A very good full-zip hard shell pant
Used these pants recently in the ADK's under full winter summit conditions with approximately -22 F windchill. The pants did a great job stopping the wind and ice to keep me from getting any colder. They will pack down into a side hand pocket even though it is not advertised as having an integrated stuff sack (no two sided zipper on hand pockets, so closing/opening is a little tricky when they are stuffed, especially with gloves/mittens on) It's quite difficult to find any full-zip hard shell pants anymore because there's not many available. Short sizes are appreciated! Pros: - Stops the wind and precipitation like no other - Easy on/off - Will pack down into either pocket if you really try Cons: - Waist drawcord is not the best and comes undone easily - Extremely baggy, even if designed to fit over other layers - Longterm durability is questionable; ankle drawcords showed signs of wear after just one outing
Very good value for medium-weight waterproof pants
Very good value for medium-weight waterproof pants. I plan to use these for cycling (commuting) and XC skiing. I really appreciate the full-zip so I don't have to take off shoes to swap the pants on and off. Good hip pockets. Confirmed waterproof in significant downpour. You get a lot for your money with these. My only suggestions: They run a little big - fine for me 5'7' 160 lbs, with pants. Will be loose if you're just wearing leggings underneath. Would love to be able to cinch up waist and ankles a bit more. Other than that, I would purchase these again.
Great value
Great value. These pants have all the features you want in rain pants and they don’t break the bank. I live in the PNW and use these daily to walk the dog and do chores. The full leg zips are great for getting boots on at the bottom, and venting at the top. Can’t say how they will hold up long term yet, but the construction is robust and the material feels sturdy for this price point. I’m 5’6” and purchased the small/short. Fit is as expected, a little baggy to allow layering. Just a tad long. I think these would work up to 5’7” possibly 5’8” if you have short legs.
Rain pants as windbreaker
The REI rain pants with full hip to feet zippers work well with PNW winters. Easy to take off, a little hard to pull on. Waterproof helps keep the moisture off everything under them. Pants breath well too for short, two hours of hiking, duration activities. Because they are water resistant, wind does not blow thru which helps keep legs warm without bulkiness. Pockets are ok, better to use pack for items. Pockets on older REI stowable rain pants were cut looser and work better.
Very useful, truly waterproof, great on motorcycle
Useful on my motorcycle when out and it starts to rain. With the full side zips they are very easy to step into w/o taking my boots off and quickly getting back on the road. The side zips are two-way zips which allow me to reach into the pants I'm wearing underneath to get my money when I roll into a gas station while wearing them. Needless to say, the pants remain waterproof at speeds of over 50mph so they should work for you if you're in a high wind and rain situation.
Crucial Addition for Heavy Rain Gear
These pants are really only necessary in torrential rains. I learned that "quick-dry" pants are meaningless if there is never a chance for them to dry, and these rain pants fixed that issue. The full-zip feature makes donning and removal of these pants in a hurry incredibly easy. Other pants that were not full-zip still required me to drag my muddy boots down the inside of the legs, and though flared bottoms prevent boots from catching at the cuff, they still make a mess inside These pants trap body heat, which is great when it's cold and raining, but a bit much if temperatures are not low. Regardless, it loses not points from me because of this fact. Pants can take some abuse as I never felt the need to be careful, despite how thin they might feel. And of course, they kept my pants bone dry, and as soon as the rain lifted, removal was just a few seconds' break. The pants fit a little loose, but when you are supposed to be wearing them over your standard hiking pants, this is of course ideal and intended. When worn with pants underneath, they were a perfect fit and had none of the bagginess I've read about with other pants.
Works but needs something better than a drawcord
Bought and used these pants. These work but the drawcord to hold them is a bit of a joke. Pants at this price merit a better holding system or even a belt. Why is REI producing such bad holding systems for their pants? go back to basic, just put belt holders.
Best in class, so far
Design and fit is the best I've found so far, in this product category. I usually take a size 33/30 with street pants, and medium short fits perfectly. (Outdoor pants are usually longer than I want, even though I would think I'm a pretty typical size.) I like the adjustable elastic in the cuff, to provide a tight fit around ankles—not a substitute for gaiters, but helpful in many circumstances, with almost no weight/bulk penalty. Elastic, velcro tabs, and drawstring at waist provide a good range of fit. I've had similar pants from higher and lower end companies (Marmot, Red Ledge, etc) and the “breathable waterproof” coating always wears off in a year or two. I assume that will be the case with these, too, but the packability and light weight is important to me, and reasonable price is good. (I always have these in my pack, in case of emergency or sudden bad weather—full zip is essential, so as to be able to put them on without removing boots.)
Rain pants are not waterproof
Used pants a total of 4 times. Just this week was out walking the dogs during a storm for over a hour and water got in the right leg at knee high and I got soaked. I checked and made sure all zippers were closed before heading out in the storm since the previous time I noticed a slight feeling of wetness in the same area however had noticed that zipper was open so blamed breach on not being zipped up. The other two times I used the pants were light rain days. Pants are not waterproof during heavy down pour. Move on and try something else unless I got a defective unit.
NOT Waterproof for long
Very comfortable, easy to get on and off, but NOT WATERPROOF. At least, not for more than about 20 minutes. After that, expect to get soaked. If you're planning to go hiking...consider a different product.
