Great Classic backpack for hikers and communters.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my first North Face brand Backpack that I owned. I have my own Under Armour for 4 years already and I decided to order The North Face Recon for both back to work and hiking, and this backpack looks great fit to my needs. I like front mesh pocket allowing you to clip small stuffs and the daisy chain also allowing you to clip things and adding a bungee cords to carry other stuffs. The size is not too big, and not too small. However, I wish The North Face offer 20 or 22 Liter backpack between 16-18 inches height in the near future.
Great technical backpack for hiking and work.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great versatile backpack for hiking, work, and school. The daisy chain offer you an option to add a bungee cord system while you are use for hiking. You can add or remove the bungee cord system anytime in this backpack. I bought another North Face Borealis for my dad also, although both are same price, similar design, I like the Recon design more than the Borealis.
Very comfortable and visually appealing
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love my recon ! I use it for work and the gym and it fits my barbell pad, sweater/sweats! &Other gym accessories! For work I use an iPad and it's always protected and doesn't bottom out with the special area it has. Definitely get if you like Multiple pockets! Very comfortable!
I would buy this again...
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use this backpack to travel and I can put all my stuff (sneakers, clothes, gadgets including my 15 inch laptop) Definitely recommend to family and friends.
I would definitely buy again or for gift.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Just received this pack as a birthday gift and I'm very satisfied so far. I can easily tell it's made of quality materials and have just enough pouches and places to hold my things. I'm utilizing it dual-approach as I carry this into my office daily with laptop and materials. I also plan on utilizing this on a trip to Colorado next week and will use as a day pack into Estes Park/National Park. I really like that it's not too large (I'm 5'10" and 180) and it fits perfect. Again, always super excited and satisfied with NF products and looking forward to my new and first time backpack.
BEWARE product design flaws
I purchased this from MEC Canada (2019), previous Recon version. The features are good, but there are 2 critical design flaws: A) straps are lousy, mostly worn and torn after couple years because of this thin breathable fabric, which doesnt help much. B) the seam where the fabric meets the cushion back panel, all the pack weight is focused on that strip of fabric providing rigidity. But because all the load stress is concentrated there, every time place the pack down on rough surfaces or have any weight, it continuous wears this tighten fabric. My previous pack (also North Face, 2006) lasted way longer and aged better than this. I echo other comments: quality of NF packs have declined. Considering the cost, this recon pack should 1/3 of the price.
Love the backpack but bad quality!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this backpack but unfortunaelty it is already starting to break down and I have only been using it for 4 weeks. I purchased the backpack in July and started using it at the end of July when I started school. It fits everything and the pockets are great. However, today I noticed that the stitching on the straps was completly undone on one side. I carry the packback to and from the car to school but besides that, it sits in one place all day. There is absolutely no reason the stitching should be completely undone after 4 weeks of use. I looked at the other strap and the stitching on that side is starting to come apart but not nearly as bad as the other side. I am very disappointed because I have used North Face backpacks for years and never had this problem. Not sure if mine is a dud or not but the quality is not where it used to be. I want to send it for repair or warranty but the process is so inconvenient. It would involve mailing the backpack back for them to repair which the website says could take 4-6 weeks. So I would not have a backpack to use to for school for that time.
Timber Tan color way does NOT look like picture
Bottom and water bottle pockets do not match the tan/yellow of the nylon and is an ugly brown color. Material very thin and zippers for smaller pockets are get caught in material.
Good
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I first bought a recon backpack in 2011 for college. It has (and still does) served me well and I love it. I've used it for everything - school, work, gym, hiking, weekend trips, etc. My favorite thing about the old one has been the front mesh pocket and the small front zippered compartment because it's easy to stash / access things like my phone or keys throughout the day. I wanted a new recon because while my older one is still holding up well, the padding has thinned out and there are some spots where it's wearing out. Here are my thoughts so far when comparing the two recons: 1 - More compartments = smaller feeling? The new one definitely feels a bit smaller and I think it's because it's more compartmentalized. The old one had a larger main compartment with a small laptop sleeve while the new one has a separate main compartment and laptop compartment. While it's nice to have the separate laptop compartment, it seems to take up space that could otherwise be used for packing things. Still, it's nice to have, and I can use that section for other things (like my planner or clothes, even) if I'm not bringing my laptop that day. 2 - Front mesh and front little zippered pouch: the old recon's mesh seems sturdier and wider than the new one's mesh. It can hold my running shoes pretty easily whereas the new one is a bit smaller and softer, but stretchier. I can get my shoes in there but I have to work a bit harder to stuff them in there. The old recon mesh has a clip at the top whereas the new one has an elastic band to further support. Both are fine to me and generally keep things in place The front mesh and the little zippered compartment are still my favorite thing about both recons. 3 - Water bottle holders: the new pouches are much nicer than the older ones. They can fit my 30oz nalgene. Because the sleeves come up higher, my water bottle doesn't fall out as easily as on the old one, which was pretty annoying. 4 - Additional pouches compartment: this compartment on the old recon extended down beyond the little pouches at the top, but on the new one, the compartment stops right under the pouches. This is fine for me because I rarely used this section on the old one, but it might be a little bit of a bummer for people who do. 5 - Tightening straps: On the old recon, I used the straps on the side to tighten my backpack when it was stuffed to the brim. This helped squish everything so I could fit it in places like under the airplane seat or just make it a bit less top heavy. The new one has these, and I still like them on the new one, but I don't use them as often because the new recon doesn't seem to protrude as much when stuffed. Overall, I like it. I do wish it was a little less compartmentalized and FELT bigger, but I do like it. This one is definitely great for work/school/day tripping, but I will probably opt to use my old one instead for hiking and weekend trips.
Lasted 2 weeks and not replaced
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After about 1 week I noticed a small fraying where the strap attaches to the main body of the backpack. After 2 weeks the strap had frayed so dramatically it was barely attached. I was told normal wear is not covered under warranty. The backpack held only a laptop and two folders so to hear that was "normal wear and tear" after two weeks was VERY disappointing. I replaced (purchased) the women's recon and after a month of use have noticed part of the strap, in a different area, has new stitching coming apart.
