Beware of front tie down
I purchased the DeckHand Kayak Mounts to use with the roller mounts to make transporting a tandem kayak on the roof of my Outback easier than using my old Yakima J rack. I did not have the difficulty some reviewers experienced strapping the kayak to the mount. The clips to hold excess strap are a nice improvement. HOWEVER, the S hook to fasten the front is a lighter gauge then the S hook that Yakima provided years ago. The first time I used it, the S hook failed while driving 70 MPH, the legal limit on our local Interstate Highway (see photo). The intact S hook in the photo is the one Yakima provided with my old J rack many years ago. It has been used several times on an Interstate and never failed. Notice the heavier gauge. Buyer be ware, this product can be expected to fail when being used while driving the legal speed on an Interstate. If you like the other features, replace the S-hooks before use.
Great mounts
I use these mounts for transporting my fiberglass sea kayaks. They're the only mounts I trust my kayaks to. The cradles and webbing configuration securely holds the kayak in place even against strong cross winds. I've had strong cross winds push boats horizontally over the rollers and smaller mounts without the side support. I transport my kayaks cross country using two sets of these saddles or their predecessors the Mako Saddles. Yes lining up the webbing is tedious, but the easy way to do it is put the buckle end in first through the underside of the saddles, leave it on top of the kayak, and position the webbing through the various slots working away from the buckle. This minimizes the twisting problem with the webbing by avoiding running the entire webbing length through the undermounts.
Don't Like These Saddles
I bought the Yakima Saddles to work with the Yakima Handrolls. After using them several times, I found them to be annoying. Annoying because of having to intricately weave the tie downs through the mounts. My experience is they don't secure really that much more than the Handroll and take forever to tie down. I returned them and bought a second pair of Handroll Mounts. They work great, are very secure, more quiet, take less than a minute to tie down the boat.
Engineering failure
Unlike most mounts, the anchoring straps are not wrapped around the crossbars; rather they are routed through channels located on the undersides of the fitting. They fall out. They become twisted. When carrying two boats the ensuing mess approximates an Italian pasta dish. So, Yakima managed to add insult to injury... not only did my several hundred dollars of previous fitting become obsolete with my new car aero bars but the replacement was terrible. Very unhappy!
horrible
Being a Yakima product you usually can’t go wrong. Well...you will with these. They are too “flimsy” and have too much give when a boat is on. Boat slides everywhere even after you have strapped down tight including bow and stern straps. I’m an avid kayaker and do am average 2 times a week. I’m positive it’s not operator error.
Clever & Effective Boat Cradles
We've successfully installed several pairs of these on customized trailers and dollies for coastal rowing boats. Not sure the bad reviews here are well-founded. Nice features include: low-friction loading (sliding), integrated "suspension" system, solid, easy-to-use clamps. (Yes, the strap is not designed to attached your vessel to the load bar or vehicle, but rather to guarantee optimal fit between the cradles and your boat. Prudent rigging includes a separate (not included) strap for that purpose.)
fits wilderness systems radar 135
best fit for my wilderness systems radar 135 nothing else worked
flimsy
Had hoped these would support my kayak but the weight forced them almost flat.
Great purchase.
This system is a much easier way to get your kayak on top of your car, especially for weight and if an older adult.
Dan's DeckHand Review
A short and quick solution to carrying my kayak on my existing Sequoia roof rack. Easy to install and I am really happy with the results.
