Great looking, comfortable urban hikers!
First, I'm a 50 year old fairly active man. I log anywhere from 6-12k steps a day. I bought these boots for their looks and Danner is a reputable company,so I believed they would be a good quality product. They are! They're super comfy too. I have a medium width foot and a D width fits just right. When you buy them, buy a good conditioning oil and treat them right away. They're real leather so they require occasional attention to keep them clean and not scuffed up. If I ever wear them out I'll definitely buy another pair.
I've had quite a few
I've had quite a few Danners over the years, including a 25 year old pair of Acadias, that I still wear occasionally. I have some Mountain 600 that I like, but they are fairly bulky and my feet get hot in them when we aren't in winter temps. These Vertigo 917 are great. They have Gore-Tex, so there is some water protection, but other than that they are not lined and with the elastic around the ankle, these are very comfortable around town and for my everyday use, and they are not bulky or hot. They are probably fine for moderate day hikes as well. I would not choose them for a really rocky or long hike, or if I were carrying a heavy pack. For my intent of using them as everyday shoes here in the PNW suburbs, they are perfect.
I love the way these
I love the way these boots look, and the slimmer look than my Danner 600s have. That said, whereas the Danner 600s were incredibly comfortable from the beginning, these 917s have two issues that make them uncomfortable. One is that the edges of the elastic panel rub against the ankle. This got better over time. The other is that for some reason, the upper tongue on the right boot rubs the top of my foot painfully if I don’t get it tied just loose enough (just tight enough the laces don’t slip loose). This issue persists. I’ve been wearing them most days, and am hopeful they’ll fully wear in soon. I love Danner boots, but wouldn’t buy the 917s again.
A comfortable 3-season 'chuka' for every day wear
This is a well made shoe. I'm reticent to call it a boot. It's more like a chuka that looks like a hiking boot and shares some boot like qualities. With a vibram sole, real leather, metal D-rings for the laces, and a Gore-Tex liner, this shoe is very light weight and very comfortable. If I have any issues at all, I would like to have had a pull-on loop on the upper rear like Danner has on a few of their other boots. Since it is real leather, although pretty supple, it did take a day or two to break in, but I have now walked about 30 miles so far and it is definitely comfortable. It's a perfect three season shoe, fall, winter, spring.... highly recommend.
1 year and wow
I’ve had these boots in Michigan and Maine winters now... and they are the best boot I could buy that I can wear with dressier and snow-heavy clothing. They are light. They do allow me to be on my feet all day and never think twice about discomfort. I own the dark grey... put some snow seal on them, and - boom - good to go. The vibra...sole wears normally, but works as well as any shoe would in bad weather. Put some ice spikes on if ur trekking through bad stuff. No shoe you buy will be ice-happy. Ignore the Karens here. This shoe is well worth the investment!
I almost sent them back.
I almost sent them back. They feel a lot thinner than other Danner boots I've had before. But if you need a lightweight boot that is more like a sneaker they may be just what you need. The white rubber part of the sole is kind of soft, it kind of tore apart on the toe area when I knelt down to work on a few projects (just kneeling on carpet), so be careful if you are actually trying to use these as work boots, rather than a night on the town.
Comfy, classy, versitle
Got these boots for a 2 week trip to Spain, Scotland, and Ireland. Wore them every day for exploring cities, going out at night, and hiking wild terrain. Boots performed like a champ.
Could use a wider size option and more cushion around the ankle.
These boots look great. I bought them a little over a month ago. However, I have a semi-wide foot and I feel like I'm about to burst out with every step. Also, the top lace hooks are riveted into the boot, but there is no protection from the inside, almost rendering the boots unwearable for myself due to the pain that those rivets cause by smashing into the sides of my ankle. I kept the boots hoping that the fit would change after they were broken in, but I should've just sent them back. If I could, I would go back and return them, which is extremely disappointing because I love the look of the boots.
One month with the Danner Vertigo 917 Boots
After spending a month wearing these boots I have come to a few conclusions, not all of which are good. Aesthetics: The boots look good, like I mean really good. They are an ideal *visual* crossover between an urban setting and a gritty wilderness, all the while providing an element of that timeless Danner styling. I've actually received quite a few compliments on them. The initial brown color was very light, but luckily an application of snowseal darkened it up to an appealing shade. (It needed to be treated with waterproofing as water soaked right into the leather in its out of the box condition) Comfort: These boots have been praised for their out of the box comfort and how they feel more like sneakers than they do boots. Well, the latter part is very true. They do not feel like boots at all and actually do feel a bit like sneakers. They are astonishingly light and have a supportive sole. The out of the box comfort however... yes they are very comfortable, but its concerning to not have a break in period. I am worried that the longer I wear these boots, the worse they will fit as they actually break in and mold to the shape of my feet. That being said, the reviews are correct, these are insanely comfortable. *Quick note* Even before snowsealing, these boots they did not breathe at all. Be prepared for sweaty feet. I had worn these on a flight across the country and less than 2 hours in I already felt like my feet were swimming. Maybe it's just me though, you be the judge. Durability: I expected these boots to not have the "US made Danner quality" feel as they are imported, but geez do they feel cheap. The leather is way too thin and scratches alarmingly easy from the mildest of abrasions. I shouldn't have to feel like I need to baby my boots....they are boots, they should be tough. The tongue itself is effective at its job (?), but makes lacing up a chore as its size often requires adjusting to properly lace. The Chelsea boot style side elastic is interesting and seems to function well. The vibram sole has zero signs of wear despite being used extensively on pavement, dirt, snow, rock, ice, and salt..which is fantastic. You will be sliding around though if you use these boots in packed icy snow conditions as the tread gets clogged quickly. Verdict: I am not as happy with these boots as I wanted to be. I expected them to be more durable than they are, but then again they are not advertised as such. Still, I'd expect them to be more capable/durable for the price point that they are at. I will continue to wear these boots as I am a huge fan of how they look and feel (as of now), but I am disappointed with their build quality.
Better than expected
Perfect right out of the box. No break in period needed. Plan on picking up a second pair in the Dark Gray soon.
