I Recently replaced my old pair of Vios lux GTX with the newer GTX rr model. My old pair has always been hands down the most comfortable hiking Boot I’ve ever owned. My new pair is no exception. After about 30 hard trail miles and a good break in period, they feel and hug my feet just like my old pair. I especially like the added toe rand and leather uppers of the GTX rr even though they are just slightly heavier then the original model. Also the waxed brick color was a big plus for me. I’m a avid year round hiker from Golden Colorado, And look forward to many years and adventures with my new favorite friends
I’m an outdoorsman. I need quality products that will perform well for the experience. I have had several different Brands of Hiking Boots over the years. I really have to say that right out of the box these particular Boots fit like a glove. Matter of fact I do not see any so to call break-in time with these Boots. It is like put them on, lace them up and Go! Whether it be standing on concrete in my shop for the better part of a day or hiking or backpacking in the mountains the boots perform. I wear these boots all day everyday. I never have experienced any negative issues with my feet. Overall an Outstanding product, no Doubt!
I purchased these after wearing out a pair of boots made by Vasque called the St. Elias in about 5 years, I wrote a review on their website. The fit on these out of the box was stiff. There wasn’t too much immediate comfort unlike the St. Elias by Vasque. With that though they felt incredibly tough, durable, and well made. The attention to detail on the stitching and leather work was incredible. Even though they were stiff they broke in fairly quickly, and usually stiffness has directly correlated to how long the leather lasted in my personal experience. They breathe well. Keep my feet dry even when fully submerged. The leather is easy to treat and Zamberlan sells the Hydrobloc treatment which is the same it was treated with at the factory to help keep the leather supple and waterproof. Grippy tread does well on rocks, wet rocks, mud, wet trees, and most other terrains I’ve thrown at them. Slips on ice, which is to be expected. Overall great boot that I would absolutely purchase again. I’m considering buying their Norwegian welted boot they make as well.
I've owned a pair of these boots in the past which is why I was willing to pay so much for the boots. They are solid, in fact so solid they are pretty tough to break in. That said, once you get them broken in they feel great. After hours/days of working to break them in, I wore them on a trip to Yellowstone. A buddy had the same boots. He showed me where his soles were breaking off in chunks. I looked at mine and the exact same was happening. REI was terrific to work with on the return, but it was disappointing to put so much work in to break in these boots... only to have them begin falling apart. The tread wasn't worn at all, the rubber just began snapping off on the corners :/
I really like my 996 Vioz GTX's. They have been an outstanding hunting boot that I have finally just wore the tread off of them (lasting longer than any other hunting boot I've used). I had seen that the 1996's are an upgraded version of the 996. They defiantly are... the uppers are a much better system with a better constructed system at the bottom of the laces. The rubber toe will be a big help in the rocky high country. Same great comfort despite being very stiff. Break in will take a little while but well worth it. Very happy with purchase.
I have a completely different need for this boot. I have really bad ankles, bad knees and very flat feet, and seem to be very prone to rolling my ankle's which I have done many times before wearing a supportive shoe. I wear this boot everywhere, every day. I work out in this shoe (Power walking). I average about 680 miles a year just in work out miles, not counting any mileage that's not work out mileage. I have found that you get what you pay for in this shoe. This boot has paid for it self many times over if you count how much pay I would have lost due to foot and ankle injury's from not having great support. It almost reminds me of a ski boot as far as support goes. I have to replace the boots every year due to walking on hard surfaces all the time. The only bad thing I can say about this boot is it's not a good shoe to wear if you do a lot of standing in one place. It will make your back hurt when you do this. However your feet do stay warm and dry no matter what the weather is(Cold and/or wet). I have been wearing Zamberlan boots for about nine years following this routine and have had nothing but great success with them. I have had to upgrade to different model boot when they discontinued a model I was wearing. I will continue to wear this shoe and will recommend them to anyone who needs a great working boot.
I'm surprised at the reviews for my boots. I have been wearing them for three years and find them supportive and isolating (from trail impacts) to the point of luxurious. All boots need to fit properly, of course, and these boots fit me in the normal size I usually take. I also generally add superfeet insoles to my boots, which I did with this pair, and found they are comfortable for long hikes, can be waterproofed by whatever means (I used some pine-sap mixture from ID), and seemingly will wear forever. They are heavy for day hiking (although I wear them anyway), and offer plenty of support for heavy backpacking. I bought them 'cuz I thought they looked cool, but I wear them because they are the grippiest, most comfortable and supportive boots I own.
This was a great boot. I really wanted to keep it. I walked around for about 4 weeks, it felt GREAT! Except. My right boot 'never' really set in. My heal constantly kept slipping out/up. And not just a little, but, for me, enough to where I brought the boot back to REI. I even went back last week and had the footwear department guys help me out; different insole, different lacing, etc. But it still slipped out too much. I've read a 'few' comments that this happens with Zamberlan footwear. I even tried a different style of Zamberlan boot, and my 'right' heal still slipped out. But not in other manufacturer's boots, just Zamberlan. Really to bad as I really liked this boot. Thank you for your time.
I loved my Salewa ALP Trainers for short trips and light loads. I wanted a longer lasting boot for backpacking. I was skeptical getting heavier boots for backpacking trip. These boots are amazing. I ordered 1 side up for room and swelling. Very supportive for heavy backpacking loads. They have excellent grip for steep descents. This was recommended by REI chat team and they did a great job recommending these boots. I am very happy with the Zamberlan Viol Lux. As always, REI was spot on with the recommendation.
After years of wearing "modern" lightweight hiking boots, I found myself thinking wistfully about the heavy-weight boots of my younger years. I found hiking on rocky trails to be extremely uncomfortable, and fatiguing; I could feel every rock through the soles of my boots. After reading some reviews of hiking/backpacking boots, I decided to spring for the Zamberlans. I'm very glad I did. They are insanely comfortable; the leather lining is glove-soft. They fit my feet perfectly--I have narrow heels--and I've found that they need no real breaking-in. They are heavy, but not uncomfortably so. The weight is definitely offset by the ease of walking, due to the stiffness of the sole and the fact that it's a rocker sole. So far I can't think of any negatives. Oh sure, they're Gore-Tex, so they'll probably be a little warm in the heat; but that's not a negative "feature" of this boot. That's just the way Gore-Tex is. If you get Gore-Tex boots thinking they'll be uber-ventilated, well, that's on you.
