Of the Highest Quality Money Can Buy!
Like every product I have from Fjallraven, it is of the highest quality clothing money can buy. Some people complained about the sleeve length but this is silly, just button the snaps on the wrist and the sleeve won’t go past your wrist then. I like the longer sleeves when unbuttoned because it’s more protection when I need it and easy to snap up when I don’t. I won’t go into too much detail on this as there are tons of reviews that talk about how great their products are. I’m here to talk about sizing since that’s what I struggled with before purchasing this jacket. For reference I am a medium in 80-90% of clothes and a large the remaining 10-20% of the time. I have a 39” chest, 32” waist, have a sleeve length of 32-33 inches, am 5’ 11” tall and weigh 175 lbs. All that said, this jacket fits great in a medium and even allowed me to layer up underneath. In the above photos I am wearing a cotton T-shirt as well as a Polartec pullover fleece under the jacket and I have plenty of room without it feeling tight or uncomfortable. I could easily have added a merino wool shirt under the Polartec as well with no problems. As far as water repellency goes it was such right out of the package. I wanted basically waterproof so I mixed up some “Greenland wax” myself consisting of 90% gulf paraffin wax and 10% beeswax. Poured into bar using a soap mold from hobby lobby. After it hardened I used it to put a heavy coat of wax on the hood and shoulders and a lighter coat on the rest of the jacket with the exception of the armpits because I wanted them to vent as much as possible. The pic of the jacket where it looks frosted is before melting the wax in. The other pics are after melting it into the fabric. I melted the wax into the cloth with a hairdryer and then tossed the jacket in the dryer on high heat for about 10-15 minutes with some other clothes to ensure it was evenly soaked in everywhere. Overall I’m very happy with this jacket. I got rid of my synthetic rubbery rain jacket because I hated that it didn’t breathe and wasn’t as durable in the woods as this one will be. Hope this review and sizing info helps someone.
4 season Jacket. Best Quality ive ever owned.
Ive owned this jacket for 3 years. Better than Patagonia Torrentshell. Very waterproof and really good looking jacket. I use it for dirtbiking, fishing, snowboarding, and bad weather. 4 season jacket.Keeps the sun off me on the kayak i wet it in the river and wear it all summer too. Best rainjacket ive ever owned. Not insulated or very warm youll need layers underneath when colder than 45°
Awesome
So I needed a versatile jacket. I seen reviews on how washing this to remove the wax makes it breathable but waxing traps warmth and waterproofs it. Feels durable and as I write this review I just received this item. So I haven't put it to good use just yet but stylish look for causal wear but practical uses for the outdoorsman. It is a fitted style so make sure you keep it in mind. I tried on their Raven jacket in store and the fit is fairly similar to this one. The sleeves tighten up well compared to the Raven. Can't wait to follow up on this and only reason I didn't max it out was due to a lack of use as it is new.
Stylish and durable
I got this last fall as a durable everyday shell. It works well by itself in spring/summer temps and layers nicely for winter activities. The first time I wore it out in the rain I was gardening in a medium-heavy rain for an hour or so, and when I got back inside the rain had soaked through to my shirt around the neck and shoulders. I then liberally applied Greenland wax to the hood, neck, and shoulders, using a blow dryer so it would soak in, and since then I haven't gotten wet. (It's also worth noting that you can bring this or any Fjallraven product to one of their stores and they will happily do the waxing for you for free) Sizing is a little on the large size -- I'm usually a small or medium, but with this one I was choosing between extra small, which would look a little more trim, and the small, which would let me layer more underneath. I went with the small. The arms are cut a little long so you can climb / reach above your head without tugging any of the rest of the jacket out of place. It's great for that, but when my arms are at my sides I do need to have the wrists snapped tight or else the sleeves hang down over my palms to my knuckles.
The perfect outdoor jacket.
I have lots of mountain gear, but unless it's howling and I need a hardshell, I always reach for this jacket. It has now been most of the way around the world with me. Whether I'm doing multi-day treks or exploring new cities, it's great at everything. The cut is perfect. I'm English but perhaps I have a Swedish body. I have finally found a jacket with perfect length sleeves! The articulation is great, it has a decent hood that doesn't get in the way, and there is a thoughtful layout to the pockets. I have also introduced two of my friends to Fjallraven jackets, and they adore them. As long as Fjallraven keeps this cut/sleeve length, they have a faithful customer for life right here.
Size up if you want to add layers
I really like the padded version of this jacket and I wanted the same to use as a windbreaker/rain jacket. I initially ordered the same size (XL) as the padded version, but it was too tight, even without layers. So I ordered the XXL, thus the 4 stars. The fit is great for me, 6'5" about 250#, and there is enough room to add fleece layers under the jacket for added warmth. I like the longer sleeves and overall fit of the jacket. I have not yet been in the rain with it, but I have a feeling that with enough wax applied it should be fine, and I like that I don't have to add more chemicals to get the water repellant features, and the jacket will not melt if that spark from the campfire lands on me.
Odd fit
I am 6'1'' 240lbs with large thighs from athletics in my youth. For skinnier guys this jacket will probably work out great. Unfortunately, for me this jacket just didn't work. The fit at the bottom of the jacket is really tight for me. I could barely get the zipper started when the jacket was hanging at it's full length, despite everything else fitting me correctly (I ordered an XL). Once I had the zipper closed, the jacket squeezed me around the thighs making the jacket uncomfortable unless I pulled it up over my thighs. It wasn't really designed for this and it looks weird and baggy when it's pulled up. I ended up returning the jacket, which is a shame as I wanted it to work, but couldn't justify keeping it due to the flaw in the fit (for me). I don't understand why it was designed to be so narrow around the bottom as it has draw strings to tighten it up if that's what's desired.
stylish and functional
Saw this jacket when I was looking for something to wear during the in between weather here in Vermont while hiking and backpacking. Came across this and just knew it would be perfect. It’s light enough so you don’t feel weighed down, but not too light that you feel you’ll destroy it quickly. Fjällraven is known for high quality gear, and this definitely lives up to that stigma. I love the pockets strategically placed for easy access to stowed items. The material feels like a heavy wrung cotton shirt, so breathes easily when trekking through the woods. Water rolls off this jacket like a ducks feather, and if you need to re-waterproof it, you just use the Greenland wax and a blow dryer. I would not recommend an iron to reapply the wax, as it is harder to gauge the temperature of the iron. If you do, set it on the lowest temperature setting. For size comparison, I’m 183 CM tall, weigh 79 kg, and an average build. I wear a large and fits perfect.
Okay, not great.
Not really impressed with quality. Fit is not quite right. Sleeves are too long. I'm 5'9 with average length arms, and the sleeves cover half of my hands with the medium. If I had gotten small the jacket would have been too tight in the chest because the medium fits closely around my torso. I have the Expedition Pack Down in medium and the fit on that is perfect and feels very high quality. Not sure why this jacket is so much looser, and it seems to be a step down in quality for sure. Also, the zipper gets stuck easily and feels cheap. I would not buy this jacket again.
Great jacket, DID NOT FIT
XXXL DID NOT FIT. Yes it is a 4 star review of a product that I cannot wear and have returned. I am 6'4" (193 cm) and 245 lbs (111 Kg) with a bit of a pot belly. I really wanted this jacket to fit, but it was too tight in the belly, and I could not sit or bend over without my belly stretching the jacket. I have other Fjallraven products, A Nuuk parka, in XXXL that fits perfectly, but the Skogso was too tight in the belly. It fit perfectly in the shoulder, neck and sleeves. So, sorry chubby people this is not the jacket for you. Maybe in the future Fjallraven will go the same route as other clothing manufacturers and offer extended sizes for big, but active people. Other than that great clothes(when they fit)
