Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Lateral support while running
Chim
I have owned this pair of shoes for 2 months now. I absolutely love and appreciate the comfort and “lightness” this shoe offers. One of the best shoes I have ran in. The reason I gave it 4 stars is due to the lack of lateral support when running at a slight turn. My foot slides into the side wall of the shoe almost coming over the side on ever turn during a run outside on the road or track. I will be going back to the instinct shoe due to this one issue. Still to this day, the Altra shoe company is still my absolute favorite shoe company and I love the equipment they put out!!

Sock-like upper: no support, easy to tear
YouGonnaEatThat
If you’re looking at these shoes you probably know the ultra basics: zero drop from heel toe very wide toebox so your toes can splay in a natural shape and generally very comfortable. I’ve loved my Altura trail runners, and decided to get some road shoes. This identical review is getting posted on the three pairs that I tried from REI. Escalante 1.5: super comfortable. The upper is about as strong as a sock. They tore within a month and I returned them to REI. Even before the tear, they were a problem: just walking across a sloping sidewalk in Seattle, my foot was sliding off the sole because the sock-like upper provided no lateral support. Instinct 4.5: much less padding underfoot than the Escalante or the Torin. Both the Instinct and Torin are described as “Moderate Cushion.” Nope. The instinct is minimal cushion. Torin Knit 3.5: Winner of the 3, for me. The knit has a band of non-stretch, providing some lateral support. Cushioning is good. I am a bit worried about longevity, and would have preferred to try the Torin 3.5 (not knit version), but REI doesn’t carry it.

A Different Kind of Running Shoe

I went into this shoe from a Brooks Ghost 5. Getting used to the zero drop took some time. My first few runs, I had some uncomfortable moments with my arches when running for extended periods. But after 6 weeks, my feet have gotten used to the shoe and I'm able to run in these at the same capacity as my old pair of shoes. Personally, I'm not sure if the zero drop has made a difference in my running form, pronation, or comfort. My watch tells me I've run 300 miles in these shoes so far. I like it. But as someone who was curious about this style of shoe, I think that's as far as my interest has gone -- a mild curiosity on a different kind of shoe. I might get this again if its on sale, but otherwise would take a second look at the competition.

Great shoe after having been through multiple pairs

The escalante 1.5's fix the shortcomings of the original escalante. The upper is more structured and feels more breathable, which is especially nice when running in the summer. The laces are also longer this iteration, which makes it easier to lace in an ankle lock this time around. At around 100 miles this shoe is holding up well. However, the stitching that anchors the tongue on my right shoe is pulling out and this pair may not last much longer because of that. My previous pair of 1's went around 400 miles and my first pair of 1.5's went about 350 miles before the tread wore through. There isn't a better road shoe than the escalante 1.5.

This would be great if my feet didn't shift when turning

The altra ego midsole is nice but my foot shifts around way too much in this shoe especially when turning. I would love if this had a mesh option as well. If this shoe could take on more of the torin and torin knit features like the Locked in the midfoot from the laces, and the reinforced knit of the torin, which doesn't shift around, it would be much better. If I could cut off the bottom of this shoe and the bottom of the torin and swap them keeping the torins upper and lacing feature and the escelante sole than I would have my dream shoe. The torin is just too built up for me with its cushioning and digs into my arch, whereas this one it perect.

These are the only shoes I'm going to where if I can help it

I'm so glad I came across these shoes. The guy helping Jared was explaining what they do and when I tried them on I felt everything he had just explained. It was amazing and made sense and I felt the difference right away so I said ill take them. I won't go back to any other performance shoe ever again. Even casual shoes since I found out they sell those also will now be my go to casual shoe. Im a personal trainer and I'm always tuning into my alignment and ways to improve my alignment. This shoe did it. I'm very grateful for this company and having products that are true and actually beneficial and helpful. Every shoe should be designed this way.

Great shoe but may cause tendon injury

I was happy to get these shoes on sale and found them to be comfortable and well made. I especially liked the oversized toe box, which allows your toes to spread out instead of being bunched together. However, after using them to run about 20 miles of use over the course of a couple of weeks, I began feeling pain in my left Achilles tendon and noticed that it had swelled to about twice the size of my right Achilles tendon. I believe this may have been caused by my body not adjusting well to the lack of a raised heel in these shoes (zero drop). I returned them, took a couple of weeks off, and bought a normal running shoe, and the swelling never returned.

Great update, Escalante perfected

With this update, the Escalante is no longer a "great shoe, except..." model. So many people, myself included, loved the original but also complained about the sloppy heel feel and need to avoid tight turns. The 1.5 fixes the loose heel feeling and tendency to fear an ankle injury. The structure is extremely well-balanced (not too rigid but with sufficient support throughout the upper) and the AltraEgo cushion is somehow magical. The Escalante is well-suited for a fast 5k or a long relaxed tempo run with friends. In my opinion, it's easily the best road shoe Altra has produced (I've tried most of the Neutral shoes). Well done, and thank you for this model.

Great road shoe

If you run trails in Lone Peaks, you will absolutely love these road shoes. Same feel and fit with the large toe box. It does have more cushion than the LPs, but you are running on pavement.

Awesome right out of the box

I bought these at my local REI Store and within an hour began a 16.5 mile run. No issues at all, these shoes feel amazing. To note, I've been wearing Altra zero drops for over a year now so there was so easing into the zero drop phase.
