Carries e-bikes, is easy to use, needs few changes
I purchased this because of its weigh-carrying capacity. It is unsurpassed in its support of the bikes and the ease in getting them on and off the carrier. I have not yet used the ramp but I suspect that will make it a little easier; for now, lifting the bikes on or off is ok. We have two e-bikes and the spacing (one of the bikes batteries makes it sometimes a challenge but, again, it works well). My two complaints are that the latch to allow the hitch "bar" to fold after removing from the car is underneath the rack and a little bit hard to reach. Second, instead of reflectors, this is "beefy" enough that it should have lights that plug directly into the standard hitch electrical receptical for brake lights and turn signals. I purchased a set of those and will somehow affix them to this reflectors or instead of the reflectors. A minor concern is that there should be reflective strips when the rack is all folder to alert others driving nearby; I purchased a strip of reflective warning tape and did it myself. Otherwise VERY happy.
Great Bike Rack!!
I’m so very happy with this bike rack. Thule seems to have thought of everything. I have two electric bikes and an electric dirtbike. It will carry the one electric dirt bike or both e-bikes. I am in my late 50s and I am able to load everything by myself. The wheels on the bottom enable easy movement, storage and installation. At the hitch, the expander and locking mechanism ensure a solid install and provides theft deterrent. Locks on the rack arms adjusters also ensure that they will not loosen in transport and provide theft deterrent as well. The step release is solid and easy to use in order to access my rear hatch. I’m not strong but can lift the bikes back into place.
Easy on, easy off
I like this rack because it’s super easy to detach from my hitch receiver and put in the trunk when I go to a car wash. I can literally remove it in less than 30 seconds. Putting it back on takes about a minute. I carry a 57 lb ebike and a 32 lb BikeE recumbent. (See picture) The included ramp is flimsy and I no longer use it. I’ve found that by lifting the front wheel on the bike and putting it on the rack I can roll the rear wheel up too. I’ve never had any problems with the security arms. Rotten luck for the other reviewer whose attaching clamp broke in half on first use. I’ve driven over two thousand miles with bikes on this rack and have never had any problems like that.
Expensive, but Works Great with eBikes
I bought this to transport my wife’s new eBike which is heavy and oddly shaped for conventional racks. After a bit of experimentation with the positioning of the clamp arms, I came up with a combo that secures both our bikes with relative ease.
Hitch rack for gravel bikes w full fenders
First the good news: the Thule EasyFold XT 2-bike hitch rack will handle two bikes with full fenders. It is the only platform rack I have found that will do that. The bad news is that you may have to remove one of your bottle cages to use the rack. We bought the rack to haul our 58 and 59.5 cm gravel bikes: my wife's Sonder Camino and my Salsa Vaya. Each has full fenders that limit the way the rack arms (removeable, lockable, aluminum bars that rigidly link the bike to the vertical "loop" portion of the rack) can be attached, because the turning knob/ attachment mechanism at the end of the arm needs space in order to work. It takes a bit of experimenting to see how to arrange the bikes and the arms and their pincher/knob ends so that both bikes can be securely held at a point along one of the frame tubes. As you can see in the photos, we settled on my Vaya being on the inside, with the shortest arm attached to my down tube. The Camino is held using the longest arm attached to the seat tube. We had to detach the long arm from the rack--it's designed for that--and then reattached it in the appropriate position to hold the Camino AFTER the Vaya was on the rack. The arms are a fixed length, and that length is one of the factors determining where the arm can be attached to each bike. The flexibility in the system is in the fact the arms can be moved to different places on the loop (they are locked in place when the end "knob" is tightened and locked), the arms can rotate in one dimension on the tube the loop is made of, and the knob end rotates 360 degrees. The yellow tape on the rack loop we added to mark where we want the arms.
Thule Easyfold XT with Jeep Wrangler JL
I highly recommend this bike rack if you have a trunk mounted full size all-terrain spare tire. Time will tell if this bike rack is really worth the asking price, in terms of its durability. Thule has a limited lifetime warranty but the terms are a little vague. Pros: - Future proof, capable of carrying heavy mountain bikes including E-bikes provided you remove the battery before loading. - Lightweight and compact, easy to use and store in trunk, closet, or garage. - No wobble and everything lock with one key to prevent theft. - Fits with a trunk mounted full size all terrain spare tire with full functionality and no hitch extension needed on Jeep Wrangler JL (see photos) - When opened, rear view back up camera is still useful. - Rather than being on a flat plane, the bike rack attaches to your hitch in an elevated position to prevent impact to road when going up or down hills. In other words, the attachment has a Z-shape (see photos). Cons: - Bike ramp that comes with the rack is a little short and not secured in the bike rack, therefore you need to keep it secure in your car. A longer ramp is available for purchase. - Straps are a little short, but longer options are available for purchase. - Jeep Wrangler JL swing tailgate does not open with the bike rack mounted. However, if you fold your back seats down the trunk is still very accessible.
Fits my stock 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sport Perfectly
Positive: Lightweight, Compact and Portable - Holds my Giant Roam-E bikes with rubbing / touching or having to move seats and or handlebars. Very happy that I did not need a hitch extension for my Jeep which would add more steps and more play / wobbling Negative: The arms that clamp to the bike don't have a lot of available positions to move them in to grab the bars on the bike. Especially for these e-bikes. It makes it a bit more time consuming than those that just support bikes from the tires. A big reason for me buying this model was the ramp, but ended up just lifting the bikes on, because even though my hitch isn't really that high, the ramp is much too short, making it too steep. That coupled with having too many obstacles to just wheel it up, like the fastening arm needing to fit through the frame, pedals etc. Summary: If easy loading / unloading is a top priority I don't think I'd recommend this one for you. I like the compact size / portability and the fact that it fits my Jeep perfectly, so I'll live with the loading unloading issues. If the clamps were more versatile / ramp was longer I would have given 5 stars. Thule has a longer ramp available, but that's more $$ to an already pricey rack. Plus it won't stow away inside the unit.
Install and load e-bike in less than 10 mins
I’m 52 / female and not the strongest, but still in decent shape. With this rack having wheels, I’m able to roll it out from my garage, lift and hook it up to my 2021 Hyundai Tucson (hitch installed after market by U-Haul). I bought the extra long ramp and I can easily load my 55lb e-bike that has fenders. I’ve had it over a year and taken my bike out on many rides in the local area and the rack is holding up nicely. I highly recommend this investment for any bike, especially ebike owner.
Our bikes were a challenge - but the rack works
We have two 2019 Riese + Muller Nevo GX e-bikes. The bikes are about 60 lbs. each, and step-through models with no top tube. The Thule Easyfold mounting system worked. I was able to grab the seat tubes in the jaws of the support struts. The wheel straps fit the 2.4" tires just fine. I did not know if the rack would clear the spare tire on the Jeep's tailgate, but it did. (I could not find any photos online to show if this would work, so I took a couple and attached them to this review.) Nothing rubs, not even the pedals. Because the rack mounts so high, the included loading ramp was pretty much useless - so I had to lift the bikes onto the rack. (The ramp was still too steep, even when run from the top of the curb next to the parked Jeep.) I did try the tilt-back feature, but because the tailgate must swing all the way open on a Jeep to lift the rear glass, and I could not get into the back. So plan accordingly in your packing. I will add a couple of extra "safety" load straps to further secure things and provide back-up to the Thule clamps. When you tilt the rack back to get in your car hatch be sure to fully engage it back in place when tilting it upright. You must push it back into place firmly and there is a decisive click when it engages - failure to fully lock it into place means the bikes would tilt back unexpectanly when underway.
Good rack, BEWARE knob lock
We purchased this rack a month ago. We had an excellent demonstration of the rack at the Seattle store, including putting the e-bike I was buying, on the rack. This included instruction to tighten the knob until it "clicks". We used the rack for the first time a couple days ago. After riding, my husband engaged the knob lock as he stopped for lunch at local golf club. While there, the manager happened to see a man unstrap the wheels and then"pull" the bike off the rack! The man took off on the bike and he chased him in his truck, caught up to him and was able to get the bike back. We have a heavy duty U-lock, which we will use to lock the bike to the rack.
