching the fabric will weaken the composition. It is a lightweight, form fitting light activity jacket for walking or hiking in the rain. I use it in the city doing chores in moderate rain with a baselayer and midlayer. Works well for that purpose. I’m 6’5” 185 and the medium tall fit me perfectly. It’s very long in the sleeves. Usually with clothes the sleeves are on the short side, these sleeves give you a surplus of length. That’s really the main reason I bought it. The fact that both the sleeves and the length were longer than other tall sizes
This is not the best ventilated jacket. For example, no pit zips. It can get clammy inside with real exertion so probably not great for running or cycling. On the other hand, I really like it for walking, camping, etc. I tried several rain shells and settled on this one. Only used in light drizzle so far. The tall sizes are legitimately tall and have seriously long sleeves. Thank you REI! Those of us with unnaturally large wingspans rarely experience the pleasure of having our wrists fully protected.
Jacket is not waterproof. Zipper broke after a year and REI refused to fix it or replace it.
Bought mostly for walking dogs, perfect for that, not sure about extreme exposure but seems like it would be fine. 6'3" 240 lbs and this jacket has plenty of arm length and room for layers.
