Ideal extra layer of protection
It's perfect for me. This is my outer-layer jacket for daily hiking and other adventures. It's kept me dry in rain, kept me much warmer than without it in freezing weather and fierce winds, and been easy to put away when I don't need it. I like breathable layers in temps 20* and above; but add this as needed; great. I buy outer layers really big, in case of need over puffy insulation; and this jacket adapts well. Its drop-tail shape covers my waist-pack, on light-gear days. It's very light to tote; packs fine into the chest pocket; stores well in outer pocket of back-pack or waist-pack. Great color to stay visible. The cuffs are an excellent design, with elastic at lower wrist but smooth shaping on top of wrist, best I have seen, easy to handle over woolly gloves. And a two-way zipper! Fabulous.
Good windbreaker with annoying hood
I like this jacket a lot, but I find the hood useless and annoying. My fault, I didn't realize it was a helmet compatible hood in the store. Had I tried out the hood in-store I probably would have skipped the jacket. But I'm glad I didn't because the pros have outweighed the cons. I bought this because I forgot to pack my patagonia airshed. Overall this jacket is very close in function/performance, but for less money. And this jacket has a full zip and better (longer) fitting sleeves. I also like the bright color for being visible but not fluorescent yellow. The color and full zip actually have me reaching for this now when riding to work. I would also compare this closely to a squamish jacket I borrowed once, but IMO this has more tailored fit and a better feeling fabric. I would wear this with short-sleeves. You should buy this for a wind resistant, breathable jacket, that will bead off only some light drizzle, but will then dry quickly. You should not buy this expecting a waterproof shell that will magically keep you bone dry while you are being active in any way. Pros: The material is comfortable, very wind resistant, and breathes fairly well too. Built a little excess sweat and heat on a long single track climb, but after a break at the top it was good to go. Material and stitching is also surprisingly durable and survived without even a snag when I washed out my MTB's front wheel and went down pretty hard on the whole left side. The fit is a little on the loose side for me personally (6' 165, M is good for me), but it fits well over a mid layer. I've had it over sweatshirts and chunky sweaters. So, it's very versatile, but flaps going down hills. I would get annoyed on a fast road ride with this jacket, but any where else (hiking, casual, commuting) it's a good middle-of-the-road fit. There are also a couple functional details that I really like. The zipper has two ends, so you can unzip from the bottom as well. This is good because you can get access to a hip pack or jersey pockets, and you can get some ventilation without turning into a parachute. The chest pocket has been great for stuffing keys or a garage door opener too. Cons: The over-sized hood. It's useless as a hood if not wearing a helmet, and annoys me when doing anything but walking. The elastic cord doesn't have enough adjustment to snug the hood in place without a helmet. The material isn't stiff enough to keep the brim from flopping over into your face. And the hood is so large that it comes down to the tip of my nose, completely blocking my vision. I have to walk one handed through drizzles, holding up the hood so I can see where I'm going. It also doesn't roll up as well as other stowable hoods I've used because the stiff brim is too wide to get a tight roll going. And even rolled it still feels like an ill-fitting collar. But if you don't roll it, it just turns into a parachute when riding and always seems to be flapping around. It's especially annoying when the winds at your back and it's smacking you in the face. It's annoying to the point I'm considering amateur tailoring to get it under control.
good in light rain
While this is good in light rain, it is useless in a downpour. It will do what it says, but nothing more.
Best deal in town for a stretchy windbreaker
I do a lot of hill running and hiking (avg. 25mi/week) and was looking for a light windbreaker shell for cooler days and have to say I've been very happy and impressed by this jacket. The material is excellent: soft, quiet, very stretchy, breathes very well, very good at regulating temp, wicks moisture away and works very well protecting me on windy days. I found I prefer this jacket than to my Patagonia Houdini and quieter and more breathable for my needs. I haven't tested in rain but it does have DWR treatment as water beads up on the fabric but probably only best in a drizzle, it's not a rain shell. It has a double zipper so I can vent it with the bottom zipper up, the hood is big but was able to suck up enough drawstring to make it trim enough around my head and functional without a helmet. You can roll the hood up and there's a strap in the back to keep rolled up. I like the way the arms are hemmed, the chest pocket is the perfect size, it can just fit a large iPhone or headlamp and doubles as a stuff pouch for the jacket; theres no other pockets. The weight was 5oz. but seemed much lighter not too different from the Houdini and I like the grey-olive color. I recently did a run up one of my local trails (1,000' of elev. per mile) with only a thin long sleeve running shirt and this jacket. At the top, temps were 40-42 with gusts to 50mph so it was cold and very windy. I was comfortable and the wind wasn't effecting me. With same configuration I did a mountain climb that required crampons and ice axes, I used the jacket with just a light thermal shirt and it worked great, no restrictions. You can wear this jacket tight on you as it's very stretchy and comfy; if you get sweaty from working out hard the jacket doesn't get cold. I've compared this jacket to Black Diamond, Patagonia and others who make similar jackets selling for much more and I prefer this one. REI did a very good job with this one. I'm a 43" chest/5'11"/19" shoulders (typical Lg) and actually found the woman's XL the best fit for me. I needed something very slim and close to my body for windy days, make less noise and I'm very happy. I found the mens large to be rather big in the arms and waist area, not my preference for windy environments or on a fast bike. The mens large is a normal cut like a typical shell jacket that can take mid layers. The wms. XL was best fit for me, a little snug in forearms but very good every where else and very quiet because of it. Mens medium was too tight in the chest. The type fit you would want for down hill cycling.
Perfect light weight biking windbreaker
Does exactly what it’s suppose to: keep you warm on a chilly day worn over some layers. The over-the-helmet hood is well designed and works better than expected. It’s light enough to fold into a small bundle that’s easy to stow in a pocket. Some have complained about its water repellency, but you’re not going to get a waterproof jacket that is this light. Frankly I prefer it to be light and I’ll just get wet if it’s raining hard.
Soaked through in 15 minute drizzle
First time riding in the rain this year, and was excited to try my new jacket. Immediately started to feel cold and wet and when I got to my destination I took 9f the jacket to find my shirt soaked. This was in a light drizzle that is typical for an Oregon winter. Worst jacket I've ever owned.
Good All-Around Protection
Breaks the wind and adds a little extra (unexpected) thermal protection. So far I've worn it on 5-6 hikes, two in light rain, and it has kept me warm and dry. Also well designed for riding--sleeve cuffs are tapered and feel snug without pinching. Hood adjusts to helmet easily; in fact, the hood is easily modified by folding to accommodate a cap on the trail as well, or double fold and cinch for closer fit. Would of preferred a couple extra colors but that's a minor quibble.
Excellent Fit, Good Breathability
This jacket is great for my morning commutes or breezy rides in every way except I wish it had either hand pockets, or a back pocket or both.
Using mainly for cycling
Very light and packs down very small. Good in light rain and wind. Fits perfectly into a cycling jersey pocket.
Essential Raingear
This item saved my recent bike trip in northern Wisconsin - four consecutive days of rain. Hood fits perfectly over bike helmet. No leaks at cuff. Very light weight and easily packable. Also in the bright yellow color good for visibility to motorists.
