Berry patch necessity
North of the Adirondacks of New York State. These glasses are Mountaineering or Glacier glasses by definition. These arrived yesterday and I gave them the snow removal test for our perimeter road of our Berry patch today. Although I am no "Mountaineer", I spend a great deal of the limited winter daylight in the berry patch. Most of our pruning is done in snowshoes. The side shields are just what I needed. I had a pair of the original explorers back in the 90s and always wanted to replace them. After giving them a day of plowing, shoveling and throwing snow in extreme conditions I have hopes that these last me a lifetime. With spare parts, Julbo has the parts that are easy to order and looks easy enough for a simple berry farmer like myself. Winter of 22/23 has given us our share of snow. Plummeting temperatures and strong winds assure a few hours daily outdoors for snow removal and any other frozen obstacles. So whether we are pruning dormant raspberry plants or checking our fence line. The Julbo Explorer 2.0 checks all the boxes for our needs. Some reviews have questioned the toughness of the Explorer. Now I have had my share of bad, good, and great sunglasses. There are those who are knee deep in Glacier glasses. Not me. One great pair of sunglasses is enough for me. Saving up for reactive lenses. Great online experience REI.
Great for winter summits
Got these for winter summits. They fit great and block sun well! Kind of bug eye looking with them on.
Fit Nicely
I was skeptical as to whether or not I would need this for my Mt Baker climb. I purchased the floor model so I got a bit of a discount. I used them for a 3 day hike and man did I fall in love with them. They are super comfy, look good, big lenses and man did they work well on the sun reflecting off the snow. I may end up using these for mtb as well. They did not fog up during our log and sweaty hike. I was impressed.
New design thumbs down
Have had several explorer sunglasses in the old design and loved them to death, the new design has several flaws. The retainer strap "s" hooks do not fit through the holes in the sunglasses, the adjustable temples do not bend and hold their shape at all and the new design of painting a white frame has not even lasted six months before the "paint" has started wearing and chipping off everywhere, now they look like a cheap $10 pair of gas station sunglasses. Vastly inferior product to the Julbo sunglasses of the past.
Functional, Good Value
I was looking for a functional pair of glasses at a reasonable price. I’m climbin Rainier this year, but don’t know how often I’ll use the, after that, so I didn’t want to invest too much. So far I’ve used them half a dozen times and they’ve done everything I wanted them to. They definitely cut the glare, have a good lense and fit pretty well. Many others that I tried were too wide, but these are a more reasonable width. They come with a strap that you can tighten to hold them in your head, which is very useful.
Awesome Glasses
I never thought I'd be so excited about a pair of sunglasses, but these are awesome. They provide great protection on sunny days on the snow at altitude, but aren't so dark that they can't be worn in filtered sunlight. Ventilation has been an issue with previous glacier glasses I've owned, but not with these. As glacier glasses go, they provide good peripheral vision. Oh yeah, they look cool too.
Motorcycle Nirvana Glasses
Riding Motorcycles or bicycles when the sun is low in the horizon can be dangerous and intense. These Julbo glasses have tamed the sun beast better than any other sunglasses I have owned in the last 40 years. If you wear a helmet the face shield can sometimes interfere with the phtochromatic feature so I just went with dark cheaper version and I am VERY pleased.
Too Narrow - contrast to Julbo Explorer L-size
This new Julbo Explorer 2.0 has the built in silicone nose guards finally, a big improvement over the previous model. However, compared with the L-size Explorer this new model is very narrow. To make it fit I had an optician adjust the nose bridge to open it up a little and still had to use a heat gun to flatten the curve in the temples to widen the frame. If you like this style of glasses you will probably be willing to fiddle with it, but not everyone is up for the hassles.
Outstanding coverage, adjustable fit
I picked these up two weeks ago and have been really pleased with the lens quality and coverage, as well as the fit—once I realized that the arms are adjustable. Out of the box I found them set too narrow for my face, but with some minor adjustment they grip nicely without causing pressure points. The rubber nose pads keep them from slipping down when sweating and the ventilation works well to prevent fogging. Style isn’t for everyone, but purely based on function you cant do much better.
perfect in every way except
It is perfect in every way except the side shields will come off like if glasses catches your jacket when you put it on or take it off. It is very easy to lose. I almost lost one of the shields on Whitney when it fell into a stream. You don't want to look for a small piece when it falls off while hiking on a snowy slope.
