Great road and gravel bike!
This looks like the Novara Safari. I bought mine last year and have riden it almost exclusively. The 48mm wide tires float nicely through loose dirt and gravel yet roll great on the road. I felt a bit stretched out on the bars, so I turned them over and now my position is perfect. I added a front rack and plan on touring rails trails this summer. This is a great rough road, gravel grinder and is now my all around bike.
Just finished 1800+ miles of the Trans America Rou
I bought the bike in Feb. to ride the Trans America Trail. The bike was great. The only tweaks I made was to change the tires to Conti 700X37. Did add a Surly front rack. Did have to make several stops to adjust the stretched brake and derailler cables. Liked the numerous hand positions of the butterfly handlebars.
!st touring bike
I spent time looking at Salsa, Surley, Trek, etc. I decided to save a little money go with this bike sight unseen. So far so good. So far just commuting to work and doing a little extra going home. So far love the bike and fits very well for me 5'8" with medium size. Planning a week long Katy trail trip in june and cross country ride summer of 2018. Looking forward to some extended trips with this bike.
So far, pretty good
I have just recently got this bike, and have only done about 25 miles. Overall I like the bike so far. I don't love the angle on one part of the handlebars. They are fine handlebars I think but not quite ideal for me. I wish the ends where they attach the brakes were angled forward a little more. I am replacing the tires right away. These tires have way too much rolling resistance, and are not all that tough and really won't handle well off pavement anyway. REI should have gone for one of the Schwalbe Marathont tires. I'm getting the mondial 40 mm. 48 mm seems rather huge, I would never go over 40. Everything else seems to be good, and I find the geometry to be comfortable. I am 5'11" and have the large bike. I don't expect a bike I buy pre-built like this to be perfect in every regard. I am happy with the purchase. It would also be real nice if REI stores would order the bike in so I could try it on. I was told that they won't. No one serious will want to buy a bike without trying it out. Seems to me that the best I could was order it and then try it out, if I don't like the feel then I can take advantage of REIs awesome return policy. I told this to the online help person, and she agreed that was the best way I could handle it. It would also be nice if REI were willing to swap out part like a normal bike shop. I Shouldn't have to buy a bike with tires I don't like and then replace them myself.
Co-op ADV 2.1 (Safari bike)
Did REI discontinue this classic forever? I hope they bring it back, with beefier tubes and a higher stem for the handlebars. This is the only touring bike I can think of that comes with 48mm tires and very comfortable butterfly handlebars. This bike can go anywhere. Its wheel base is long, and its weight limit is low (250 lbs including rider) so it's not for behemoth specimens of the human race, but it has classic good looks.
Smooth Ride
Loving my ADV, The larger tires roll very smoothly & make the ride comfortable. I’v added Planet Bike Black Cascadia 29er Fenders & A Surly front rack, witch both bolt up nicely. My peddle choice was, Shimano XT PD-M8000 XC Pedals paired with Giro Rumble VR Bike Men’s shoes. The butter fly handle bars offer allot of hand positions witch makes my rides more enjoyable. I’m using my ADV for running errands & long rides. The saddle is very comfortable so I only put on my cycling shorts for the longer rides. For around town I mounted a Niterider Lumina Oled 1100 BOOST front head lite & a NiteRider Sentinel 150 Rear Bike Light. Both offer day time visibility. The rear rack is sturdy & useful. I used a NiteRider Rack Taillight mount for my rear lite. You'll haft to take off the provided rear rack reflector to mount it. I choose to mount a Blackburn Outpost Cargo Bottle Cage paired with a AVEX FreeFlow Stainless-Steel Vacuum Water Bottle - 40 fl. oz. I love bring really cold water with me on my rides. Last, front & rear disk breaks have great stoping power & do so quietly.
