2-in-1 Travel Pack
Osprey Fairview 55L (42L + 13L day pack) S/MMain Pack holds about 10 days of mild weather clothes and extra shoes (+ souvenirs) Day Pack is a good size, a bit narrow and the mesh pockets are a miss, too small to store most water bottles securely and tight fit when pack is at capacity. Overall the pack is good for shorter treks,1-3 miles, and getting in and out of airports, public transit. When separated the main pack fits well between seats and into stow away compartments. Check out user videos for all the features, I found them very helpful in determining if this bag would work for me. Personally at 5'-9" I really enjoy the packs fit, but I would not recommend it for long hauls, repeated bag checking (without cover), and wearing the pack zipped together when filled to capacity. It feels too deep and the weight distribution is off. My favorite feature are the clips to carry the day pack in front.
Great pack...BUT...not ideal for taller gals
I bought this pack for a 2 week, long haul flight back to the States from Germany. I traveled with my 3 yr old and was able to fit both of our clothing (thanks to packing cubes) in this bag. Everything was great! It stowed easily in the overhead bin on the plane and I put the daypack under my seat no problem. The only issue was ... this pack killed my shoulders I am 5'9 160lbs. It was so uncomfortable because the size S/M was just too small for my frame. Once I arrived at my location I went to my local REI store and they were superrr helpful. In the end I exchanged this pack for the men's Fairpoint 55 M/L and it fits like a dream. I was bumed because I loved the color of the Fairview but comfort > color I guess. Overall, I would reccommend this pack to anyone and everyone under 5'8.
A backpack to die for
Great backpack for backpacking adventures. Love all the specs of it, all very useful. I love the most was the day pack and the stow away compartment when you want to check in your bag and of course the zippers that you can lock to keep your belongings safe. I got the 55L Rainforest Green and I love the color and the materials used to this bag. It is very durable. Can’t wait for another adventure coz I cannot wait to use again my Fairview 55L.
Great for train and city travel
The Osprey Fairview 55 Travel Pack is perfect to carry enough clothes for a few days, a sleeping bag, and many other essentials. The detachable backpack was perfect for packing snacks and entertainment items. The main bag could stay in the luggage compartment while I used the smaller backpack at my seat. The bag fit everything I needed and was narrow enough to fit on the city trains without getting hung up. I am only 5'1" tall so it was full size for me, but didn't feel too large! It was very comfortable when using the hip belt and other straps to carry the weight correctly.
Great pack for travel and adventures
I just got back from a 9-day European trip and this pack was amazing. The features are great, it’s super comfortable, can fit as a “carry-on” on planes (somebody did question me, but they measured it and then allowed me to take it on), and is enough to fit everything you need. The zipoff day-pack is perfect when you want a small backpack to fit your valuables, a water bottle, and a rain jacket while walking around the city and leave all your clothes and other stuff in your hotel. I’m doing a week-long trip to Norway and another to Patagonia, and this will be essential for my traveling and hiking needs. Also, I’m 5’8” and this fit me well, for tall girls who are worried it may be too small, it’s not!
Two bags in one!
I needed a carry on bag and a checked luggage bag. I was pleased to find this bag. In the store, I was worried that sat too high, with the lap belt fitting more at my waist than my hips but once I filled the bags with my stuff, the entire bag sat lower and the belt hit at the correct spot. I love that when I check the main bag, I can tuck all the straps in. I also really like the look of the bags; I got the cool dark green with the teal accents. I wish that the bag held a little more, as I really tested the zippers and sewing with all my stuff in Japan. Based on that, I must say that the zippers are sturdy and can withstand great force.
My new favorite bag
I bought this backpack for a cross country road trip. I lived out of it for three weeks and fell in love with all of its features. My laptop stayed safe and secure in the pouch of the smaller, removable backpack. I was able to easily separate the bags when I needed to get work done remotely at a coffee shop. When I flew back home I used the larger section as a duffle bag and fit it easily in the overhead bin of the plane, while the smaller bag stayed with me under the seat, no need to check baggage. The straps and hip belt are very comfortable and the bag feels well-balanced when it's on your back.
Works as a carry on!
I agree with the earlier two reviews, this pack is awesome. We also traveled to SE Asia with this pack and the Farpoint and we were able to stow both bags in the overhead bin, using the daypacks as personal items under our seats. The backstraps zip up easily into the back if you want to carry it as a duffel. And I love the clips that allow you to carry the daypack on the front, clipped to the backpack, in order to keep your hands free. The color is an olive green color, not gray. Excellent pack!
We love it!
We just spent two months traveling/backpacking through SE Asia with both the Men's Farpoint and Women's Fairview and these packs were amazing! They had just the right amount of space to pack our clothing, incidentals and anything we picked up along the way. But they were not so big that they felt cumbersome or awkward to lug around from Tuk-Tuks to Longtail boats. I would recommend this pack to anyone looking for a comfortable, affordable travel pack.
Great for Travel, a few suggestions
I have the 55, my husband has the Farpoint 40. In the last 2 yrs we've used them traveling to Europe and road tripping in the US and have been very happy with them. When flying, the 55 without daypack makes me a little nervous about being carry-on, and I've had to valet check it a few times at the gate, but never had it actually rejected. It DOES fit in the overhead, with the daypack as a personal item. I LOVE the stowaway straps! Best feature! The hip belt also makes it surprisingly comfortable when hustling through the airport (end to end at JFK in 15 minutes!) or standing in line for a long time. The 2 side carry handles being sturdy and padded is also a great feature. Makes it easy to haul in and out of overheads or grab and hustle on buses and trains. The suitcase-style zippers and using packing cubes and the interior compression straps make security checks a breeze! Regarding the daypack, it works, but could use a few improvements. The mesh pockets are too small and definitely the least-sturdy thing about the bag. Mine are already fraying and they don't really fit anything besides a cell phone. I know Osprey will fix it when they actually break, but I think something more solid would be a better choice. Also, I don't like the front clips for carrying the bag "turtle" style. I carry the daypack mostly detached by the top loop. It's very uncomfortable on your hand and a real disappointment compared to the carry handled on the main bag, so sometimes I shorten the shoulder straps up and just carry it by those. Awkward. An improved, padded loop at the top for a handle would be an excellent improvement. An easily accessible internal pocket on the daypack would also be helpful--something to throw your keys in. The outside pocket is secure and works fine for things like earbuds, but I wouldn't put anything important on the outside of the bag while traveling. You can fit a lot more weight in the daypack than is comfortable to carry for very long.
