Bikepacking Rig with some mods
I felt I needed to make the bike more comfortable and easier to pedal up steep hills of California. I did all the work by myself and added a shockstop suspension stem, salsa woodchipper handlebars, tubeless tires, wtb seat, cane creek stump buster seat post, and changed to a 1x9 (38t wolftooth front and 11x42 cassette, derailed, and levers by microshift.
awesome!
I’ve been loving this bike. I have ridden bikes for the last 3 years, but I’ve used an Ebike for the last little while. I was tired of being tied to a heavy battery, but I was worried that I would miss the speed going back to a regular bike. This Salsa leaves nothing to be desired. It is fast, smooth, nimble, and looks bulletproof. I took to on a 25+ mike ride the first night and fell in love. An unrelated river accident left me with a torn ACL, so I’ve been out of commission after surgery for the last week or so. But once I’m healthy again, I will be riding my salsa. My wife and I are planning a bike-packing trip for once I’m at 100%. This bike will be perfect for it.
Best Quality to Price Ratio
I've raced mountain bikes for a while and had to move to a city to start grad school. I wanted a bike I could ride on the road but take onto singletrack when I got time... also, it had to fit the budget of a student. This bike matched that need perfectly. It rides like any high-end bike -- never feels like Salsa sacrificed quality for the price point. It's fast on road and dirt, and can take a beating. I'm 5'8 and the 52cm fits really well. Hats off to Salsa.
Great Bike!
Just picked up this bike and so far I really like it! The frame is stiff, I love it when it all of the power from a pedal stroke seems to go into propelling you forward. The bike is steady, yet seems nimble, and absorbs rough roads well. I have not taken it off road yet. The bike is a little heavy and the gears have some rather large jumps, however, I knew all of that, and at this price point, I still think this bike is awesome. The bike seems to roll along really well on paved roads, which kind of surprised me with such fat tires. I use to be an avid biker, road and mountain and later I had a hybrid bike. I was looking into getting back into biking and was looking at hybrids, I did not know about gravel bikes. However, I test road several hybrids at REI and did not like any of them really, I wanted a more aggressive riding position but having better gearing than road bikes, i.e. granny gears, for going up hill. I started doing research and discovered gravel bikes, which I could have used fifteen years ago! Anyway, long story short, this bike seems to be perfect for what I want. Casual rides around town, nice long rides in the mountains with plenty of forest roads thrown in for adventure, maybe some tame single track if I can find it. If you are thinking of getting a hybrid, I highly suggest you give gravel bikes a look. If you are thinking of getting a road bike, but don't plan on racing, I suggest you give gravel bikes a look! Salsa has a Journeyman version with 700cc tires, I plan on getting a second 700cc wheel set for exclusive road rides. Than I will probably sell my other bikes.
Best Bike Purchase Experience EVER
Very impressed with the whole process. My bike came already tuned and ready to go, all I had to do was put on the front wheel and handlebars. The best part is REI gives you an easy to read how-to-Install manual with the owners manual. It only took me 15 minutes to have the bike ready to ride. I have put a couple hundred miles on it and it still rides smooth. I will be getting all of my bikes at REI from now on.
awesome
Great off road , distance , comfort , very fun commuter and adventure bike love it !!
Great entry level build
More entry level bikes should include this parts spec. Its a great bike for my wife, who's not the bike snob, or full blown enthusiast I am. The beefy tires are probably overkill for anything she'll ride, but they still add to comfort on everything we do ride as a family.
