Great storage solution
Was concerned I wouldn’t be able to fit my canoe on these. It’s 55 pounds,16’ long and 40” at its widest point. It fits fine and no contact with the metal frame, although I personally wouldn’t use this rack for a canoe any wider than this, not that there are many. Like one other review mentioned I did strip the head of 1 of the 4 screws used to secure to the wall, even with pre-drilling guide holes and soaping the screw as in the instructions.
Great Storage Solution
Very sturdy and easy to install. Fit my rather large sit inside kayak (Old Town Vapor 10) without the need of the included extension straps. The mounting screws require some pre-drilling to ensure you don't crack a beam or block but otherwise no issues.
Great rack, minor flaw.
Over all extremely happy with it. Sturdy, simple to use, secure. “Cheap mounting bolts” Easy fix with a run to the hardware store. That’s the only issue I had and it is a minor one. If you are getting this for a wide kayak like the pungo line up or an angler “fishing” kayak, the bottom of the kayak will touch the wall. Not a big deal. But if it bothers you a simple pressure treated 2x4 cut to length and installed behind the rack “shim” gives it enough spacing. If you do this you’ll need to get longer bolts.
Organizing my kayaks is so much easier!
Purchased one of the racks at the Tualatin store but had to go to Clackamas to get the other one... just couldn't wait. Put them up on my pump house and voila!! Instant organization. My daughter has used one of the kayaks since and said getting it off the rack and back on was a cinch. Well done REI and Suspenz!!
great rack but cheap screws
I recently moved from a home with a garage to one that doesn't have one. I used to store my 14' long, 21" wide kayak in the garage, on a set of Talic sea horses. I purchased the Suspenz racks as I now need to store my kayak along the fence (in a cover). I chose the Deluxe model over the EZ racks as I was concerned that the EZ racks' metal backs (above the foam) had greater potential to ding my kayak's carbon fiber hull. I like the overall design and ease of use of the Deluxe Racks. However, while screwing the supports into pressure-treated 6"x6" fence posts, I stripped the heads of 2 of the screws - one on each rack. As a result I can neither remove the screws, nor secure them entirely into the fence, and the racks wobble a bit. Fortunately my kayak only weighs 26 lb, so I'm confident the racks will still hold it - were it a heavy boat, I'd worry. Get yourself some stronger screws if you're hanging this on anything other than wallboard!
Well Made and Very Functional
I use these racks several times a week. Mounted 18" off the floor it is easy to load my Hobie Compass kayak and leaves sufficient room underneath for my gear bag and Thule Hullivator. The straps beneath the hull prevents the rack from denting the hull. Only downside is the screws that mount it to the wall. Even after drilling pilot holes and using soap on the threads one head broke off. Easily corrected with a quick trip to Home Depot for better screws.
Great Wall racks.
Solid wall racks that are easy to install. The racks have webbing that supports the kayaks and, when correctly adjusted, suspend the kayaks keeping them off the metal supports. The supplied screws are fine; if they are stripping then it might be because the wrong size screw driver is being used when installing. Also, the screws have to go into the wall studs, so having a good stud finder and a level are necessary to insure a solid mounting of the racks. We bought two sets of racks and had no issues with installation or usage.
Defective Product
Brand new $1800 kayak (Sandpiper 130) with huge scratch first time in rack. Installed according to instructions. Good for a beat up kayak you don't really care about!
Excellent way to store my kayak
This is a very well made rack. Easy to use and stores my boat securely. The strap setup with the fittings was a little but once I figured it out it works well.
Mount using 1/4" screws
Installation went OK, but using a 3/16" drill bit to make pilot holes is too small. A 1/4" one made it easier to put in the mounting screws.
