Awesome backcountry shell
Upgraded my shells to Arc'teryx a few years ago and this Rush Jacket is my year round go to for weather protection. I use it split-board mountaineering and snowmobiling and as a rain shell in the summer. It has held up to several YEARS of abuse already. I am so impressed. I just wash it as instructed and it comes out looking great after all the grime and grease I get into it over the season. No tears in fabric, no zipper issues. Just a bomber jacket that will last 10+ years. Awesome work.
Simply Superb
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve had this jacket for 4 years and have used it year round for trecking, resort skiing and ski-touring. I’ve really abused it. It’s bomb-proof and still looks and, more importantly, performs like new. The pockets are ideal and I especially like they mesh internal dump pocket. The powder skirt does not get in the way when undone or when using the jacket for non-skiing activity. I have a solid/athletic build (95kgs/184cms) with broad shoulders and the Large fits like a glove with enough room for layering with either Atom/Cerium Lt or Thorium AR. Plenty of capacity in the hood for a helmet.
Tale of two materials. One great, other not so much
I have a variety of Arcteryx jackets, and pants. All for use when I take an annual snowboarding trip. Living in the Southern US, I only really wear my Rush jacket for 7 days a year, and that makes the issues experienced so frustrating given how little I have used it. The N80p fabric on the shoulders and sleeves is fantastic. It has held up great, and still to this day repeals water with ease. I wear a pack when snowboarding and looking at the shoulders you could never tell, let alone the fact its still super water resistant on the shoulders. Overall the jacket is awesome for cutting out the wind, and helping you keep warm. There are many great features as described in the specifications, and all these contribute to making the jacket really great, with one exception. The N40r material is just too soft and/or thin to stand up to a few uses on the mountain. After only two seasons (for me 7 days is a season), the N40r material started to let go. After one season and realizing that the N40r sections of the jacket cannot repeal water, I washed the jacket per the instructions, but no change. I've basically accepted the N40r section of the jacket is just not holding up, and I cannot keep anything in the pockets that cannot get soaking wet, as water easily passes through. Anything in my Stinger pants pocket stays nice and dry, albiet it has N80p material. Seeing how the N80p material repeals water and holds up, its disappointing the front of the Rush uses N40r and lets so much water through. Again, the shoulders and sleeves where the N80p material is used, is super water resistant and holding up even better than I could have ever imagined. Even the material used on the Atom jackets (LT and AR) I own are holding up way better, and I wear them very frequently, and with a backpack while hiking. If I was to select another jacket, I wouldn't think twice if it was 100% N80p, like the Sabre or Sidewinder.
Form & Function
Choosing a shell is choice paralysis because there are so many options. I live in the Pacific Northwest where a typical day in the mountains is rain, wind, snow, fog, ice, sun, or any blend of those conditions. This shell has a good combination of three outside pockets, two inside pockets, helmet optional hood adjustments, heavy & light Gore-Pro™ fabrics. The attention to detail in the construction is apparent; additionally, Arc'teryx offers excellent after sales service if needed. This jacket won't make you happy, it's not "bombproof," it's not the best thing ever made, but it will allow you to enjoy the outdoors comfortably.
Everyday Shell
Long time staple in the Whiteline series, the Rush is truly a skier's jacket. The heavy duty N80P-x Pro fabric make brushing against branches in the glades a breathe. Pockets have ample space to store virtually anything in your kit. The internal vertical access mesh pocket is perfect for protecting items you don;t need immediate access to. I cam comfortably fit a Fortez hoodie and Atom AR underneath. I've been wearing this jacket on and off the slopes with no problem. Really have no need for any more cool weather shells. If you choose a tamer color, you will have no problem wearing this jacket to the office. If you need one Arc gtx piece, this is it!
Arms are HUGE
I’m 6’3”, 225 pounds, pretty broad, bought XL. I can’t begin to understand the measurements on the arms of this Jacket. Look close at the pictures and you can see how BULKY the biceps and forearms are. Frankly the pictures are deceiving because the fabric on the forearms is folded to make it appear sleeker. I just don’t understand the thought process on this. It really bothers me. I can seriously fit my legs through the arms. Add to this that the sleeves run to my finger tips. I wear a Fortress Hoodie with and Atom underneath and I could still fit another humans arms in the jacket. I have a lot of arcteryx jackets which is why I am soooo disappointed in the sizing.
Nice, but long if you are short. it lacks a 2-way front zipper
I own several Arcteryx jackets including a Cerium LT and Atom LT, all in size small and they fit great. I am just under 5'6" and 135 pounds, 31" waist with an athletic build. I am returning my size Small Rush because it is very boxy and just too long on me. So long, that it felt restrictive with my knees bent. I might have kept it if it had a 2-way zipper to allow free leg movement. I got the Cassiar jacket instead, as it is a bit shorter and has a trimmer fit. But I recommend that Arcteryx move to 2-way zippers (like most hi-end ski jackets used to have) to improve fit and venting on all of its longer jackets!
Durability
In the 3rd season, I still marvel at my Rush jacket. I was introduced a secret side glade in a New England forest and I managed to spear my jacket with a 1/3 diameter inch branch which then snapped. After the run, I carefully searched without identifying even a mark from the contact. I have seen complains about damage and it makes sense given what we expose our gear to. But, I see no wear from carrying skis on my shoulders or skiing in the side country.
Bomber ski sell
Bought this shell in a large. Tried the medium, but was a little snug. I am 6 ft 185 larger shoulders so I tend to go between large and medium based on desired fit for layer/activity. Wanted a little more freedom of movement in this shell so went with the large and am very happy with it. The Rush jacket pairs nicely with the Saber pants. Nice interface with the powder skirt and buttons. Rode plenty of trees and still looks new.
My Favorite
Living in the Wasatch, working at one of the resorts and being outdoors most days, I've acquired a number of jackets and shells. The Rush is my favorite. It is nicely adjustable, proportionally excellent, ruggedly durable, lightweight and form fitting. I haven't found another shell with such a great combination of those factors. It may not have the pockets and add-ons some jackets do but then its simplicity is one of the things I appreciate about it. It has all the pockets and features I need for skiing and most outdoor activities. I just haven't found another brand that is so refined and embraceable. I liked it so much I was wearing it every day, so I bought a second for a different set of colors.
