I bought the OR Ferrosi and the Patagonia Quandary pants for a 3 week hiking trip through the Amazonas and hiking at >14,500ft in the Peruvian Andes. Out of the package, the 32 Short pants had a fit similar to a 32x30. The fabric was of good quality and the pull tabs to adjust the width of the pant leg bottom was a pleasant surprise. (Picture 1) Putting the pants through the wringer at the Tambopata research Center in the Amazon basin, brought forth a few of the short comings. The pull tabs of the zipper are puny to say the least. (Picture 2 and 3). I found my fingers searching for the pull tabs to close or open the side and back pocket zippers each time I needed to access something from the zippable pockets. And there are no tabs/extended cords on the zipper tabs. (Pictures to compare zipper tab with a Japanese 100 yen coin/American quarter). The zippable side pocket is a weird design. The way the pocket is designed, the pocket itself is towards the back of the entrance of the pocket. When I tried to put my phone in the pocket (which is conveniently placed), I had to maneuver the phone/object down and slide it back to fit into the pocket. Else gravity would throw the phone out since the pocket is not a down and slide design. The third and most glaring shortcoming, in my opinion, was that the back pockets allow sweat to bleed through and anything kept in the back pocket gets soaked with sweat (unfortunately my passport in this case).
I've traveled through Greece and climbed the east face of Mt. Whitney in these pants. Paired with an OR button down and you'll be ready for all but the fanciest restaurants. They can handle everything without looking like a technical piece of clothing. Fabric holds up to abrasive rock, and is super lightweight. Travels well! Stretchy fabric means you may want to order a size smaller than usual. Hip pockets are on the small side, and I wish the thigh pocket zipped the other way; crashing through brush tends to open the pocket by pulling the zipper down. But if we bought pants based off of pockets we'd all be running around with cargo's from the 90's.
These pants are incredibly comfortable, they breath great and are super light and wick moisture off fairly well. I used them first for travel through rainforests in Africa and they kept me cool, protected, and dry for two weeks. The materials and build quality are excellent. I'm a pretty small guy and I've found that most outdoor pants I've tried on have been too long or too baggy, these are great for skinnier guys and they have a hit or stretch to them so you don't feel confined. Pockets and belt loops are great. I didn't find a real use for the side pocket, but I'm sure it's great for smaller items. One of the best purchases I've made for outdoor gear!
Super light, stylish tighter cut but still very comfortable. Good alone on warm winter days and great over tights for xc skiing (love the sneaky drawstring) to cut wind (partially) and shed snow. Dried very fast when ice climbing in wet conditions. Can't wait to use them in summer given how light they are. I've only had the pants a couple months so hard to speak to long term durability. They dealt with a crampon snag surprisingly well - just small holes and no tear. But they have started to pill a bit on the thigh so for that I gotta take off one star and unfortunately I will soon have to demote them from 'fancy' pant status.
OR makes the best fitting pants out of any company I've tried. (and I've tried a bunch of companies) The Ferrosi pants are great for warmer endeavors but work for slightly colder days as well. On the hot days, they breathe like you are almost wearing shorts. I have worn these pants on everything from desert towers, to crag sessions at the local crags (Durango area) and Many days in the mountains spring through fall. I Love these pants!!! The only issue I have seen was a rear pocket getting a hole (after a year of use) and OR had a replacement sent before the we could even send the busted pants to them! So, OR's customer service is awesome as well. Bill Grasse
I've had these pants for a few weeks now and they've quickly become my go-to pants for everything active. I've been winter jogging, cross-country skiing, snowshowing, winter cycling, yoga-ing, and generally hanging out in these pants. It's winter so my testing so far has been winter-activity oriented. They fit well over long undies, and under a shell pant. Very stretchy. Thick enough to not feel delicate. Good pocket placement and I like the side zip pocket for keys and such. Big deep pockets that fit my big phone well, and don't lose change when napping on the couch. They will be great camping and paddling come summer time.
I don't think I've worn a better feeling pair of pants. These pants are made from a thin, soft-touch material with enough stretch that they feel completely non-binding and weightless. Being a cyclist with thick thighs, I often have trouble finding pants with enough room around the upper leg and glutes while maintaining a trim fit around the waist. These pants offer both room for movement with a waist that is still form fitting. To date, Patagonia pants have been the best fit for me, but based on this experience with the Ferrosi pant, I will definitely consider Outdoor Research for future pants and shorts purchases.
Fit varies across all manufacturers, but overall, I typically wear a 33" waist/ 34" inseam pants. The 34 long variety of this pant fits perfectly with a belt. Great weighted and selected fabric to climb splitter cracks in the creek in October and April, and long haul alpine rock days in the Sierra summer. On the approach or high efforts, a little sweat is expected, and the pants dry quickly or can be rolled up briefly. roll down the cuff and the cool breeze at belays aren't a problem and the stretch is ideal for flexibility when negotiating rock moves. If the front pockets had zippers the pant would be even better.
I just wore these guiding a 21 day June trip in the Bob Marshall. These were just what I was looking for. I wanted a pant that didn't look like I was wearing some kind of parachute pant when I put gaiters on and that were more slimming in the legs and these were just that. I'm not quite sure what kind of belt someone would wear with these because they will support wearing a very wide one. I got the 30s and am a 30+ inseam and they fit great. I wore these with the Cascadia Gaters and I noticed there was some wear occurring on the shin area from the gaiter so I wouldn't want to do that with them all the time. They repelled water well and dried quick after stream crossings.
These are an excellent pant. I used them as my only pant on a long canyon backpack trip in Moab. The pants are extremely lightweight and breathable. The fabric is durable and mosquitos can't seem to puncture it. The pockets are extremely well placed to work with a harness or hip belt. I comfortably fit both a small smartphone and a quad map in the side pocket. Drawcords at ankles were great for minimizing dirt/sand in shoes and for keeping my pants up when needed. I did not seem to put any serious wear on the pants despite a lot of abrasion. The downside is that these pants seem to stretch a bit. So, I would size them small if you plan on using them for a while w/o washing.
