I picked up a pair of these Salomon Outline Low Hiking Shoes after the shoes I had originally planned on picking up (Salomon Men's X Ultra Prime) turned out to rub against a tender spot on my ankle. My daily summer hikes are in a hot, dusty, California region and I opted to get the non Gore-tex version of the shoe to. So far, I am delighted. The shoes were comfortable from the first moment I put them on, they provide me with more support than I was expecting, and my feet don't roast in the 100+ weather. I have also been very pleased with their grip. I've hit an age where keeping active is important and I try to walk steeper fire trails. The trails are usually dusty and with a lot of loose dirt. These shoes have kept my feet firmly attached to the trails and with the barest minimum of slippage. I have owned plenty of walking shoes, hiking boots, and sneakers, and not one of them has had the holding power of these Salomons. I am very happy with the purchase and will recommend them to friends.
After reading all of the hit or miss reviews I decided to go for it anyway, and I'm glad I did. The fit is stiff, but not at all uncomfortable imo - which is what I was worried about. The traction is fantastic and while they may not be waterproof, I spent plenty of time ankle deep in river crossings on a 10 mile hike and was totally unbothered. Good deal. Very happy.
My favorite things about this shoe are that they are lightweight and very breathable but I also really like the fit and traction as well. Some shoe’s lugs are either too small or too big but I think the OUTline (in addition to most Salomon shoes/boots) has the perfect balance. They are great for packed trails but also do well on the rocks if you want to scramble. These shoes double as a great everyday shoe and I’ve even wore them to work. They look great with a pair of khakis or levis. There was no break-in period required with this shoes as they were comfortable right out of the box. I’ve yet to use them as a trail runner but I think they’d do fine. This is a great all around hiker and I highly recommend it.
I normally hike with fairly minimalist trail runners and was looking for a comparably light shoe designed for hiking rather than running. First off on sizing, if you have tried the GTX version on in-store, these non-waterproof versions do fit a bit looser. I normally wear a size 10 in most street shoe brands, but these in size 9.5 are still a bit more roomy than I prefer, even with my thickest socks (but I think I'd hit my toe on a 9). On my first day hike with them I found them to be a bit clunky and overly supportive and almost returned them, but I decided to give them a try backpacking. With a pack on is where they really shined for me. The break-in also helped them to give a little better ground feel. They still feel fast and light but give good support around the heel of the foot and I find myself less likely to roll my ankle than my trail runners. My big complaint is with the soles - they have good grip but the lugs are spaced too far apart. Maybe this is to save weight, but I find that on the rocky terrain I hike on, I can feel the individual lugs right through the sole, and it's really rather uncomfortable. I can even see on my shoes with only light wear how the sole is caving inwards around each lug on the forefoot. A different sole with tighter lug spacing would really take this shoe to the next level. Overall, they'll be good for some people (I'd say more on dirt surfaces), but for me I'll keep looking - though unfortunately mine have too much wear to be returned at this point.
Comfortable and lightweight, but the tongues keep slipping sideways
These shoes are some of the most comfortable, right-out-of-the-box shoes I have ever owned. I would buy them again but for the fact that the soles wear out extremely fast, especially in the forefoot, so I can now feel every stone. I bought these in February, have not really used them all that much, but now they are worn out.
These are absolutely amazing. My first time out in these I actually went trail running. 6 miles on my first go in them. They were comfortable and didn't cause any friction whatsoever. This is a great shoe for anyone who wants a lightweight hiker that could also double as a trail runner. I am a size 11 and it fit perfectly.
Got these a few weeks ago. I tend to do quite a bit of trail running and hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. While I wish I had got these in goretex or waterproof, the Outlines definitely have surpassed my expectations. A couple things I especially liked were the tongue and the lugs. For me, I have had trouble with hiking shoes having a pretty uncomfortable tongue. Whether they get in the way or press up against your foot in a weird way. Regardless, Salomon did just justice by giving the tongue a design that fits your foot and supports it instead of creating awkward pressure points. The lugs, well, Salomon has always done well by in my book. Hiking in the White Mountains of NH tends to be very rocky, wet, and rugged. These lugs create the perfect balance between trail and rock. I love that they are fairly aggressive kind of like the Speedcross'. I use these for everything from day hikes to mix trail runs to everyday outside (with how comfortable they are). I'd recommend them because of how versatile they are. You don't have to be super into any one thing, but these will adapt to almost any use.
I would not recommend these shoes to anyone. They are so unfomfortable. Within the first day, I started having foot pain. The shoes are so stiff compared to their other shoes. Day two, I started have pain in my big toe joints. Went to my doctor to see if I had gout. Tried a new pair of insoles, didn't change the pain. 3 days later, I bought a pair of sense ride2. I then started weaing each pair for half a day. Finally gave up the Outlines. I know they are two different types of shoes, but I have never gone wrong with Salomon until I purchased the outline's. Stay away.
Hi there and thanks for your feedback, The OUTline does feature a stiffer sole compared to our other trail shoes and this can be beneficial depending on the terrain you are using them for and the protection they offer. We would always advise you try the shoe's on thoroughly beforehand to ensure the fit and comfort is suitable.
After backpacking in Big Bend National Park for four days with a 35 pound pack, I must say that the Salomon Outline is a phenomenal backpacking shoe. Usually my feet get extra sweaty, but the abundant mesh helped keep them ventilated and fairly dry. I added a MasterFit footbed because all shoes come with flimsy insoles, but that is to be expected. The outsole on this shoe exceeded all of my expectations. There were a few sketchy climbs and descents on slick surfaces that the Outline was able to tackle effortlessly. The braking lugs on the heel of the shoe actually do their job and offer plenty of stability and confidence when walking on loose downhills. The only think I'd like to see changed in this shoe is the lacing. I love Salomon's quicklace system and I think the Outline could really benefit from it as a fast and light hiking shoe.
