Straps are an issue.
Just as all the other reviewers have stated, it is very difficult to get the straps to feed through the cam without bunching up and getting stuck. I have the previous version of the Sup Taxi that works really well. Tried calling Thule customer service, and spoke with someone who said they "are not aware of a problem with the straps." I did reference Kevin's review on REI stating that Thule reach out to him with an updated strap, but that didn't help. They said I can try submitting a warranty claim. I've did that a week ago and still not a peep from Thule. Considering the age of Kevin's review, I was hoping they'd be shipping these with updated straps that work, but I guess not as I received one with the flimsy strap ends. I own Thule roof racks, cargo box, snow, water and bike carriers and am very disappointed with the customer service from Thule so far. I'd really like to hear from them with a fix for this issue before the return window, but if I don't then it's going back.
Solid Product
So happy I read prior reviews and watched videos before purchasing the Thule Taxi XT. I love it! The instructions could use improvement(I thought about giving this 4 stars because of this) , but it is very sturdy and a night and day difference to what I used to use to transport my boards. Putting a towel between the boards (if you load 2 boards) is essential. One of the two racks was a bit tough to open, but I managed to open it after a few tries. Love that you can tuck in the strap.
Strap won't feed solution
I too found that after one use the strap lost rigidity and would no longer feed through the cam. To solve this problem I punched a small hole through the tip of the strap with an exacto knife being careful to run parallel to the weave and not into the stitching. Then I fed a long wire twist tie through the hole, folded it in half, and twisted it along its entire length, working from hole to end. Now I have a pull I can feed through the cam to grab and pull the strap through.
The SUP Taxi is great
I read some negative reviews about the SUP Taxi on this site while researching before I bought, and I’m very surprised that so many people struggled with using it. It’s easy to setup and secure my two SUPs. The directions were helpful but the YouTube videos from Rack Attack are what convinced me. I drove up and bought it from Tack Attack Boston. It took me about 20 minutes to install and takes me about a minute to secure my two 11-foot SUPs. I highly recommend this product. Don’t believe the negative reviews.
Great idea with poor strap design
I have used this 5 times this week and it has been a struggle to use since the first time. The ends of the straps are too flimsy which causes them to bend and bunch when you are inserting them into the lock or the storage tunnel. I am disappointed with a $300 item that is supposed to make my workout experience quicker and easier. I hope Thule designs a fix soon
Jury still out, but doing its job
Got it a month or so back and was able to haul a couple of SUPs (11.6 and 10.6) stacked. It is a bit taller than expected, but that provided a bit more clearance for the minivan tailgate. Haven’t experienced the strap through the lock problem, but I can see that the leading edge could get a bit limp from jamming it without unlocking. One thing of caution is that the part that attaches to the cross bars rotate and come slightly loose from the rotation. Had me worried a little bit, but I was able to jam a screw driver into a nut/bolt in the slot where the strap is stored and get it tightens back up as the feet was rotated.
It can be great....
I was hesitant to buy because of the negative reviews about the straps, but I decided to give it a try. With the reviews in mind, I started by loosening the straps without removing them entirely. While this requires loading from one end, it's not so hard and I was able to pretty easily get my large inflatable SUP under the loosened straps without removing them and I am confident I could easily get two boards in this way. I can do this solo, and it is super easy with two people. I can see the potential issue with pulling the straps out entirely, though I wonder if folks who are struggling to get them back in are depressing the button (where the lock is) that loosens the strap all the way. With the strap issue resolved by not pulling them all the way out, this rack rocks. Super easy to tighten and lock and the ability to adjust the width of the rack to fit different boards and different parts of the same board is great. The racks feel a lot more stable than the less expensive strap/pad systems and I'm glad I took a shot.
Second One Bites the Dust - Whistlin Dixie Style
I am a mechanical and know cars so this isnt without merrit...this is the second set of these I bought for my personal vehicle and have had the same issue. I bought a second set because Thule redesigned the closure which was a great improvement. The problem that has me returning this for the second time is the whistling the rack makes as the wind travels through it. As you can see from the photo the racks are not aerodynamic at all. This creates a very high pitched whistling noise from about 10-70 MPH. I think every dog in LA started howling as I drove around. Other than that putting a board on was easy and the whole thing felt like it was safe and secure.
Straps and locks beyond frustrating
Blindly let the sales associate convince me to get this rack because I needed something haul the board I bought. I know better, am kicking myself, and will be returning this rack. The instructions are so bad I drove over to REI for help, but even the employee struggled getting the locks installed. Have to wiggle the keys to get them in/out and turning them is just as problematic. If I could slide the paddle board in from the end so I didn't have to undo the straps I totally would, but since that's not an option be prepared to spend at least 5 minutes trying to wiggle those into the rack as well. Knowing the nylon straps will only get more flexible with use I'm not willing to waste any more time on this one. This is my first Thule rack and it's a dud. Back to Yakima for me!
