Changed size/color since last year!
I bought a pair of black Arizona Birkenstock Essentials from REI last summer and needed a new pair this year so I came back to the source! I was surprised when I opened my box and the color was a metallic silver/black (doesn't match advertised picture) as well as the change in sizing! I thought I was going crazy so I took a picture of my new pair (39s) between my old black essentials (39s) and my Birkenstock Mayaris (39s). You can see the new pair is smaller than the others and this gives you a good comparison on the new color vs black as well. Overall, I'm always a huge birkenstock fan but now I need to go and exchange them for a 40 since the "new" 39 is too small.
Color does not match picture
I have been interested in getting a pair of these for a while. They are very light and comfortable. I hope they hold up for a long time.. we shall see! I was expecting the color to be darker and less silvery.. I most likely would not have kept them if I had known this was the true color.
Not the same as the last pair
There is a problem with the sizing/chart listed and size availability. The original pair of these that I purchased last year are great, and I love them. There's a problem with the most recent pair: they are too narrow! Both sizes that I have are the same, but the latest pair that I purchased 5/2020 do not fit the same and are visibly smaller. Both have the same size stamp inside the strap, but when I placed the new ones to the bottom of the old pair (same style, different color), the shape is different and the size is smaller. The sticker on the box indicates that these are "narrow fit", but there is no option on the site to purchase the "regular fit", and no indicator that these were "narrow fit" at the time of purchase. It's a little bit frustrating. Birkenstock's website lists both sizing options, but REI missed on that :-(
Camp shoes with support and style
I originally bought these for camp shoes while backpacking - I love birks and wanted something with support and that I could slip on with socks for late night bathroom runs. These were perfect! (I think 6oz for the pair, size 38, worth its weight to me!) They surprised me by not only being comfortable and supportive, but due to the grip sole I was able to cinch them down and use them in river crossings and on rocky uneven camp sites. I've since use them on beach trips and in the backyard. I wouldn't recommend them for all day wear, but I definitely have gotten my money's worth out of them!
Buy these
These sandals are amazing! I wear them pretty much 24/7 in the summer. They’re great for walking — I average about a 5-mile walk in these every day. Your feet don’t get sweaty, so the soles don’t stink (which is a problem for me with traditional Birks). They’re also perfect for around the pool. I have the Anthracite color, which is a muted metallic dark gray, and the Copper, which is a metallic bronze. Both colors work as neutrals and actually elevate an outfit. My first pair of these lasted three years with pretty much constant wear and a lot of miles put in. I waver between an 8.5 and a 9, and the 9 (40) fits me best.
when crocs meet Birkenstock
I’ve been on the fence about crocs, but when I tried these on I couldn’t take them off. They’re the same style/look or the classic Birkenstock Arizona, but the material is like that of crocs. They’re light, comfortable and hold up to the outdoor elements. I love that I don’t have to sacrifice my even Birkenstock tan, to the heat or water that usually damages regular Birkenstocks. I’ve taken these to the ocean, to the poolside, and many lake/creek days. They’re easy to rinse off and great to slip into at the end of a hike or waking up on a campground.
Good house sandals
I have plantar fasciitis so I can't walk around the house without some kind of supportive footwear. These are pretty comfortable and lightweight. My feet do sweat a little more just because they are made of whatever EVA is. They're easy to clean and will be a good alternative to flip flops during cabin weekends. I got the metallic anthracite colorway, and it's definitely more metallic than the photos show. These run pretty large. I wear a women's 8 in sandals, for which the sizing chart recommends a 39. I had to return and get the 38 instead.
Fit is weird
I’m a big fan of birks, so I was excited to see them in submersible. I ordered my normal size, 37. I take a regular, but the rei site didn’t specify regular or narrow. The 37s were too small overall, so I ordered 38s. This was clearly my size, but the toe ridge bisects my big toe, and the shoe is narrow. Not the comfort I was seeking, so they’re going back.
Not large. Don't size up.
Just here to counter the reviews saying size up. I am generally an 8 (or 7.5), and always a 39, so I read your reviews and ordered with confidence. Huge! I re-ordered the 38s, and they fit fine (snug, but sandals). I checked an older pair of Birks and they are 38s, and fit exactly the same. I guess I would like an extra centimeter, so maybe a half size, but the 38s will work. I can’t strongly advise to size down, but this is your grain of salt for the other reviewers saying they’re tiny. I found them large.
Backpacking champion
I brought these on my recent four day backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite for camp shoes. They performed great in the rocky river beds as water shoes and as comfy slippers with some wool socks at night in camp. About 20 miles into the trip, my right hiking boot--out of nowhere--became incredibly painful to wear due to rubbing against my ankle bone. I couldn't find any alteration to make the boots comfortable, so I hiked out the last 7 miles in one boot and one Birkenstock EVA sandal. The sandal performed phenomenally on smooth and sometimes wet granite steps and inclines hiking out of Glen Aulin into Tuolumne Meadows. Sizing: my normal street shoe size is a 7.5 medium in women's. I sometimes wear a size 8 women's in hiking boots. In Birkenstocks, I wear EU 37 narrow in the Arizona EVAs (which is a 6-6.5 in US sizes) and a 37 normal in Mayari.
