Best of 3 Brands I've Tried
I have tried Sugoi, Pearl Izumi and these Bontrager Sun Legs, and these are my favourite. The grippers do not create the sausage leg effect, and they do their job well
Work perfectly with bike shorts
I bought these for a three day bikepacking trip through the desert where I was basically in direct sun the entire time. I went with sun sleeves, sun legs, and a lightweight neck buff so I could minimize sunscreen use. The short version is, they worked perfectly. My legs did not get sunburned (or tan) and the tights never fell down or became uncomfortable. I am 6', 170 lbs and went with a medium. With that said: I am assuming that those commenting on them not staying up are not wearing tight bibs/bike shorts over them that keep them in place. The rubber grabbers alone are not enough to hold them up with hours of pedaling. So if you prefer to wear loose fitting shorts, these would likely not be the right product to use.
Works for running as well
I was looking for something to use for a summer near-marathon-length trail run in full sun. I already have plenty of gear for running in winter- typically black and oriented toward warmth- which is definitely not appropriate for summer. These aren't in the running section of the store, but I figured there was no reason why they wouldn't work. The associated product info has a lot of buzzwords that probably have very little actual significance- "ice-fit", "skin cooling in-R-cool technology" and such. They're less warm than full on pants or winter running tights, but there's no way that they're "cooler" than wearing just shorts and having most of your leg exposed, especially for running where you don't have the benefit of moving against air at 15-25 mph. I didn't get sunburn though, so they worked as a covering, and they're lightweight enough. The top did not stay up when I tried to put the top band over compression shorts, perhaps unsurprisingly, but they were fine when they were under the compression shorts.
do not breathe but would be great leg warmers
I found these sun legs do not breathe. My bike shirt breathes more than they do. A friend bought them and plans to return them. They are too hot on a ride and need to be removed once the chill leaves the summer air. I have their sun sleeves and they work great. WHAT HAPPENED? I gave them 2 stars instead of one because they stay up and do not slip
Stops sunburn
I'm in Paraguay where the temperature reaches 118° F. and the sun is direct. To date I've not had sunburn problems, even during long rides in the afternoon.
Be smart...buy these
If you want to make a fashion statement...don't buy these because everyone knows that white leggings are ugly. Unless that fashion statement is around educating all the sun loving fools in this world about proper protection against the solar radiation that emits from that giant ball of fire that rises every morning...then these are great! They are white...they are ugly and they are going to get dirty. But at least you won't die a painful death from getting skin cancer on your legs. And yeah, they may make you a little warmer but duh, it's fabric...pour some water on them to cool off! Measure your thigh before buying and chances are, if you're like most cyclists with huge muscular thighs, they'll fit. And if you don't have those perfect muscular biker thighs, yeah, they give you sausage legs. But again...not buying them because I look great in them! They are perfect for what I wanted which was sun protection for long rides so I don't have to slather myself in sunscreen every couple hours. Be smart and buy them.
Great for Paddlesports!
I bought these specifically for kayak fishing. I was looking for something to protect my legs that didn’t involve rubbing chemicals all over my body and these fit the bill perfectly! They are soft and comfortable. I spent about 4 hours in the direct sun while fishing and found these leg covers to do a fantastic job of keeping the sun at bay. After a few minutes of wearing them you kind of forget you even have them on. They kept me cooler than wearing pants and if you do get hot you can wet them down. I wore them with a pair of loose fitting quick-dry shorts. Combined with an spf T-shirt, sun sleeves on my arms and a wide brim hat, I had complete chemical-free sun protection that won’t wear off with sweat or water! I’m really pleased with how these leg covers worked for me!
Blocks the sun and stays put while cycling
Tried these out on a tour of the GAP and C&O. In terms of blocking the sun, they worked great! For staying in place, I had no issues with them while biking. Sun Legs were pulled up and overlapped by my cycling bibs, so I doubled down on the locking in place. The only time I had an issue with the legs staying up was when I was walking around excessively.
Good, not great
The sun legs work great, but since they are white they are impossible to keep clean. I’ve tried hand-washing as well as machine washing and dirt stays. Other than that they are great.
Protecting With Sticky Sunscreen
Protect your skin without using slimy, sticky sunscreens. These have been a big help when long distance cycling in the desert. I also use the arm sleeves too.
