I bought these for our national park drive. Started in CT and drove to Big Bend in TX, then Carlsbad Caverns, Sedona, Goblins, Bryce, Zion, Arches and home. Wore them daily for three weeks. Always comfortable, never slipped. I was confident they would give me the support and grip I needed. This is my second pair. Even after all this, they look new! Glad I chose them. Perfect!
I’ve taken the Merrell Moab 2 mid ventilator hiking boots on 6 hikes so far and overall I’m impressed. The trails were a mix of packed dirt, rock, rock dirt mix, and grades varied from 4-10% on the trail. I spent 26 years wearing combat boots in the Army and I wish we had these. The Merrell Moab 2 mid ventilators are light, offer excellent arch and ankle support, built well, and somewhat breathable. I normally wear a 9.5w but went with a 10.5 in the Merrell Moab 2s. Cons: The Moab 2’s fit is fairly snug but I still get a little movement in the heal of the boot. Merrell could have placed an upper and lower tie on the top part of the boot. Also, my feet sweat a good amount in the Moab 2s but not too excessive. Now, the best for last. Pros: the Merrell Moab 2s are solid and built well. Traction is really good on the rocks, sand, packed dirt wet or dry. I purposely walked in the water at a crossing and surprisingly, the boots kept my feet dry. The Moab 2s have some ability to keep water out. My guess is if you add some water proofing spray you could prolong the water proofing throughout the life of the boot. For those of you in California or other areas that don’t get an excess of rain, you can save the extra cash from not buying the water proof Moab’s. You don’t need it, I live in a coastal community where the trails are usually wet and my feet stay dry. The last pro is the price point. I have not seen a boot of this quality and comfort for the price. I gave the Merrell Moab 2 five stars bc in MHO you can’t find a better boot in the Moab 2’s class.
My go to shoe for hiking! I used these shoes for my PCT hike and they didn’t disappoint. I used the wide width and the foot box was perfect. These held up to some of the most rugged terrain I’ve ever hiked. Over 750 miles of Washington and Oregon no blisters. I did use Fox River sock liners and Darn Tough socks as well.
I went backpacking abroad for a year before covid, and my black Moab ventilators ended up being the perfect boots. They were great on both hiking trails and street pavement, versatile in different environments, and the black ones look like street shoes when worn with jeans.
The GORTEX is great if you have to cross creeks and is warmer. Great traction on rocks and flexible for uneven terrain
I have Thru hiked a number of trails and have always hiked in the Moab Ventilaters. Comfy as soon as you put them on. Never had a blister as long as you have the correct size. Durable, even on rough terrain like the Appalachian trail I always easily get well over 500-600 miles from a pair, usually more. I do not recommend the waterproof version as they take forever to dry when they do eventually get soaked. Also I shoe goo (or similar) the front edge where the sole wraps up onto the toe as that can be a weak spot that fails from stump knocking and can start to pull away from the shoe. I enclosed a picture where I seal/glue and a picture of the thread after about 500-600 miles of hiking. The journey is the destination! ;)
After a 12 day backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, i accepted the reality that trying to keep your feet dry with waterproof boots in heavy rain and with several stream crossings was not possible. I switched to the Moab 2 Mid Ventilator and continued to rely on quality Merino wool socks. Yes, my feet will get wet, but the wool socks and my activity keeps my feet warm and these boots actually dry out much faster than any waterproof boot. I still have several pairs of gortex-lined boots, but for multi-day backpacking trips when the weather is above freezing, i really like the Moab 2 Mid Ventilators. They broke in fairly quick and are reasonably comfortable. I don't believe they would support a really heavy pack, but if you can keep you load down to ~40 lbs or less, I think these provide decent stability and good traction.
I have used Merrell boots since the very beginning, in the early 80's when the boots were made in the USA. After thousands of miles and too many boots to count I can confidently state that they have and still are the very best boots for my feet. I have worn out several pair of MOABs and just bought a new pair, probably my last due to my age and physical condition. I have never been disappointed by Merrell boots....never.
I wore a pair of Merrell"s MOAB 2 Mid Ventilators for my Pacific Crest Trail section hike in 2018. I started at Campo and ended in Tehachapi for a total of 558 miles...and my shoes performed GREAT!!! My only change to the shoes were a pair of new Superfeet insoles. What I like about these shoes is that they are more durable and last a lot LONGER than the more trendy "trail runners" that were prevalent on the PCT. These shoes get more bang for the buck than trail runners...I still had lots of tread left on my shoes as opposed to trail runners which I saw being left in hiker boxes along the trail. I love these shoes...and expect to be wearing my MOABS 2 Mid Ventilators for my next section hike of the Pacific Crest Trail!!!
Excellent quality hiking boot. Breathable enough for your feet to stay cool. Moisture drains out very nicely on damp areas. No break in needed. I hiked several miles the first day, right out of the box. Super comfortable. I have 4 pairs and they are all the same as far as quality and comfort. I highly recommend!
