Great Bike Rack

We tried the Thule gateway 3 and it did not fit well on our older cars. We found the Thule a little more complicated than this one with it's 3 sets of clips and the opening/closing of the whole rack to fit on your car was not very intuitive. This rack however just has upper and lower clips and is super easy to adjust the rack and its arms. We didn't want to leave it on our car all the time so the ease of getting it on and off quickly was a huge plus for us. It also fit both of our cars much better. For the little extra it cost to get the Yakima vs the Thule, it was totally worth it. Highly recommend.

Terrible - damaged car
Michael

I installed the product exactly to Yakima's specifications, yet the product caused significant damage to my car: two large (expensive to repair) dents. I contacted Yakima who told me the product was not compatible with my car (Mazda CX9) - they even sent through a spec sheet to "prove" that was the case. Being sure I'd checked this in advance of buying, I triple checked and they had sent me the spec sheet for an incompatible model as "proof" - not the model I bought - which was in fact compatible. I contacted Yakima gain and brought this to their attention - they apologised for their "mistake" and then stated that I must have installed it incorrectly. I detailed that I had installed exactly as per their instructions, and they came back and stated that they were not liable for damage their product caused. Be very careful of this product, unless a few thousand dollars of damage is something you'd welcome.

Paid for a new one; received it used and scratched

The review reflects the entire purchasing experience at REI and not only the product. I paid for a new item and the box arrived late and opened. There are obvious scratches on the bike rack and a couple of bolts seem to have been forced. One arm is a tiny bit loose because of that. I wouldn’t have minded to buy a returned item, but the product should have been presented as such and priced accordingly.

Heavy, but secure!

No doubt, it’s a heavy rack, but it’s also a solid one. Did have an issue with the locking wheels for the support arms not wanting to budge fresh out of the box, but a quick stop by our local REI bike shop, and the guys had them moving. I have a Rockhopper Sport 29, and it feels like it will be ok, but I did order the top tube adapter for our daughter’s Cannondale. Three contact points between the bike and the rack leaves the set up feeling very secure, and I haven’t noticed a single wiggle between in town and interstate driving. Overall, I’m very happy with the Fullback 3!

Cumbersome

Unless you are regularly hauling three heavy bikes, this is more bike rack than you will need. This is so bulky and heavy, is it a real pain to take on and off the car, and you will need at lest one other person help install and uninstall. It's size adds about 3.5 feet to the length of your car when the rack is in the position parallel to the ground, and perpendicular it adds that to the height. The locks that rotate to fold it for storage, and loosen its connections to the car are very stiff and take some serious pressure to disengage. I returned it so I could get something more sleek and easy.

This rack is dangerous - beware

I almost never leave reviews for any products because I feel we can all like/dislike things based on our personal preferences. In this case, I feel compelled to write a strong negative review. We have bought this rack at REI while on the road trip in Arizona, REI helped us install the rack on our Honda Odyssey minivan. After a couple of days transporting children size bikes on it, we have loaded 2 adult size and 1 kids size bike on this rack. As soon as we entered the freeway, the rack got ripped off of our car along with the bikes and a plastic tailgate spoiler. Miraculously, no one was hurt in this accident. But it could've been potentially disastrous. The hooks on the straps of this car hook on the plastic spoiler and they are not deep enough to reach the metal part. And the plastic spoiler itself is fastened to the top of the trunk with plastic hardware and glued. Is it really strong enough to hold the weight of the rack and the bikes? Based on our experience it is not. We have been working closely with REI on resolution of our claim and investigation. They have been supportive for the most part. But what we most concerned about is safety and we hope this product will be recalled until further investigation and necessary adjustments can be made. At least for our make and model and for the cars with the similar setup in the back. Will contact Yakima Quality Assurance as well. In the meantime, stay clear of this product for your own sake and for the safety of those around you.

Rock sturdy if you can improvise with the straps

4 rather than 5 stars because I had to use excess length from the bottom and top straps to cinch them together to achieve proper stability. Just using the strap adjusters alone as instructed left the rack totally unstable because I could not sufficiently tighten the straps . (Possibly I was not correctly using the adjusters but no matter how hard I tried I was left with too much slack). Fortunately there is plenty of extra length left over on the bottom and top straps when mounted on my Nissan Xterra to tie them together in such a way that slack was removed and the rack was perfectly secure and stable. I did have to buy two Yakima adjustable top tubes for both our bikes and these worked perfectly with the rack. Almost hate to deduct a star from a product that works so well with a simple tweak, but you do have to tweak it, at least on my vehicle.

Great rack for 2016 Chevy Volt

Very nice bike rack for 1,2 or 3 bikes. It is 21 lbs, which isn't too bad and very sturdy. Following the guide I was able to install (1st time) in 30 min, but it should be much faster next time. Online Yakima has fit guide for many cars - my 2016 volt was listed with details and photos even. I was impressed with the quality of the design. Will be testing with 1000mile trip next week and 2 bikes, but I don't foresee any issues. It replaced a flimsier rack that was starting to worry me ;-). The integrated lock is nice, but only locks the outmost bike, or just buy a cheap loop cable to use in conjunction to lock all the bikes. They didn't have directions for included lock strap, and you need to install that first! Everything is adjustable and fit the Volt perfectly. I'm sure I will use on other vehicles in the future. Good job Yakima!

Damage to Car

Installed on Volvo XC60. The lower points of contact left black mark on my Volvo which I can deal with. It also left two very visible dents at the contact points. Read the manual: 30 lb max per bile and 90 lb max total. It also requires you to hand the bikes using their TubeTop which adds more weight. Unless you have lightweight bikes that don't exceed the weight limits, this thing can damage your car like it did mine. The REI DRT 1.1 for my daughter weighs 31 lbs. and the Novaro Tupelo 29er weighs 32, both which I bought at REI, along with Merida Big Seven 20 MD exceed the per bike and total weight limit. Again, if you're going with just the basic bikes that aren't lightweight, this rack isn't for you. Would have been nice if the person helping me out at REI told me about this; I ordered this online after speaking with offline REI folks. Anyhow, it is what it is. You can always return the rack to the good folks at REI during the first year, which I'm going to do do right now, but good luck having Yakima paying for the damages to the car.

Unable to adjust rack

With very limited use, this rack is totally unusable. The 2 of the 3 locking rings on the rack design do not release. In addition, there is no product support from Yakima. This seems like a product defect. I am able to download the instruction manual and watch a video on installation, I am not able to move these rings to adjust the rack. Am I alone with this problem?
