Love this bag. It holds just the right amount of gear (a small dslr, snacks, lights, and even a rain shell). It is perfect for commuting, running errands, and whatever else. We use ours for touring. We thought the locking feature to be kind of a joke, and it would be if your bike was totally out of sight for long periods of time, but for popping into a cafe for a drink (where you can see your bike), it is perfect. I love the touchscreen functionality. My wife has the slightly larger (7L) Medium Plus one, and this, she claims, is the biggest downfall of the size up. The size up does have mesh pockets on the sides though, which the small does not. (perfect for storing a plastic bag or two... you never know when those will come in handy). Both have the shoulder straps which is nice. I also prefer the small because it allows me to more fully load the top of my front rack without interfering with the handlebar bag. My wife can't fit as much because the medium hangers a little lower. One work around you'll have to figure out is a front light. We recommend, if you're not running a forward rack system that has some other option, using a Paul Components Gino. Keeps your handlebars free of clutter, keeps light out of motorists eyes, and allows you to have a light with your awesome new Ortlieb handlebar bag. A few notes on installation (the real reason I'm writing this review--but I couldn't help but note how much I love this bag first). 1 - Make sure that the mounting cable is underneath all other brake/gear cables. If you do not do this, you will risk shearing or kinking your other cables, which can lead to catastrophic brake failure. We found out the hard way. 2 - When installing the tension nuts/screws (the ones you tighten on the bottom of the bracket that will stay on the bike), make sure to completely remove them and apply anti-seize to those bad boys. The nut that rests inside is susceptible to seizing, and perchance you have to remove your mounting bracket, you may end up having to purchase a new one. We found out the hard way. You can purchase a new mounting bracket directly from Ortlieb, if needed (we found out the hard way...). 3 - I've found (after installing several of these), that I much prefer to install it slightly slanting up. That is, slanting so that the bag is tilted towards you. This is particularly important if you opt for the medium... I may be crazy, but I swear this creates slightly less drag. Obviously, when touring you're not racing... But when battling headwinds, no reason to make yourself into even more of a kite. Anyway. Simply, this is really the only bag on the market. Get it and get out there!

Disappointed with Ortlieb!

So far I like the handlebar bag, but I was very disappointed find that Ortlieb did not include the correct hardware in the mounting kit. The kit should have included a M4 SHCS screw to tighten the cable, but instead it came with a hex bolt, which when properly recessed in its hole, cannot be tightened. Rather than return it, I went to the local hardware supply and purchased the correct bolt. I will recommend the product, but not for purchase online. In the store, you could inspect for this defect.

Best handlebar bag

This Ortlieb handlebar bag is exactly what I needed for my cross country cycling trip. I cycled from New York City to Seattle and had zero problems with this bag. It’s small enough to handle in a headwind but more than enough space for snacks , small tools, gloves and my phone. I love the clear pocket on the top. Great for notes or maps etc. (Or in this case to hold my head of Cauliflower)

Perfect for the valuables and essentials

This is small enough to carry around when you need to stop for a while, and large enough to carry all of your essentials. I would keep my wallet, sunscreen, phone, passport, pen, and small snacks in there - anything I might need easy access to without opening up the panniers. Mounting it takes some patience, and I think un-mounting it when you pack your bag to fly does too (because I gave up and cut the cable and now need to buy a replacement...) but otherwise have been pretty happy with this. Photo is of it on my Novara Safari.

Simply Awesome

I bought this bag after much research. I took it on a 335 mile trip On the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O trail and I used it multiple times a day. It's a great place to store your snacks and other accessories while you ride. The top (clear part) of the bag is capable of holding your cell phone so you can look at gps, etc. and is touch screen compatible which is great. You can touch and move your phone straight through the top of the bag. At first I thought this bag was too big but once you have your phone, wallet, snacks, sun screen, or whatever else you realize it's perfect in size. I'd highly recommend it! Riders with carbon fiber bars be forewarned the instructions warn against using this bag with those bars, not sure why but figured I'd add it in my review!

DON’T CUT THE CABLE

We currently have 4 of these Ortlieb 6S Plus Handlebar bags on our road bikes. They make taking light jackets, wallet, rain gear, or snacks very easy. On installation: the cable needs to be very snug and taut around the handlebars and stem in order to stay horizontal. If not, the entire bag will droop down. It is easy to install but my advice is not to cut the cable. The reason is that if it is not snug and you need to remount it and tighten it up you will be able to do so either the entire length of cable. Once you cut it, and it is very difficult to cut, you will not have enough slack to thread the cable and tighten it. Once cut, the ends are now frayed and very difficult to rethread through the openings. I had to order a replacement cable to rectify this situation. Just use electrical tape and tape the excess cable to the mounting until you are 100% certain that the bag will stay put, then cut it if you wish.

Also compatible with KlickFix mounts

Lots of comments about the mount. Many are surprised that the mount is not included. This is probably because depending on your bike, you may need a different mount. Ortleib make a standard mount and a wide mount for bikes with center e-bike controllers. REI now sells both types. Ortleib handlebar bags are also compatible with KlickFix mounts (available on Amazon). The KlickFix mounts also come in standard and wide versions and are easier to install than the Ortleib mount. this is particularly handy if you need to remove and reinstall the mount.

Great features

I bought this a month ago and at the moment I'm using it on a bike tour in Italy. I won't get into the quality, since we all know Ortlieb makes them more than fine. What I particularly like about this bag is that it's very compact although big enough for all the valuables and necessities I need to have easily accessible. the thing I particularly like is the locking system which makes it easy for me to just lock the bike and the bag to the handlebar which prevents it from being opened or taken away by opportunistic thieves. The lid features magnetic closure, which holds tight and is realy easy to handle. Also, everybody is complaining about the Ortlieb mounting system but I found it to be just great. the instructions are pretty clear and the mount holds tight, plus it is klik fix compatible. although the bag is quite small, I like this; because in my opinion not much stuff should be carried in handlebar bag, for obvious reasons, like balance and centre of gravity. So far I have carried my Kindle Paperwhite, matches, tissues, headphones, wallet, three bag straps, a buff, earphones, passport, a light, sunglasses, a watch, and a notepad and a pen, simultaneously in this bag and it all fits just great. Plus it has a convenient map holder. I highly recommend this bag. Although pricey, it is worth the investment.

The "right" size handlebar bag

I have two other Ortlieb Handlebar Bags and the Ortlieb Ultimate 6 S Plus Handlebar Bag fits nicely between the two. It has a lower profile and the front is sloped slightly for reduced wind resistance. I've removed almost all accessory mounts on my bike and carry all the essentials for a ride in a bag that fits the capacity. The built-in map case is a plus. Ideal for holding external batteries.

Best handlebar bag

I first used this bag around town. Super convenient. Am now on a lengthy bicycle tour and feeling like I would've been lost without it.
