Best first aid kit I've used
As a former EMT/firefighter being prepared for emergencies in the backcountry is high on my priority list. I've used this first aid kit for the past few months on various hikes and a couple of backpacking trips - I really like it. It's perfect for when you're heading out with a large group or for a multinight backcountry trip. Honestly, my favorite feature that I have never seen before on similar products is a detachable day trip first aid kit(pictured). Often when I go backpacking I'll set up a basecamp to launch a few day hikes out of. Having the smaller day hike pack pre-organized and detachable allowed me to grab it and go without having to bring the whole pack. Thankfully, I've only needed it for some minor cuts so far but the kit has everything I need and is clearly labeled for quick access. Honestly, I can't think of a way to improve this product which is great for something as important as emergency first aid gear. I highly recommend this product if you're heading out on a trip with a group. Safe trails!
Love this first aid kit!!
I am a nurse and have been looking for a nice first aid kit for a while! I have been collecting what I liked about other kits and kind of combing all of them until now! Love the pockets and organization that comes automatic in the bag, and honestly it has all the basic stuff you would need And then some. I haven’t found one that I liked until I got this one, and I am super excited it has quite a bit of stuff for the size. Then has a small removable wallet sized, day hike first aid kit that is nice for those who want to go lighter. The first aid book even has some great information. I’m excited to have this with me hiking!
I actually used it
One month after I bought this I actually had to use it and it contained the thing I needed. It also includes a small, removable pouch of first-aid supplies to take day hiking. The interior of the kit is clearly labeled to say what goes where. It lacks a few things I like to have along such as an emergency dental kit for broken fillings. I'll probably also add a few extra ibuprofens. In any case, the container is nicely designed with an inventory printed on the back and I expect I'll keep on replacing the supplies I use up and keep on using this kit for a long time.
Nicely organized
This first aid kit is pretty complete. It could be just a bit better if it contained KT tape and coban. which I will add. It is very well organized with the different pockets labeled with what belongs in it and would be handy during a medical emergency. It also has a day hike pouch which I like a lot. I would not take it on a lengthy backpacking trip mainly because I like to keep my backpack less than 25lbs. It will be perfect for my motor home
Good Starter Kit
Kit is well organized and has a nice separate day travel pouch inside attached by Velcro. Its a good starter kit, however I feel like its marketing is off. It claims to be enough for 6 people and last 8 days, but if you look inside, they provide you with one pair of gloves... you will need to add your own to treat 6 people without cross contamination. You will also need to bring your own pills in the included pill capsule as they don't provide enough of any of the pills for even one person for 8 days. Some items I would like to see included are a tourniquet, Mylar blanket, more gloves for at least 6 people, and enough medication for at least 1 person for 8 days as claimed.
HART First Aid kit - Impressive!
I picked up this kit as I am preparing for a 9 day, 6 person trek on the Wonderland Trail this August and I wanted something that would fulfill every need. This kit should be more than sufficient with the quality and quantity of items in it. I chose to do my research at REI, as a member I know they have quality products they stand behind. I also wanted to do a 'touchy feely" comparison. This kit is an upgrade from the former kit sold under the REI name. As someone certified in Wilderness First Aid, a good kit is important part of your ten essentials. I especially liked the day pack wallet (included in this kit) with enough essentials if I want to go for an easy bike ride, walk etc. This First Aid kit will be perfect for any hike, and especially a multi day trek. I took it on an overnight recently and reviewed all the products inside with my friend who is a National Guard Reservist; we agreed it was the best! HART left plenty of room if I needed to add any items of my own, including an epi pen . The weight of this pack is minimal and did not hinder any space for my 30lb pack. Impressive HART, very impressive.
Good value but beware limitations
The Bad: It has some pretty chintzy trauma sheers, would recommend getting a full size pair. The So So: The way these kits do creams and pills always annoys me. The common needs like NSAID, Aspirin etc... should have a larger quantity small bottle. You have 6 Advil in here which is 12 hours of treatment for 1 person. The kit claims to support 6 folks over 8 days. Same with anti diaharea, anti-biotic ointments etc... For immediate treatment options this kit is ok, but if you are days from help this kit is not going to do a good job supporting much beyond any given initial event within its scope. Wouldn’t mention it except the kit advertises itself as being good enough to support extended trips, which it really is not, especially back country trips. If that is what you need it for I would consider this a starter kit that you should augment. More gloves, probably another wrap or two and bump up the medications. At least a small bottle of Ibuprophen/Acetomenophen/Naproxen etc... and a small tube of antibiotic ointment, maybe a handful of alcohol wipes, and some more larger bandages to account for the possibility of needing to do wound cleaning/bandage changes over the course of a few days. The Good: The bag is nicely organized and labeled. It has a handy ‘day trip’ sub unit you can pull out that will easily go in a purse or even a jacket pocket if need be. It Includes a book with decent first aide break downs. Good selection of smaller bandages, bandaides etc...
Good starter kit
First things first, love love love how organized this little guy is. Definitely a place for everything, and everything in its place. Color makes it easy to pick out quickly. Attach a small d ring to the top and you're in business. That being said, I needed to add a couple things to this to bring it up to snuff. For reference, I am a former Army Medic, current Firefighter/Paramedic, and a Wilderness EMS Instructor, so please understand my biases. Put a good, commercial tourniquet in this thing. And a couple chest seals. There's room enough for both, and you can still comfortably zip it up. When you need it, there is no substitute for either. I know you can improvise both, but not to any degree that'll work as well as the real thing. Pro tip: The medications have expirations, and most first aid kits stay in a closet or on a wall their entire lives. Take the dates of the medications and put that into your phone calendar. Set yourself a reminder to replace expired meds, so when the time comes you'll know whatever you're taking is safe to take. Also, review the field guide that comes with this thing. There's some gee whiz information in there that's always great for review. Finally, if you're gonna solo, or take a trip with anyone that has less experience than you, take a wilderness first aid course. These pay dividends when you need them, Heaven forbid. Thanks for reading, stay safe out there backpackers!
Why is REI selling old merchandise
I purchased this product from REI in mid-March, 2022. The purpose was to include the First-Aid Kit in my emergency preparedness supplies. When I got home, I discovered that the kit had an expiration date of July 2022. or only four months after purchase. Surely you can do better, REI!
Great first aid kit
I thought that this first aid kit was pretty awesome!!! It wasn't too light, but I've learned from past experiences to always be as prepared as possible, and this kit had pretty much everything I'll ever need - even a handbook to jog my memory of wilderness first aid tips.
