My wife bought me this bike for my birthday (because I have the most awesome wife around) and it's a fantastic ride. The gearing is spaced right, and can still support an easy cruise at 15 mph on pavement. While the Deore line isn't cutting edge, it is more than capable. The disks have a nice linear pull, and good feedback. Riding position is nice and upright, which my back is happier with and also facilitates a good look around on trails. I'll be putting a rando rack and bag on it, as well as proper pedals, for longer gravel rides in the near future.
Solid bike
My fellow and I both grabbed this model, he a large, and me, a medium. Swapped the stock tires for 35 mm schwalbes, but that’s the only stock part we changed. After over 7000 km through the hills and valleys Ethiopia and East Africa, this bike is still rolling. We did not take it easy on these bikes, focusing on any unpaved backroad/Trail we could find. No complaints, but I have mixed feelings on the handle bars, specifically the shifters placement. They were a little exposed for cycle touring and prone to damage due to how they “stuck out”. AND Though they never did, it felt like my hands could slip off the lower bars at any moment. Overall, great bike for a good price.
Nike bike
Very comfortable bike to ride. I have had no issues with it so far. I ride this bicycle about 3 miles to work and to do my errands around town on a daily basis. I live by the beach and go for longer cruises on the weekend with it. I added Cascadia ALX fenders, a topeak rack, crank brothers pedals and a few other accessories in hopes of taking this bicycle on a tour during summer break.
Great Bike- Poor assembly- wrong parts
I bought the ADV 3.1 this week from the Arcadia, CA store while traveling for work. (well researched impulse buy) it's a really great bike and the people who helped me were awesome. I got it home and rode it around the neighborhood a bit and loved it. BUT when i went to adjust the seat- the seat clamp bolt was stripped, no matter, I'm sure I have one. So I looked at the seat post clamp and it's the wrong one! somehow in assembly, the mechanic must have grabbed the wrong clamp. it does not fit right the clamp says 34 on it and it's a 31.8 seat tube. Then I was looking at the bar-end shifter and whoever put the bike together totally stripped out the bolt head that goes through the shifter... total bummer. I'm happy with the bike otherwise! Word to the wise, Check every component, make sure no bolts are stripped and that everything works as it should! I'm travelling for the next month so I can't just take it back right now :/ - oh and what people have said about poor paint quality is true but i don't need my bike to be super pretty ;)
Four Days In
I went into REI looking for some sandals, came out with a new bike. I"m 6'4" and the Extra Large was on display and on sale. The color and handle bars caught my eye, so I had to take a test ride. I wasn't looking for a new bike, but the test ride sold me. The higher handlebar height and wider tires made the ride fit me like a glove. I'm not 100% sold on the flared handle bars, but I have yet to take it out on gravel roads or single track rides. I'm willing to give it some time to see if they grow on me. My only complaint is that I love the Mazama name and wished they have kept that name for the bike. Hoping to love the this bike years down the road. Have fun out there.
Good, but not excellent value
This is a good bike overall. At full price I might have gone for another "adventure" bike like the Vaya or the Crosscheck. But discounts, or rebates, add up. Good design and selection of components. Really like the handlebar height. It's hard to find a stock bike with the steerer tube at a sensible length. The design of the bars... meh. I like the tire size and also the abundant braze-ons, and clearance. The steel frame is nice, as is the saddle. Now for the bad bits. The paint quality is awful. Just awful. It flakes and chips with the merest scrape. It seems like REI just powdered instead of powder*coat*ed. Hard to install a kickstand. I'm also suspect of the generic wheels, since at this price point I would expect Mavic hoops at the least. These wheels weren't tensioned properly at the shop but that's to be expected. Overall, good bike. 8/10.
A sweet ride, both on and off road.
I got my Mazama (previous generation of this before the re-branding) in late 2016. It is great fun and does everything I want. It doubles as my commuter (rack, panniers, and fenders added) and as a trail bike ("roads? where we're going, we don't need roads!"). It is no modern mountain bike (anywhere a suspension and dropper post are a must is going to lead to some hike-a-bike adventuring) but for your common open space trails and fire roads it handles like a dream, including double digit grades. Very stable, excellent gearing. I added a rack, full metal fenders, and wider & lighter 44mm tires (I use 38s when my fenders are on). My only word of caution: Try out the handlebars and see if they work for you. Alternating my time between this and a road bike I find their outward flair to be a bit much so that riding in the drops is the norm as riding on the hoods is a bit narrow for my broad shoulders. I've gotten used to it (the drops are high enough up so this feels natural), but that is the first major component swap I'll consider.
Wobbles when loaded
I bought this bike for around town (roads), paved and gravel trails, and with the intent to take it touring. Sales people indicated it was capable of carrying panniers; pictures show same. I liked everything about the bike until I loaded it with 50 lbs. (total) of weight distributed between rear and front panniers. Then it wobbled like a noodle - frame is too light. I weigh 170 lbs; total weight of 250 lbs. including bike, me, and load was too much for it. At 20+ mph it repeatedly developed a speed wobble. Was very disappointed as I expressly indicated I wanted to tour with it to sales personnel before buying it.
Redefining what a bike can do
This bike is awesome. Trail riding, touring, pavement. You will find yourself happy with this purchase. Just completed a 100 mile tour from Califon NJ -> frenchtown, NJ -> Collegeville, PA -> Norristown, PA -> Center City, PA. Started off at 9 pm oct 5th, pouring rain. Not a single issue with the wet roots, overgrown single-track, loose rocks, or mud. Friday october 6th, Delaware canal - this thing hauls weight like a pro. Saturday october 7th, Norristown -> Philly - maneuver potholes and rocks with ease, With the plethora of water bottle mounts and rack/fender mounts, you can easily mount 5 water bottles (2 on the fork) and three in the main frame. the up-right posture makes long hours on this bike seem like minutes. The only negative this bike has is the width of the handlebars. You can get it on a train sure, but good luck getting it down the isles without hitting every other seat. Doorways can be an issue, this thing takes up space. Can easily fit in small cars though (BMW 3 series, hyundai sonata, Prius) Can fit in the trunk of a Subaru outback 2012 and later with both wheels on and handlebar bag + seat-post bag fully loaded. The frame is solid, the gearing makes hills seem like flats, and the flared handlebars make controlled climbs under load a breeze. I will be upgrading the wheels to tubeless and throw some schwalbe's on as well, hopefully install a dynamo hub for power independence. TL:DR buy this bike, go where you didnt think you could go with all the gear you could want. Turn heads and make people jealous. Easily achieve an average of 10 mph on long rides with loads, no sorenesss. Stock components including saddle are more than adequate for long rides. Would recommend upgrading to MTB pedals, I have Shimano SPD's and they compliment the ride wonderfully.
Handles any road thrown at it.
This is a great bike for going out to explore. It is fast enough on pavement to keep close to my normal pace but when the road turns to gravel the bike really starts to shine. The large tires provide plenty of traction and stability to allow me to ride with confidence. The gearing is great with plenty of low gears for steep hills. The shifting is smooth and the controls feel precise. The disc brakes seem quite powerful. This bike really ticked all the boxes on features and allows me to ride much different places than my normal road bike which has opened up a lot of new rides for me. I highly recommend taking one of these for a test drive. The handle bars do flare a lot and take some getting used to. The wide flare of the bars also makes moving the bike around in tight spaces a bit difficult such as bringing it in the house through the doorway.
