With more square footage than one Big Agnes staffer's Steamboat apartment, the Flying Diamond 6 tent is much more than a standard family tent. It's made for basecamp and more.

This tent and this company are awesome. I use it twice a year for the last 6 years for "Mancation". We go in the Fall and in the Spring, shoot guns, chop wood, cook, and drink beer. I wanted a tent that could hold up to super wet weather, and windy driving snow. We have camped in 5" of rain over a weekend, and this tent has held up to 11 degrees with a foot of snow. With a Little Buddy heater, you can hold 3 guys and all the gear at 45 degrees inside easy. Just break the ice off the tent to get out in the morning. One year the dog ripped the screen on the door, and I thought I was done. BA told me to cover shipping it to Colorado, and they would fix and return at no cost. They did exactly that, what a freaking awesome company!! This thing is still going strong today, and has been battle tested out in the muck!! These people that claim zipper problems must be wrong. My zipper have lasted many a late night intoxicated bathroom trips!
I've had this tent for several years and, like others, have had issues with the zipper on what is otherwise a very good tent. Big Agnes, being the great company that they are, decided to send me a brand new tent free of charge in light of all the problems i have had with the zipper. The tent has a new design with a much better zipper, amoungst other improvements. While i just got the new tent, and have only had a chance to test it in the back yard, I am confident i won't have the same issues i had with old zipper. Aside from the zipper, the tent has been great, stands up well to the wind, doesn't leak, and the kids love the extra room.
I bought this tent 7 years ago for my beginning family. The best attribute of this tent is it's adaptability. It's been through the wringer several times with very challenging weather. Mostly high winds, and overnight downpours, with one really rough thunderstorm that locked us in the tent for a few days. Let me say now I'm a big fat wuss. I wake up at every sound my kids make, check on them 2-4 times a night, and generally a big ball of nerves if there's a lot of creature noises. All I can say is I slept through it all and knew my family was safe. You can't get higher praise from me. PROS The expedition style pole crossings really handle a beating on axis. Off-axis is a different story, make sure you are guying out in high winds, but most of the time it isn't necessary. Only time I felt it was lacking was in 55+ mph Anza Borrego winds. Make sure you have tent stakes that can handle your ground conditions. On a related note this is not a tall tent, that's great when it's windy, but can be annoying if you expected a car camping cabin. I'm 6'2" and it was just perfect for me to sleep in and get dressed. (Standing stretching and yoga are outside activities). The 6 windows in the rain fly help a lot for moisture control. Mesa Verde NP had a really bad thunderstorm roll through and without the extra ventilation I don't know if we could have stayed dry. Last on my list is the door/wall/divider inside the tent. We used this alot! Sometimes for privacy, but most times when it was early or late season the family would sleep in only the 4 person portion of the tent to save heat. All our gear went in the 2 person side. And in the vestable I would use a non-recommended heating element either in the middle of the night, or to make coffee in the morning. CONS The isn't any privacy without the rain fly. So in super hot weather we would have to toss it on to change in the morning and night, and off during the day and at night. The main door zipper blew on us after 5 years. Not acceptable for a tent at this level. So we sent it back. BA replaced the zipper for free! Worked great for another year. Then started having issues again in the bottom right corner. We nursed it for another year and now at 7 years old I think this is an acceptable life (considering the amount of camping we do). I want to remove a star but considering the amount of camping we did, and the extremes we took it, I have to say I still think this is a great value. Conclusion So now I have to get another tent. 7 years ago this was the best choice. But now the competition has gotten better. If I still needed a 6 person size I would likely buy this again. But with a 6 and 8 year old daughters that want their own tent, I will likely get 2x REI Basecamp 4s.
We got this tent for car camping with two humans and two dogs. It is great! We found it super roomie in comparison to other 6-person tents and love that we know it will hold up to the elements. This tent also stood up to some crazy 30mph winds like a champ on one of our trips. At one point we had 8 people in the tent playing card games and it still didn't feel cramped. We've had this tent for a couple of seasons now and super happy.
When we were looking for a family tent that was affordable and could be used all year, the selections were limited. Finally, we found the Big Agnes Flying Diamond. My husband wanted me to go camping but I told him only if I was comfortable. This tent is roomy and cozy. I love the pockets and multiple convenient loops to hang lamps. There is ample space for my daughter when she joins us. This tent has made me a believer in the comforts of tent camping.
This tent has seen a lot of action - in particular wind and rain. Always dry! It's huge inside and fits a pack n play no problem and has lots of room for gear and kiddos to play if it's gross outside. Highly recommend this brand - our only challenge in some parks is that it is a big tent so it doesn't always fit on the tent pad as easily. In 30 or so camping trips we've only had an issue one time with that.
Our 2nd Flying Diamond 6 tent. Zippers are so cheap and bad, they failed quickly. We got this Big Agnus tent when the zippers gave out after nearly 30 years on our Kelly tents (2). Big Agnus needs to learn that Cheap is the new Expensive. Go YKK Zippers or go home.
In late July, me and my four boys went backpacking up to the Crestones in Colorado. We took our new Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 person tent in backpacks by splitting the tent up into several different parts. At 19 lbs, the tent is somewhat heavy but between the five of us, each pack had less than 4 lbs of tent weight. So that's not bad at all. After packing in 2 1/2 miles, we set the tent up at 12,060 feet, just below the face of Crestone Needle, a 14er. Setting up the tent was a bit complicated especially since a thunderstorm was bearing down on us. Out of necessity, we had the tent up in less than 10 minutes. The poles are color coded for the tent so that helped. The large size of the tent made for a fun time with me and the four boys since we were all together. We made many memories that would not have been possible if we were in two separate tents. The tent design is really impressive and the craftsmanship is top notch. We were camped below Crestone Needle for just over four days. In that time, we experienced three thunderstorms, two rainstorms, a windstorm with 30 to 40 mph gusts and a pounding hailstorm with up to quarter-size hail that lasted 30 minutes. The tent did great! The flying diamond handled the various types of bad weather with no problem. When the bad weather was raging outside, the tent was a safe haven of comfort. The velcro fly-tent attachments and guylines made the tent unshakable in strong wind gusts. When we got a barrage of hail that lasted a half hour, the tent did fine with no issues at all, even with a load of hail on top and drifting hail around the tent. The Flying Diamond 6 person tent sells for about the same as many four season tents half its size. By my evaluation, the Flying Diamond 6 person tent is the best value among the four season tents. Also, the overall design is well thought out and would rival many Everest basecamp tents. The Flying Diamond 6 person tent is the best tent I've ever owned by far.
We've had this tent for about 2 years, and have used it for 3 trips (1 night, 1 night, 2 nights.) The zipper on the front door has already failed (no longer zips), and the peg end of one of the tent poles has come off. The tent is just poor quality -- the rainfly got a hole the first time we put it up (I am a pretty experienced camper and take good care of my stuff), the included stakes are laughable, and the design is mediocre. We had low-moderate winds on our last trip and even with guylines properly set up, the tent was rattling around like it was in a wind tunnel. The interior pockets are not deep enough to keep larger objects from tipping out. In contrast, I have a Mountain Hardware 3-person tent that is 10 years old and has been all over the world with me (including backcountry Iceland) with no issues despite some pretty harsh treatment. It takes a lot to compel me to leave a review, but this tent pushed me there. Do not buy.
owned this tent for 3-4 years now and have camped in it probally a total of 50 nights. some rain/wind(40mph) and never once had a problem.it has held up great. my biggest gripe which is a minor one is be careful when picking a site with a tent pad as tent is big and sometimes will overhang on smaller tent pads.
