Pros/Cons Honest Review of BD 9.4, 80m Non-Dry
(Preface - I'm reviewing this right out of the packaging.) FACT: Like other ropes, Black Diamond has contracted a company to make their ropes. You can read the blogs and REI's Mountain Project forums. Also, this product is not made in America (see photo, it's made in CZ). I don't care about that, but others might. I'm not rating this rope on any of that stuff. Here's what I am rating it on. PROS: - Stiff/tight sheath that will keep the diameter skinny. - Price point! No joke. If you've got a coupon, a dividend, it's a good opportunity to try and 80m rope. - The end caps. Some may think this +1 I'm mentioning is stupid, but it matters to me. Out of the bag/bands, I don't need to redo the end caps that so many ropes don't do correctly to make it last. See photo. I likey likey, - Flies through a famous assisted braking device just like non-assisted braking belay plates. This is especially awesome for me because I know how to use the famous assisted braking device correctly and can feed just like a non-assisted braking belay plate and only rely on the assisted braking when climber is resting at her/his gear. I like to keep my brake hand away from the devices and this helps with feeding easily and super quickly. - The color! See my photo. It's actually a pretty bright yellow and not a stone ground mustard color. It won't last and probably turn into the Stone Ground Mustard bleh. But it's bright as new and shiney! - The gram weight matches the competition. - REI return policy? =) As with any REI purchase, I would definitely consider that aspect of this purchase. CONS: - Sheath isn't soft and you'll notice when pulling rope to clip. Beware of pulling/clipping burn on your index fingers. Sport climbers, sticky belays, you know what I mean. - Stiff/tight sheath that will keep the diameter skinny is also super tight out of the gate. See the snake coil photo that would just sit there for hours and not relax. It's not as bad as some of the other company's ropes, but it's definitely... um... excited? Maybe running it through gear on weight will chill it out. - Not dry treated. I'm not sure this matters. This is actually my first non-dry treated rope. The feel is similar to other dry-treated cords by BD so I wanted to give it a shot. I'm not doing alpine, I only care about dirt repelling qualities - we'll see. - The middle marker is SERIOUSLY LAUGHABLE. See photo. 1in (or 2.54cm if you're metric). !!! Beware full pitch trad-heads !!! This is a sport climbers rope looking to do 40m routes with lowers or link pitches for enduro-routes.
Solid dynamic rope, great for its price point
Rope did a fine job as our belay line for a technical climb my project team completed recently. The rock was extrme flaky with numerous chert shelves, which made me a bit nervous, but it did not sustain any abrasion damage (not even fuzzing). Very pleasant diameter, and good weight for its size (70m). Smooth ride when rappelling with an ATC. I'm not sure why other users are complaining about the feel of the sheath. Their hands must be significantly softer than mine...
Ye Olde 9.4
Used this rope many times for outdoor climbs, feeds well and handles well. One gripe includes twisting, which seems to happen often. For the price however, this rope is durable and bright, cleans easily, and takes care of all my needs for fair weather rock climbing. I like the light weight and the middle mark has yet to wear off as of yet.

Great Rope
With two seasons of use I can say that this rope performs as I hoped it would. Lightweight, smooth handling and ties/unties knots easily. Being a thinner rope with a light sheath this isn't for working your project. I've kept this as my alpine and multipitch line and it's holding up great.
Great rope. Soft catch. Knots nicely. Got the 60m. Feds through Grigri and atc smoothly. Haven't had fraying or sheath issues mentioned in other reviews. Climbed on around 15 times. More of a green color.

Not experiencing the sheath issues reported by others, handled some decent abuse without concern.
Although I have seen several reviews talking about the sheath fuzzing, and while I don't doubt their experience, I have taken it on a number of abusive trips without issue.

Naked on the sharp end
Solid, good rope... BD ropes are subtle and flow easily with ATCs The bright color is also radical Note: best used with more clothing
Breaks Down Fast
After 3 months of weekend use swapped out for my boyfriend's rope every other weekend and with a gym rope during the week, I have a serious mushy point along with fuzziness on this rope. Imagine my horror as I looked down on a pitch to see my pants covered in yellow flecks. The rope was shedding all over me. Good thing I bought an 80 meter. Definitely not happy to be cutting this thing so quickly. It handles nicely, I like the color, but I expect my rope to at least last more than one season.
Sorry your 9.4 rope is not holding up as well as you would like. With only three months light use on it you are still within our warranty period, you can file a warranty claim with us here: (https://warranty.bdel.com/CreateCase/StepOne).
The Right Rope!
I hate a rope that's unnecessarily long and was happy to see BD still stock 40m cords -- enough for our local crag and less to coil. Also, the double weave sheath is smooth and has to run through biners easier...... Also.......it's yellow! So the middle mark shows up well. Also, there IS a middle mark......so I don't need to mess with laundry markers.Praise be! 9.4 is a bit thinner than I'm used to, but this 58gm/m still seems sturdy enough to catch me if I need it to.
Surprisingly resilient
Just wrapped up guiding two weeks’ guiding in the Black Hills with two of these 80m cords (required for some of the extended pitches and TR situations we were rigging for clients.). Rope selection is always a trade off, but I was surprised by how light and packable these were- and even more surprised by how well they held up to group TR days over long pitches of rough rock. Price is a sweet spot, too. I’ll be stocking more of these for sure.
