insecure, not good for mountain bikes
This rack seems well built but the design is faulty for mountain bikes. The hooks that go over the front tire and hold the bike to the rack actually hit the brake hoses and little plastic hose retaining clip that is on our mountain bike forks (both bikes!). It's not a secure way to attach the bike, and maybe it will damage the clip or hose if too much pressure is applied. The instructions say to put the arm as close to the fork as possible. If we pull it away a bit to avoid the brake hose then the bike wobbles and feels extremely insecure. In addition, the manual says if your tires are bigger than 2.3" wide you have to use an extra janky/cheap/nonintegrated front tire strap (basically a cheap velcro strap that isn't attached the rack like the rear strap). It makes it very inconvenient. Finally, it's not a good rack if you have truck canopy or an SUV with a steep rear window. Bikes with wide handlebars hit the rear window. I have to put our narrowest bar bike towards the front and I use a tennis ball on the grip to protect the window. Really not happy with this rack, I would pass for sure.
Great product, poor instructions
My wife did a lot of research and found this Kuat Sherpa at REI. I was leaning more towards a Thule. As I read more & more about it & read the reviews I started leaning towards the Sherpa. The deciding factor was the return policy for REI members. All the comments about the bad instructions are true, our didn’t even come with instructions! That being said, we downloaded the instructions on the laptop & watched several videos. It wasn’t that hard but the Kuat company video was not good. Watching several of them we got a good idea of how to do it & it went well. Now that it is on & we have used it several times we love it. I would definitely recommend it.
Great Packaging, Great Bike Rack
Whatever you do...read the instructions first (I failed to do this). The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Hitch Rack is an absolute game-changer! From the moment I opened the box, I was blown away by its innovative packaging, which ingeniously doubles as a helpful assembly aid. Putting it together was a breeze, thanks to the intuitive design and clear instructions. But what truly sets the Sherpa 2.0 apart is its unbeatable features. With its sleek, lightweight design and sturdy construction, it effortlessly outshines my previous bike racks. For once, the closing loop is on the outside of the rack so it is easy to feed shut. The thoughtful designs of the integrated cable locks and two-way foot assist make loading and unloading bikes a total breeze. Trust me, you won't find a better bike rack out there!
Excellent bike rack
This bike rack is excellent! It’s very light which makes it so easy to get on and off my Subaru Forester. It was easy to install and has been working great for our road bikes, even my full suspension bike with 29” tires. I love how it folds up when not in use and my bikes seem very secure as I drive.
First Bike Rack Ever and It's Been Perfect
This is my first bike rack so I don't have anything to really compare it to but it has been pretty much a perfect experience. I was choosing between a Thule rack and this Kuat Sherpa 2.0 but the large volume of great reviews set me over for the Kuat. It fits perfectly onto my Draw Tite hitch (1.25") receiver on my 2019 Infiniti Q50. There is a knob to tighten down the slack and it stayed tight through several days of usage. I have jumped on the interstate here in DFW with 1 to 2 bikes multiple times. Specifically, the bikes are a medium Trek Marlin 6 and a small Trek Marlin 5. Seems to hold up very well. I typically use the extra velcro strap for the front wheel even though the manual says the ratcheting arm for the fork should suffice. Both cradles and the rear strap are very durable. The bike sits somewhat at an upward angle and it seems somewhat sketchy at first. It looks like the bike is "hanging off" a little bit but after actually using the rack, I feel very confident in it. This design definitely helps to keep a slimmer profile. Some pointers for other people that I had to learn myself.. a standard hitch pin (1/2" hitch pin that typically fits 1.25" hitch receivers" doesn't fit through the rack when it use. It comes with a small hitch pin that doesn't seem like it's enough at first but it surprisingly is. I just make sure to push in the rack after inserting the pin and then tighten the knob. Also make sure that you have your hitch pin lock secure on the pin. After that you should be good to go. The foot pedal to tilt the rack work amazingly well so that you can still access the trunk. It is very sturdy and offers a audible and tactile click between all three modes. Aesthetically, I think the rack looks absolutely amazing with my gray Infiniti. I have not yet used the cable lock so I can't comment on that but so far this has been a great experience and I couldn't ask for more. - Lil Rice Muncher Gaming YT
Not CHEAP, but WORTH every penny
Needed a lightweight and cosmetically appealing bike rack that can carry 2 bikes on my new Toyota 4Runner. The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 seemed to meet my expectations, but came with a price margin on the higher side. After unboxing, assembly and first use I was so happy to have made this purchase. It’s worth every penny and was so simple to assemble and use. It literally took longer to air up my two bikes than it did for assembly and loading up the bikes. Unloading was even easier! Got our first compliment the first day we took it out for use. I was so impressed with this company I went online and got the Kuat dock for storage. If you’re thinking about getting this bike rack, JUST DO IT! You won’t regret it.
High Quality Platform Rack
Well built and light weight platform rack. Easy to assemble and install. Bikes are stable on the back of my Jeep Wrangler even with all its bumps and shakes. I needed the Kuat Hi-Lo extension which allows the gate to swing open completely when the rack is tilted down, but not when the bikes are on it. I still get plenty of access with bikes on it. only drawback is that minor cosmetic damage occurred when assembling the rack. I read that people were over-tightening the through bolts, so I used a torque wrench set a 15ft/lbs as instructed. When tightening, a minor imprint in the bolt plate and a minor discoloration appeared in the outside platform, before the wrench clicked. the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars. It’s a bike rack and I’m a mountain biker, so it’s going to get beat up, so the cosmetic issues don’t overshadow this fantastic rack.
Relatively Pricey, Completely Worth It
In comparing this to other racks, it was pricer than some of the others that would do basically the same job, but just not quite as well. It's design and light weight makes it nice and easy to take on and off my vehicle. Hardware is high quality and assembly was easy as can be - even comes with the tools needed. It's held my Trek rock solid and see no reason why it won't hold two with ease. The tilt-down feature is a amazing, allows you to get gear or daily junk in and out of an SUV with ease and no bike removal. The ball-wedge keeps it solidly in the receiver. It's also (in my opinion) the best-looking options out there, which was fairly important.
Works good but one key issue
The Sherpa is a great, lightweight, easy to assemble and easy to install rack. I was disappointed the white color is now a pearl color which is more like a shiny-off-white color, which is why I bought the black one for my white Jeep. It looks great. I previously owned an older Kuat rack in white that matched my car perfectly, but someone backed into it and ruined it. This new version seems to be lighter weight, which is nice for taking on and off for the change of season. It works very well and seems very durable and sturdy. I would have given 5 stars, but every time I have to use the key to unlock the hitch pin to remove the rack, it requires a lot of fussing to get the key to work. Just about the time I'm ready to give up, it finally works, but it almost seems like it's the wrong key. It should not require so much fight to get it to work.
Sturdy bike rack
Two bikes fit on this secure. Some reviews said they had bikes fall off. I have made multiple trips from Flagstaff to Phoenix and on dirt roads and have not had any issues. Best part is the knob that tightens the hitch insert to reduce movement of the entire rack. Pics show with ratchet strap for first trip. Haven't used the strap since. Other post also say it's hard to assemble... not true. The box it comes in is used as a jig to hold it in place to put it together.
