I bought these for a trip to Colorado in March and love them. I stayed warm wearing these under my snow pants, even while dog sledding in -20 wind chill. I wore them while hiking and snowboarding as well. I am 5' 2" and 110 pounds and the x small are comfortable - not skin tight. They are not itchy.
I loved my previous base layer smart wool bottoms. However the new version as a wide waistband that rolls up and is not comfortable. I also found it to be too tight as other reviewers have commented.
I have long been a fan of everything Smartwool 150, ever since I learned I could get away with wearing one item of Smartwool clothing on repeat for days without it getting particularly dirty, smelly or sweaty. But on a recent camping trip, Smartwool's 150 base layer bottoms really went above and beyond for me. I had been wearing them for days as a base layer underneath leggings and denim pants, where they kept me warm and did their moisture wicking thing, until one particularly windy night when they literally saved me: I was at a Burning Man event, testing substances as part of a harm reduction camp, when the wind picked up and blew some of a corrosive, chemical reagent liquid on my pants. The reagent, which again, is super toxic and corrosive, immediately burned a hole through my pants and burned a hole through my leggings underneath—but not the Smartwool! The Smartwool 150 baselayer held up perfectly, incurred no damage and protected me completely from potentially getting a chemical burn on my leg. Thanks, Smartwool! Great for hikers, great for burners, great for people who don't want to change their clothes. I also wear them to the office and to commute in the winter and spring because they're so lightweight and easy to fit under pants.
Purchsed in the summer during a sale, so I ahve only tried on and worn around the house. They are a little scratchy, but might soften up a little witha wash or two. Perhaps wish they had a little more stretch in the seat. Bottom line - they'll be a good layer that I got for a great price, but I probably wouldn't purchase these again.
I love this base layer. I live in Northern CA in a climate that is cool almost all year round, and the Smartwool Base Layer keeps the chill away. Also, the knit is a good one. I've been wearing them now for at least a month and almost every day, and amazingly enough, they look almost as new as the day I bought them.
These fit well, have a nice fabric feel, and slide nicely under jeans without that fabric-on-fabric friction some "wooly" undies have. Wide band fits well and I don't think the flat inseam seams will be a problem. This is my first pair of Smartwool bottoms, so I have no insight to how the waist used to fit before.
Functionally, these are fine, but they are sheer, so don't wear them just as leggings unless you're ok with your underwear showing through.
I wore this as a base layer during a snowboarding excursion, and winter hiking in the Canadian Rockies. The temperature ranged between -9 and 5 degree celsius, and I stayed comfortable the entire time. For snowboarding where we encountered the colder temps, I wore this with only a waterproof snow pant over it and stayed warm all day every day. I got a little warm in them when hiking in the higher temps, but taking off the outer pant layer kept me comfortable. I would highly recommend this base layer!!
It finally happened - I had to replace my beloved smartwool 150 merino bottoms after nearly 8 years. Given the quality of the brand I didn't even consider another option and I'm happy to say I haven't been disappointed! These are a great update to the older models. I really like the wider waistband as it stays up well under snowpants. These will keep you warm while not inhibiting motion - so a definite winner for winter snow sports!
I like that these fit tight but not uncomfortabley. I also love the weight they are perfect for hiking, working outside without getting too warm. The only thing I don't like is they ride low on the waist, so low theat when I bend down I need to hike them back up constantly. If the waist band was a bit higher they would be perfect, but such a pain to constantly hike them back up.
