Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Cool design, needs improvement.
BACKGROUND: I am 6'2, 230lbs, 46" chest, 36" waist, thick upper body, broad shoulders, medium midsection. I am generally hot natured. Used this for climbing in 20F-30F temperatures, hiking/camping in similar temperatures, and one backcountry skiing trip where temperature was typically in the teens. I first bought a large, the hem was ridiculously tight and the midsection loose. Returned it, got an XL, hem was a little too loose, and the midsection excessively loose. Both were the Nightsea color. SHORT SUMMARY: REI makes a lot of excellent products, but it is debatable as to whether this is one of them. Jacket with a great design and a lot of potential but lacking in a couple of key areas. If you want a jacket you can throw on over a t-shirt to run errands in mildly chilly temperatures (~40F+), this might be good for you. If you want to stay warm while doing active pursuits in below freezing temps, or while being sedentary outside, I would look at other options. Would not recommend for climbers. If you like looser jackets and wearing hoodies or fleeces underneath, this offers plenty of room for layering. If you want an athletic cut jacket, this is not for you. In the end the above issues were too big of a deal for me, and I returned the jacket. Loved the look and I wish it would've worked for me. PROS: It was light, packs down nicely into Napoleon pocket and fit well at the bottom of a pack, baffle design was cool looking (subjective), hood fit well over climbing helmet, hood cinch in the middle of the back of the head was great at keeping hood close to ears and allowed it to rotate with head movement, hem cinch cords at back of both hips were easy to manipulate even with my fat fingers and climbing gloves on. The drop tail was nice was when sitting and kept back covered when reaching or with arms above. Relatively warm for trolling around town shopping or running errands. Light rain/mist beaded up nicely, unable to test in heavier downpour. Nightsea color is definitely unique, one of my favorites from any outdoor brand. CONS: I found this jacket to be of suitable warmth with just a t-shirt underneath down to about 40 degrees. Below this temperature, even in active pursuits like skiing while underneath a goretex hard shell, I found the jacket to have to major issues that contributed to loss of heat and I found myself reaching for other jackets. One was the excessively loose cuffs on the arms. They both let heat out and cold in and there was no way to cinch or tighten the cuffs. Additionally, I found the fit of the jacket to be "boxy" and excessively loose in the midsection, even though the hem was significantly tighter relative to the midsection. The loose midsection resulted in a characteristic bulge, even while standing. The generous cut meant that the jackets midsection tended to bunch up into one giant roll when sitting with the jacket zipped. I had to walk around with the hem cinched tight on both sides to keep air from getting in the hem. If they were not cinched the jacket was drafty and performed poorly compared to my other jackets with similar fill power. Arm fit was a similar story to the midsection, loose. The pockets were not as accessible as I would have liked while wearing a climbing harness; definitely not a "belay-worthy" jacket. In many places the down seemed incredibly thin. I could not find specs online for the fill weight, but if I was a betting man I would say it was <3oz of actual 850 down, a low amount, even for a jacket of such high fill power.
Thoroughly impressed
I’ve owned rei jackets in the past, all of which fit poorly. This jacket certainly breaks that cycle and is possibly the best fitting jacket i have ever owned, period. My last light weight down jacket was a patagonia nanopuff, and id take the fit of this jacket over the patagonia any day. Im 6’2” and always have a hard time finding jackets that are long enough, but not too baggy, and this one really nails it. Not only does the torso fit well, but the sleeves and hood do, too. The sleves are a perfect length and do not limit movement. The hood has a fantastic drawstring that also pulls the hood back and out of the way. A well fitting hood is also a huge plus. The only drawback of this jacket is the elastic around the wrist isnt tight enough and lets in a little too much air for my taste. That’s just me being nitpicky though, and i cant even justify removing a whole star because of it. If youre looking for a down jacket with a sophisticated fit and killer craftsmanship, this jacket is for you!
Thoroughly Disappointed
I was looking for a replacement to my old Marmot Zeus Down jacket which has unfortunately been discontinued. When the Magma Down showed up I was underwhelmed. There was hardly any down in it. Most of the shell of the jacket was so empty that I could pinch the jacket and not feel any of the insulation between my fingers. While technically this jacket contains 850 fill-power down, it contains so little of it that they really shouldn't advertise it as such. Unfortunately REI doesn't list the fill weight on it's down jackets, if they did I wouldn't have wasted my time on this jacket.
A superb jacket across the board!
I love this jacket so much that I own it in the hoodie and non-hoodie version. I did as much internet research as possible before buying this jacket, so I feel confident in this purchase. I tried several different brands before going with the REI Magma, and I'm glad I did. I'm 6' 240 lbs and the XL is an amazing fit with room for layering. It fits under my winter and rain shell comfortably. The REI Co-op Magma 850 down jacket starts with a lightweight 15D Pertex Quantum ripstop nylon shell that is superb and strong. So many jackets are only 10D. The jacket is super light weight, well constructed and comfortable to wear. Listen, you can spend an extra hundred on the typical brand, or get a superior constructed and priced REI Co-op Magma 850 down jacket. I'm hard to impress...obviously I was or I wouldn't have purchased two of these jackets. Buy these thing!
Almost Perfect
Got this on the 1/2 off sale. For the price, it cannot be beat. It’s an incredibly nice jacket. I always go to REI brand first, and they never disappoint. This jacket is nearly perfect in all ways. I wore it in Southern Utah last week when it was 9 degrees with 20MPH winds and light snow. It was cold by anybody’s standard. This jacket kept me warm, but its lack of wind proofing let the cold air through. With a wind shell, it was perfect. Without the wind-shell it is perfect, but only if the wind is calm. I have an REI Stratocloud jacket which kept me warmer due to the wind resistance, but it’s much bulkier than this jacket. I don’t know why REI chose to go without wind resistance here, maybe to keep costs down? Either way, this jacket is awesome and highly recommended at full price. At the sale, you’d be crazy to not get it.
Warm, light, and packable
Fit: I'm 6', 215 and wear either a large or extra large depending on cut and brand. I tried both on in-store, and the XL was a better bet, especially for a jacket under which I may wear layers. Pros: Over the past month, I've worn this as the weather has dipped down into the 20s with occasional high wind and rain. It's kept me warm and dry and blocked the wind. It's light and doesn't feel bulky, and packs into it's own pocket (snugly) when it isn't needed. Cons: The wrist cuffs are pretty wide, with no way to tighten them. Some tighter elastic, or internal cuffs would have been appreciated. The zippers could be sturdier. The material is somewhere between shiny and matte, but still a little shinier than I would ordinarily prefer, and the color (nightsea) considerably darker in person than in the photos.
Exactly as described
I bought this jacket online, which I’m always a little apprehensive doing since I usually wear a fitted, size small. I’m 5’6” and 125# so it’s hard finding nice fitting jackets as they tend to run a little baggy for me. This jacket fits great! It is a little long on the arms and torso, but I actually prefer it so if I’m active it gives me room to move around without the sleeves or back riding up. It is very warm, even more so than I expected because of the light weight. I look forward to wearing this all winter here in Colorado.
A very good down hoodie
I really like this jacket. The small down tubs mean that feathers stay distributed. The zip breast pocket is handy for my phone or sunglasses, and it's feather light (sorry). My wife thinks the color is great. I have two little grips: The jacket is long enough that it goes over my hips, (I'm 5'6") and it's snug at the bottom zipping up requires paying attention, and I have found that I need to pull it up to my waist when I sit in the car otherwise I think I might rip out the zipper. Another inch of girth at the bottom or perhaps better yet a shorter length would make the fit better. The second grip is the zipper is somewhat small - a larger pitch would seem appropriate for a jacket like this.
This is the best Jacket I’ve ever owned, $100 !?!
I live in NYC and was in the market for a down jacket as winter is creeping in. I really didn’t want to spend a ton, but didn’t want to get something low quality. I went to North Face in SoHo and felt everything was a bit too expensive for the product itself. So, I decided to take a look at the REI to see if maybe they had an off brand or something that was still good quality just a bit cheaper. ( Was thinking maybe Columba) I walk downstairs do a little looking in the Men’s section and BOOM. I see a big 50% off sign. Exactly what I was looking for lol. And, then boom I see a black down jacket. Also, exactly what I was looking for. I tried on this jacket and couldn’t believe the fit and finish for the price. Granted it was half off, but it is a hoodie with 850 and was 100 dollars. What a deal!! also a i agree with the other reviewers. This Jacket has the best fit i’ve even found. It is narrow in the body and arms. And isn’t boxy, giving you that marshmallow man look, yet is EXTREMELY WARM and VERY well made. I am ecstatic I found this for $100 dollars. It might be the best purchase i’ve ever made. And, it was the last one in Black in size XL. If you’re looking for a really nice down jacket, and don’t care about the logo or name brand. You’ve found it. I personally think REI is a cooler logo than many other companies honestly. Before this I had a Black Patagonia Down Hoodie which got lost in a move, and I would say 100 times over that this jacket has a much better fit / much better fill than the Patagonia Down Hoodie for more than half the cost.
great warmth needs hoodie tightening and size
It has kept me warm so far and has been really great. Only two complaints are- there is no way to tighten the hoodie as there is no tightening strap like the one on the waist. Due to this the head get so much wind draft and in come weather. Wish I could tighten the hoodie. Secondly, the sizing is a bit off. I love a snug fit but the Medium that I ended up keeping is bit big and the small was too tight. I am an avg make 5’11” and 170lbs and Medium clothes always usually fit me well. Lastly, wish it came with a bag that I could store in as this is really light weight. Overall the 850down keeps me warm and is lightweight.
