Thanks for a Lifetime of Great Times & Memories
Just have to give a shout out about my Old Town Discovery Canoe. I bought this model literally 30 years ago and had no idea how much my family and I would enjoy it. I've named my canoe, "The Green Stationwagon of the Seas". I've really enjoyed making many, many memories in it, ranging from weekend paddles with the whole family in backyard lakes and rivers as well as taking off to the far flung reaches of civilization for week long paddling adventures. I've taken this baby EVERYWHERE! Thank you for making such a great product.
This is the one to buy
Excellent canoe. Holds lots of weight as I use a trolley motor with it and because of the size of my favorite lake (20 miles from end to end and back) I also bring two I believe their dc29 or 27 batteries (the largest marine batt. available), a large cooler, life jackets, a bulge pump, two emergency oars, one flare gun, one large tackle box, four fishing polls, fish finder sonar, waterproof speaker, phone (for music), and three large rocks from the loading area for forward ballast unless I have my 100# wife sitting in the front seat (if she's there, no need for rocks for ballist). I also have a clamp in third seat for we add a third person with everything else. The lake is filled with motor/speed boats and when their all drunk they have tried to sink me but this just rides the 3 foot waves with no problems. I got a mini Kota 50ld thrust 36"depth bar with a side clamp on mount, I've been using that for three years trouble free. This canoe takes on the waves with ease and has never been overtaken by water. I have and will continue to recommend this canoe to anyone that's looking to start the adventure of exploration of our lakes. I've never sunk it, and it's never been tipped over by others boaters.... I highly recommend this canoe.
My 25 years with the world's most versatile canoe
My dad bought this boat 25 years ago and some of my best memories with him were in this canoe. We took a 30 mile paddle down the Huron river in an afternoon like it was nothing. This thing is an absolute barge. My father paddled it solo with no problems for years before passing it on to me. I've only capsized it one time, our first time out, when we went over an unexpected drop in the river. After 25 years, I still take this canoe out several times a month during the warm seasons in Florida. I have it rigged with a sail from Sailboats-to-Go and it's some of the most fun I've ever had in my life. I also use electric and gas motors with a side transom mount. This thing will handle whatever you put on it with no problems. The PROS: Insane carry capacity - up to 2,000 lbs and you could fit 4 people without luggage. My wife and I take our 2 dogs with plenty of room to spare. Stable - This is very important for a canoe in my opinion, as I hate going overboard. The primary stability in this boat is lower, meaning that it does rock side to side rather easily. This allows for better maneuvering. The SECONDARY stability, however, is rock solid, meaning that the canoe will rock a little to the side and then stabilize without allowing the boat to easily tip. If you're up and moving around, this can make balancing a little tricky, but the boat itself is not easy to tip over. Durable - the 3 layer construction makes it very tough. I have put a few deep gouges in the hull passing over rocks and such, but it seems they haven't gotten through the first layer and the hull remains super strong. I also have all sorts of gear clamped to the gunwales (the entire sail apparatus, outrigger floats, leeboards, rowing oars, and a side transom mount for an outboard engine. All of that pressure is being put on the gunwales and the vessel handles beautifully in any conditions. It's really an amazing boat and I get all sorts of comments on it. The CONS: Heavy - At 98 lbs bare, my dad used to use the yoke to load and unload this himself, It's definitely easier to manage with 2 people though. Also, I would hate to have to portage this canoe with gear. Oil Panning - Currently, I notice oil panning in rough waters. I didn't know to look for it before so I'm not sure if this is a newer thing to start happening. Either way, I left it upside down uncovered in the Florida sun for a couple years so that may have something to do with it (did I mention durable?). Overall, I would highly recommend this canoe to anyone who is not seeking a small and light boat. If you can handle a larger canoe on your own (just paddle backwards), or have a helper, this will be a canoe you can pass down to your kids like my dad did. This is the Gaston of canoes.
Bought used
I have not been in a canoe in over 20 years, bought this one for fishing. I took it out for the first time yesterday, but it was a somewhat windy day on the lake. It reminded me really fast how much heavier a canoe is over a kayak. I'm now looking for some accessories to make it fit my needs a little better, but it really felt good to get back out on the water.
The Best Paddlers Canoe
There is no greater vessel to transport you through the natural wonders of the Land of Lady Liberty, than the canoe. If the river or still waters are calling you then The Old Town Discovery 169 is the canoe for you. It’s a strong canoe, rigid and tough like like the granite walls that line the Merced River in The Yosemite Valley. The bow and stern resemble the snow capped peaks of The Grand Tetons that you admire while paddling down the Snake River. And it’s hull resemble the Grand Canyon with its vastness to carry your REI camping gear deep into the lush forest. With all the little humans frolicking and trampling on the meadows, rest assured, the Discovery 169 leaves no trace as you explore the wild heart of the wilderness. What it does leave behind are the fond memories blown into your mind like the wind, which you will be forever grateful for. But be warned, this canoe is not for the weak and boring but for the strong and adventurous. So please, get a canoe, get outside and reconnect with nature. -REI Customer #1
Loaded with versatility
I’ve been paddling for years but mostly in kayaks, but I wanted to start bringing my dog along. After comparing many canoes I chose the Discovery 169 and never looked back. Plenty of room for the dog and a friend plus gear. Very stable yet nimble and maneuverable for its size. We are looking forward to many adventures in this tough well made boat.
Durable. Stable for a canoe.
I've owned this canoe for 23 years, and have taken it more places than I can count. It has been durable beyond my wildest expectation. Things have happened to this canoe that I thought surely would destroy it. Including sitting out in the open sun for years. And it is still just a battleship of a canoe. It's a fairly heavy boat but I can still get it onto and off of my car single-handedly. I have kids now who are just discovering what a great Adventure it is to canoe. I will never, ever sell it, and I am planning river trips with it in the midwest currently.
Great Canoe
I bought this canoe about 30 years ago when the kids were small. I have taken it all over. I have fished from it and hunted from it. It has handled early season ice. I have never flipped the canoe, I have tipped it so much to one side it has taken on water, but never flipped. I has enough carrying capacity to hold three hunters, a dog and 5 dozen decoys. I was concerned about a canoe without a keel, but it tracks as well those that have one. The only negative is the cane seats rotted after 25 years and I replaced with webbing.
Received A USED Canoe!
I bought this canoe in March, 2020, when it came to my house it was beat up to say the least. REI did return it(with me having to deliver it to a semi driver) and gave me another one after quite a big hassle. Now since I bought it online, trying to get a receipt from the Roseville, MN store(so I can register it) can only be described as a disaster!
Indestructible
Bought this canoe 26 years ago. I've put it through absolute hell. Toughest d*** thing I've ever seen. Been all over the country across lakes and down rivers. Has scars. But nothing even close to making it inoperable. Planning this year's trips already. Hands down the best entertainment value for the dollar that I've spent on anything.
