Not sure why I hadn't given this type of lock a go prior to now. I love everything about it so far. The lock mechanism seems preferable over other types in that it feels and looks sturdier, and my assumption is that it would be less prone to common types of breakage. Additionally, it's the least finicky to store while not in use, and easily apply when in use.
I ordered this chain lock as a security upgrade to my standard cable lock to go with my brand new mountain bike. Cable locks are ridiculously easy to cut with basic hand snips, and are not secure, so….. I did a TON of research, and settled on this Kryptonite Keeper 785 medium security chain lock as it is MUCH stronger than a cable lock, but still light and small enough to carry in a saddle bag or backpack. Good price point too, and Kryptonite is supposedly one of the best names in bike locks. This lock generally gets good reviews, but I read dozens and dozens of negative reviews about the lock mechanism failing and not working. I bought the lock anyway figuring those simpletons did not read the directions properly and didn’t insert the key all the way in or were doing something wrong. Well, I got this lock today and decided to test the lock mechanism to see if the complaints had any merit. It came with 2 keys and I tried them out. I opened and closed the lock perfectly over and over many times using both keys. It worked great for about 30 cycles…. and then, the key got stuck. I could close the lock and remove the key, but I could not open the lock and remove the key. I fiddled and played with it for about an hour using both keys and finally gave up. This lock is going back. What a joke. There is NO WAY Kryptonite should have produced a lock mechanism this finicky and prone to failure. …and it’s not just their Keeper locks with the problem. Reading other reviews, their Kryptolock and Evolution chain locks are even worse! I’m super bummed, as I wanted to like this lock, but my search continues.
I like this lock–it is sturdy, heavy but not overwhelming, well-covered, and satisfying to turn the key to lock or unlock. To remove the key from the lock, you have to shut the lock again so the sliding mechanism isn't just free and loose.
