Boss Vest for Trail/Ultra Training and Events

I have Nathan and Osprey products including the new VaporKrar12L vest (which is indeed super well thought out and handy--as you'll read, though, I've come to prefer the Salomon). I like each for its strengths, but had not found the perfect balance of features for my needs for self-supported training runs and longer events over 20 miles. I ran with a team member at a 22.5 mile event who was wearing the Salomon Advanced Skin and her input provided with my own try on put it high on my list, but I remained price shy. In planning a backcountry trip on which I planned to run trails solo, I needed room for safety items I don't regularly carry, including my inReach and canister of CounterAttack bear spray, along with survival blanket, rain gear, some extra protein bars and all the usual stuff. I couldn't comfortably fit it into my VaporKrar (which I otherwise love), where items like the bear spray and inReach would be immediately accessible for emergencies. The Advanced Skin 12 handles it all, with my iPhone and inReach riding comfortably and securely in the right dump pocket and the CounterAttack in a perfect cross-draw position nestled against the soft flask pocket in the left dump pocket--I can reverse that, but I prefer a right-handed cross draw and this works. I ran with both 17 oz. flasks and a 1.5L Osprey Hydraulic hydration pack in the back, inside the insulated carrier provided. It will accomodate a 2L pack, but I like the way the 1.5L rides in the insulated holder. Extra socks, LifeStraw, shell and rain trousers, safety blanket, whistle, Black Diamond Z trek poles, a couple of first aid items, head lamp, Gerber utility tool and protein bars, all rode perfectly, secure, tight, 100% comfortable. Zero rubbing, poking, chafing, imbalance, etc. I am 5'8", 165 lbs. with a 40" chest and at first I thought the M/L was too tight, but on further adjustment found it rides perfectly and fits like a glove. As the team runner I spoke to on the trail said, it really does fit like your own skin and you can readily forget it is there. When I grabbed it by the hanging strap or shoulders, it felt heavy in my hands--the load bearing design is so good, once on the weight fully loaded feels negligible. As I drew down fluids, the pack's expandable materials followed the contracting hydration pack and flasks to hold the items firmly in place without bouncing. I secured the Z poles with the provided strap on the top right shoulder and tucked the bottoms into one side of the kangaroo pocket--running 24 miles and 3400' vert never thinking about them when not deployed. The entire system effectively molds itself to your profile and moves with you--there is no sense of lateral or up and down movement or bounce while running. I can foresee hanging enough stuff off this vest, you may find points at which you are aware and/or can feel the items, but with the gear I had it was a pleasure to run in. I reached my right index finger back to the CounterAttack every mile or so, and it was always exactly where I'd put it ready to draw. Same, same when I reached for my iPhone or inReach. As much room as it seems to have, the external pouches all keep the gear where you put it. By contrast, if you choose to go light or remove items, the material in the external pockets elastically contracts back into a more compact streamlined position. I think the volume and load bearing capacity of this vest relative to fit and feel are unparalleled. I did not even use the zip pocket on the back. I have no doubt I can add some additional first aid, insulating top (My NanoPuff will stuff right in the main compartment) and Kammock with no issues. This is the first and only pack that's solved ALL my issues for the long trail runs. I do find, as others have commented, the soft flasks require extra care to replace in their pockets, but the benefit of their ability both to mold to the body and around gear placed in the dump pockets over the top of them, while collapsing down as you drink from them, far outweighs that minor issue. The design intent for those flasks, by the way, is that you'll stretch them up to drink from the valves without drawing them--the vest rides high. If an issue, fit it out with separately purchased Hydrapack soft flasks with extended bite valve straws cut to preferred length and you will never have to remove the flasks on the run. I continue to use and appreciate my FireBall and VaporKrar for local trails and longer road training where I want to carry a hydration pack, but the Salomon Advanced Skin 12 is my go to when carrying the extra safety and survival gear warranted on longer self-supported trail runs requires a larger volume vest. Approaches perfection IMO. Love. It.

Issues with fit, soft bottles, and closure straps.

Fit is always a matter of preference. What feels good for one person, might not for another. I felt the "XL" generally fit like a M/L. I thought perhaps it was just me and my build, however, a couple of days after receiving the vest I happened to see a YouTube review. The individual in the video was 5'9" and weighed 145 lbs. He purchased the M/L and wished he had purchased the XL. I understand the vest is designed to be snug and, again, fit is a preference, but this was just way too tight. The way the vest straps work was a pain. I couldn't imagine fiddling with them in the middle of the night after running for hours. The closure system on the ultra line appears to be much better. Lastly, the bottles. They leaked, badly. The mouth opening was also way too small.

Excellent Hydration Pack

Very lightweight, excellent fit, and plenty of easy to reach storage pockets. Only thing I didn't like (mainly a personal preference) was the soft water flasks. They don't hold enough water and are hard to shove back into the pockets while running. I replaced them with some old hard sided Ultimate Direction bottles that I and thought they worked better. All in all, comfortable enough that it justifies the high price tag. I haven't used it with a hydration bladder on back (just don't like them and prefer bottles), but it seems plenty large enough and rides well enough that I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work great with one.

A great investment

I've had different packs in the past but the ADV skin12 is head and shoulders above the rest. It is possibly my best bit of kit full stop. This is kit that will last a long time and used on almost all of my runs so it is a great investment. The fit is brilliant and you forget you are wearing it because it is so lightweight the elasticated straps at the front are flexible and easy to use. It comes with two soft flasks which mould to your body rather than feeling hard and clumsy. It has so many handy pocket including 2 zip side pockets, a zip front pocket, 2 stretch front pocket a large back stretch pocket a main zipped back with internal pockets and a foil blanket. An insulated pouch to add a bladder if you need it gives you flexibility, I have one but I rarely need to use it at the soft flasks hold 500ml each. What has surprised me is how much I can carry in this vest comfortably and being able to have so much to hand without removing the vest is brilliant. I have recommended it to so many friends who have purchased one too and they are all very happy with it.

Best way to carry all you need.

I am a 51 y.o. Male-experienced marathoner and ultra runner. I have tried many other products over the years and I was never satisfied. Either it was uncomfortable, too heavy, didn't have enough space for food and gear or just made annoying sloshing noises. I was reluctant to by the Solomon skin set 12 mainly due to sticker shock. When the spring sale came around I decided to go ahead and buy it. I have been thoroughly impressed. It is comfortable, light weight and virtually silent. It is worth everything I paid.

Love the way it hugs me

I have tried almost every sort of hydration pack or belt there is and have not found one that fits better than this one. Belts bounce and are uncomfortable. I have tried other vests that did not flex appropriately and seemed to chafe. Vests also tend to overheat me. This vest is the best. It is stretchy and vents well. It still gets hot at times but the mesh drys well and is really comfortable. I ran a 7 miler with the water bottles fully loaded and 2 20oz bottles in the back for my dog. The vest didn’t bounce at all and felt snug but comfortable. So glad I bought and look forward to going longer with it.

Love my new Skin Set! Thank you Salomon.

I have many Salomon hydration packs and they keep on making them better the stand out functions of this latest iteration that I love are the new chest clasps. On really cold days I have had problems unhooking my vest with cold fingers. The new clasp makes this a lot easier. I also like that now the bladder tube mouth piece faces down instead of up. With my previous pack. The tube would sometimes rub on my neck if I didn't tuck it into the front straps. Also love that they now have catch loops for the front water bottles. The only things that I wish Salomon would do in the future is perhaps make a larger version with the same features for winter when I have to carry a lot more clothing and gear. Also would like a small clasp to hold the mouth piece secure. Overall a fantastic pack. Love.

Best ultra running pack out there

I upgraded from the s lab 5 to this pack due to the carrying capacity and it's awesome! I don't like to have drop bags when I run 50 plus mile races and this can really hold a lot of gear. I would highly suggest if you buy this to watch utube videos on how to use all the amazing functions it provides! I didn't know there was an inside hidden pocket where you will find the emergency space blanket. Also I know it's spendy but you absolutely will know why when you wear it and it's worth every dollar. Also, I previously wore the xs/sm in the s-lab 5 and felt it was too tight so I got the m/lrg in this pack. Now, according to Salomon measurements I needed the xs but let me tell you their sizing if for the average built Person. I am 5'4, 145, size 4/6 but with very broad shoulders!! If you are a female with broad shoulders the m/lrg is more comfortable especially when packed full of a bladder, gear and two front bottles. One of the coolest features about this pack is you can cinch up the sides on the back while running so as your hydration depletes and your food gets eaten and it feels more roomy, you just pull on the straps and tighten it to your body!! I can't say enough good things about this. No chaffing and no movement at all!! This pack is definitely made for long days on the trail!!

Even replacement vest had faults

I got my vest. For my 40th birthday. Within 3months the zip broke. I got a replacement but that also had same issue. I was running an ultra marathon and zip went at the start. The loop for the poles also broke. It was bearly stitched on in the first place. Very disappointed after investing money in this product.

Design good, Quality poor

I used this once and already the stitching for one of the front water bottle pouch pockets has come away. This is incredibly poor quality and disappointing, not least for how much the pack cost in the first place. Now a week before my race I will have to pin the pocket together to be able to use it.
