Crotch wore out on all 4 pairs
At first I was sold on these for how comfy Smartwool underwear was but that has changed. I've worn all my pairs only a couple times per week and after 3-4 months this is what they look like (see picture). Smartwool, You have got to fix the durability on these. The crotch area especially. I love your products but your underwear is severely lacking. I would gladly return as a customer if you made these last at least 2-3 years. No way I'm buying these anymore for close to $50 when its only gonna last a few months. You can do it though!
Started wearing them for hiking and I was really astounded to find they were very comfortable even in the hottest and most humid conditions. So comfortable, I just wear them all the time even when not hiking. Downsides are that they do wear out faster than other fibres and are costly. They last around three to four years of use.
For those of you giving this a poor raiting or being unsatisfied, know this: conventional detergents destroy wool fibers. Wash anything with wool in plain water or woolite. I wear wool socks ever day for the Army and I never ever wash them. I put them in the dryer for a couple minutes and that's it. If I had to wash them, I'd use woolite. I have some of these underwear and they are ine. I wash them by hand in plain water, no soap.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I decided to buy a couple of pairs of boxer briefs after spending a week backpacking in the Grand Canyon. I own other Smartwool items. My Smartwool t-shirt, which I literally lived in 24/7, never smelled. My baselayers tops and bottoms never smelled. However, my nylon, quick-dry briefs started to develop a funk. I did have some hesitation about buying wool briefs. The last thing I wanted was to be backpacking in itchy wool undies. Nevertheless, I gave it a whirl and was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable they felt next to the skin and didn't feel uncomfortably warm. They will be my go-to briefs for my next adventure. #sweepstakes
These are great at first. Truly a wonderful pair of knickers. But after 6 months or so, the crotch is *always* wearing away. So that only the nylon core of the threads remains, and the wool is mostly all gone. This makes them lose all qualities in that area that make merino great. You're left with a gusset that is entirely stretch nylon. 6 months is a pathetic lifespan for any clothing, honestly. My modal underwear from That Podcast Ad Company lasts YEARS. Smartwool needs to invest in merino threads or weaves that are more durable.
Been wearing these to the office and out in the wilderness for the last few years. They wear out with use, but are comfortable and warm. The new rubber waist bands are less elastic than the old ones. Suggest trying them on before buying unless you want a tourniquet in the middle of your body.
At first I thought a little pricy but after hiking in temperatures in the 80s and also in the 20's I will never hike without them again! Keeps you cool in hot weather and warm in colder weather.
In 2018 I purchased 5 pairs for roughly $230. Within 2 years all 5 had worn through the crotch. I reached out to Smartwool in 2020 and they immediately sent me a $230 gift card which I used to buy 8 pairs of the same underwear on sale. Within 2 years all 8 had also worn through the crotch. Unfortunately I waited until just after the 2 year mark to start a warranty claim. Smartwool would only refund a portion of the total. They are the most comfortable underwear ive ever worn but they just dont last. At $40 per pair I cant recommend them unless you intend on filing warranty claims ever 24 months. Keep in mind I always washed on delicate and either line dried or dried on delicate/low.
From all of the boxer briefs I have tried these are the only ones that ride up my legs the least. I've tried Ex officio, Calvin Klein, Duluth trading company, Saxx, and a couple other brands that all bothered me. I am usually a boxer wearer but I would prefer something like this for work. These do ride up on long car drives but at least when I'm hiking and walking around a lot they don't bother me at all. they're definitely comfortable and can be worn for multiple days without too becoming smelly or crusty.
