The Primus Campfire Cookset contains the best pots/pans for camp stoves on the market. I've tried several brands from all price points and nothing compares to this one. The set includes everything you need to prepare a gourmet meal outdoors but will definitely exceed expectations for simple meals as well. It's lightweight and packs into a small storage bag. I used the set with the Primus Onja stove (REI item # 151618) to prepare a pasta meal for 5 people. I placed the smaller pot on my small backpacking stove so that I could have all three going at once and it worked like a dream! I rinsed them off in the river near where we were camping then threw them in the dishwasher when I returned home; they cleaned up as good as new. I'm looking forward to checking out what else Primus has to offer!
I purchased this cook set primarily for overlanding, and light backpacking, so weight wasn't really a huge influence in my decision, and will not reflect negatively in this review. I typically don't need all 3 pieces for an outing anyways. The set is incredibly sturdy (which adds to the weight), and the high polish in the fry pan is great for cleaning out after use. The leather tabs are a nice touch, though I wonder how they will hold up to repeated washing. Overall the set is built VERY well, and will undoubtedly last for a very long. The added bonus of it being sturdy enough to be placed directly on a campfire is pretty awesome too. I would recommend that this be used for weekend type camping trips, not hardcore backpacking as it is pretty heavy when compared to other sets available.
Of this set I have purchased only the three liter pot. What appealed to me was it's shape and size and material. The lid is a good size and may work with other frying pans, though not with the one in this set, I believe. I felt the Primus frying pan and it's truly a tank. I will carry the pot though. I use it to boil water and make rice and baked bread--all over campfire. It has a great handle, lid, capacity, and pouring capability, but I don't need the integrated strainer, and they used aluminum rivets for the handle, not stainless. No big deal. The canvas sack it comes with is useful, but does not sinch down well.
I'm dinging it two stars for the quality control issue and PRIMUS's response when I inquired about getting a replacement lid. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars...It's a nice durable set. I bought this cookset to replace an older MSR set I have. I really like the design and that the lids have built-in strainers. I also like that that pan has a disc on the bottom to help with heat distribution. What I don't like is that I recommended this cookset to a friend and we had them both out on the same camping trip... I notice an issue with the smaller lid cover on my small pot. When I compared it to his mine was missing a crimp on the lid tap which is causing it to pop out. I called PRIMUS because my local REI stores no longer stock this kit and they said I'd have to pay for return shipping. I didn't even have it for two weeks, but oh well...I guess it's going back and I'll just re order a whole net set from another REI. I know it's probably petty, but when I'm shelling out almost $80 for two pots and one pan...I expect them not to be missing a very simple detail that shouldn't have been missed.
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get the products to test from time to time. On this trip to the Narrows Reserve, I tested out the Primus Campfire Cookset - Large. I give this cookset a 5/5. I’ve only used it thrice; twice outside my hotel room because I’m tired of microwave food and once at the campsite. Here are some of my thoughts on the set: It has some useful sizes. The pots are 1.8L and 3L. The 3L pot just fits in the frying pan. With that ensemble you can really cook up a storm. Or do what I’ve done and make spaghetti. I haven’t used this part of it yet, but you can use the 3L pot over a fire. That’s pretty cool! If you have some recipes I should try like that, just let me know. They are easy to clean! Seriously. Granted I’ve only used them for spaghetti and brownies, but I can’t complain. I’m currently living in a hotel room and doing dishes in the bathtub. They’re still pretty darn shiny all things considered. The lids have strainers. Both of them. So useful. I will say though that the large pot is kinda difficult to turn over to strain. The handle sometimes want’s to slip out of its notch and you have to gasp real loud and catch it.
This set looked nice, but I didn't realize that there's no cover for the frying pan. Also, the frying pan had some scratches- I don't know how that could've happened in a new set, but it makes me wonder about the durability of the finish. I haven't decided if I will exchange it for the larger set or something entirely different.
I love how compact the pots and pans were and you can tell they are well made with durable material. Great cooking experience, recommend if you are car camping as these things could get heavy, fast!
I love having these for our teardrop trailer. They pack up perfectly and don't take up much space. We enjoy cooking as gourmet as possible and this set provides everything we need. Food does stick the first couple times, just be sure to use lots of oil/butter and keep the burners on low. I've found they are super easy to clean and like to keep barkeeper's friend with me just in case there is tough spot. Overall, I love these and am stoked to have them.
Love the look and thought to engineering of these, but found food sticks to each of them, most of the time. :(.
