I bought these several years ago and never wore them. I love wool socks, and since these were thick and warm, I just held on to them. Well, I wore them FOR THE FIRST TIME yesterday, and a big hole formed near the toe on the top of the sock where there is an elastic seam. Poorly built. I wish I had started wearing them when I first bought them so I could return or exchange them. I expect better quality from REI products. These socks make me want to avoid REI-branded merchandise in the future because even if they are defective, they can't be returned if you wait too long. Bummer.
I wore these for the first time on a shake-down hike on a hot day with a full pack. Used them for a real backpacking trip after that, on a not-as-hot weekend. These socks are comfortable and just the right weight for summer hiking (three seasons, probably). They show no signs of wear, pilling, or shedding, even around the high-wear area (top of the boots). I can't say the same for some name-brand marino wool socks I bought and used on the same trip. I'll definitely buy these again.
I have a number of pairs of these socks. I use them for hiking, motorcycle commute everyday of 108 mile round trip, I wear them in my dress shoes at work. Great fit and wear. Wash up great. Can't say enough good about these socks for every use.
So far, only have one pair and could easily make this my winter go-to sock for everything. I like that for me (5'3", 120 lbs) they almost go to my knees. The fit is snug and they don't fall down. They are not too thick, nor too thin.. just right. They are warm and very comfortable. I wore them today hiking a bit and feet were comfy in boots at 45 degs. They wash up nicely and keep their shape. I air dry them. They are size-appropriate for me. They also don't bunch up in the toe area. Very much appreciate that.
Wore the socks on a 5-mile. They're ok, but too thin on the bottom and heel. Other brands I've purchased have more cushion where it counts. Of course, these were cheaper, so probably a fair value. They do look good.
LOVE these socks! Just bought them yesterday for this weekend of hiking and they were perfect! Breathable but still kept my feet warm. Planning to buy another pair!
Good hiking sock, keeps your feet comfortable, and dry.
I bought two pairs of these to wear with my Merrell hiking shoes for an upcoming trip as my winter wool socks are too thick. I would not consider them to be hiking socks as they are a very soft, thin wool blend. The heels and toes are reinforced, but they lack the thickness for needed extended walking and hiking. They will work well as warm dress socks, but shouldn’t be advertised as technical (whatever that means) hiking socks.
Seemed to be a good sock in the store. I was searching for tall hunting socks and these were recommended in the store. I even tried them on. They looked like they were going to be an inexpensive sock that fit what I was looking for. Then they were washed. They lost 5 inches of height on t he first wash and dry. I am not used to having to air dry my socks so, if you want these socks air dry them!
Great socks and I'm hard on socks note, Asian heritage means we seldom if ever wear shoes in the house...so it really puts the onus on our socks to hold up...these have done very well!
