I got this jacket October 2019, as a replacement to an old north face rain jacket, and to use on a daily basis in rotation with another rain jacket from Mountain Hard Wear. I spend a lot of time outdoors, and was looking for something light, breathable, robust and most importantly water proof. First couple of outings with this jacket were in the East Coast in the Adirondacks. Had somewhat heavy rain, and wind. The jacket seemed to do ok with those conditions. From January till March the jacket didn't get much use. Recently I relocated to Central America where heavy rain is commonplace and I have been using the jacket pretty heavily. A few days ago I noticed that I was getting wet while outdoor during heavy rain. I started using the jacket more often to test it and I kept noticing that I was getting wet on the back of my neck. I inspected it carefully and noticed the water proof lining on the hoodie was coming apart. It's a shame but his jacket doesn't seem to be up to standards, and I would not recommend it for people that are very outdoorsy. Just yesterday while walking on a trail the jacket suffered a small tear from a tree branch, nothing major but I didn't think the material would be so fragile. Hope the review helps
I purchased this item (in Black Medium) online a few days ago and received it yesterday. First impression was pretty good as it was only two day shipping, and the material was stretchy & appeared to be of high quality. I read numerous reviews online that it was a slim fit (which I like) so I was happy with the sizing. When I opened up the front right pocket, there was a receipt inside which appeared to be from the previous purchaser, so obviously this was a used/returned jacket and no one had checked the item. I wasn't too concerned with it as I liked the look and fit, until today when it rained and I decided to take it out for a test. Within 5 minutes, the jacket stopped repelling water and began to absorb it. It also shriveled and has a bumpy texture at those areas it absorbed water. It's been drying for about an hour and is still damp with the bumps. Extremely disappointed with my first purchase with REI as this received pretty good reviews on their website... Only option I was given was to return. So I'll be doing that and buying a different jacket somewhere else.
The water proof lining is falling a part after only a few months. It hasn't even been washed yet... had better expectations.
Great jacket, however I'm 5'11" and 180 lbs, usually wear a Medium, but the fit in the armpits was too tight for me. Definitely a slim fit jacket, which is the last bullet point in the description that I missed, so wanted to highlight here. I wear slim fit oxford shirts and pants no problem, but this jacket was too tight. Especially if I have a sweater on underneath. I got the blue/orange/navy option and LOVE the look and materials, it feels great. Wish the fit was a bit bigger for me, would probably work for people with a runners frame. Unfortunately the sleeves are perfect length so a Large would likely not work for me. Almost!
I used this jacket in exactly one situation: commuting on rainy days. This jacket got a small tear in the sleeve before I even wore it 10 times. For the first time ever I am hugely dissapointed by TNF.
Reactions were as follows: 1- DOPE DESIGN. What a beautiful color scheme and shape. 2- SOOOOO COMFY. Throwing it on is almost the best part. It soothes the skin. 3- WATER/WINDPROOF. I stay super dry. Oh btw, everyone compliments the design and everyone agrees on its comfort when they throw it on. I want to wear it all the time but the dry So-Cal weather doesn't allow me to unfortunately. Needless to say, I love it when it rains nowadays. Bottom line: exactly what I need for my upcoming John Muir Trail hike. I'll be shopping some more with The North Face as I gear up for my 230 mile trek. Best brand.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great product, I've used it on a stormy night outside and i had zero leaks, i go fishing with it i wear it all day on the river its worth the price and its very comfortable. Runs true to size and its stretchy when on the move. Love the jacket like all other TNF products
This is my second review. The large ended up being too small and was tight under my arms. I exchanged for the X-large size and it fits good, but I kind of wish the large size worked for me. I'm trying the adjust the waist in to make it fit better. I bought the jacket in order to layer underneath it. I'm 6'2" and 185 lbs., so I was surprised that the large was a little tight. I wore it this weekend in Chicago and it was pushing 37 degrees and windy. I'm happy to report that it was very warm and kept the wind out. I wore a puffy vest and long sleeve shirt underneath. We didn't have rain, but I'm confident that it is rainproof. I plan to use it on a camping trip soon, so I can post again about how it did you b a colder fall camping trip.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I decided at the last minute to bring this jacket with me for eight weeks while working from the Caribbean coast in Mexico during "hurricane" season. You know, just in case. But, it's 2020. And "hurricane" season quickly became a tropical storm (Gamma) followed by a category 4 hurricane (Delta) followed by a category 1 hurricane (Zeta) followed by heavy rains from another hurricane (Eta). I can't make this up. This jacket far out-performed and exceeded any expectation. It has been perfect to toss in a light bag when a downpour can start any second and breathable enough to walk around at 80° and 90% humidity. Also, it doesn't look or feel like you're wearing a trash bag like most other waterproof jackets. I rarely write reviews, but this jacket warranted the effort.
This is a very odd rain coat. It's fully capable of handling the worst downpours but it's not warm or insulated. This is the obvious part. You would need something under it as a mid layer to stay warm and that's where this becomes odd. The material stretches which is a great touch but it outlines the mid layer's every crease or bend. Which is strange since I never seen that before, it's almost as if this coat is acting with the part of the mid layer. Just on top. Typically, coats don't bend of fold in such a way like one does, but that's not a bad thing, just different. This coat does it's job well and the inner lining is a bit cool to the skin...meaning, it's slightly chilly. I doubt I'd wear a t-shirt with this coat since exposed skin would be on the chilly side.
