Tough, stable canoe
I had a Discovery 158 many years ago. The only thing that has changed, is they used to have molded plastic seats, so the webbing seats probably shed a couple pounds. If you want a good beginner canoe that will last for generations, is stable, versatile, and rugged, but won't require much portaging, than this is the canoe for you. It slides over rocks, handles class 1~2 rivers easily, and quite maneuverable. Primary stability is very good for flat water, and I used to regularly stand and push-pole in shallower water. I did not use it in large, windswept lakes, but suspect secondary stability in roller waves would not be very good, based on the hull design. Of course, it is not a high performance canoe, so its weight and hull design will also hamper long portages and higher speeds on the lake. The wide gunnels will not allow for the use of double bladed kayak paddles, at least in the rear seat. Sit & switch single bladed is the way to go with this canoe, but I never tried a bent shaft to see if it would increase performance. (I never had any complaints using a simple, straight shaft paddle) But it simply cannot be beat, as a family canoe. I've since moved on to an ultralight performance canoe, but there are times that I wish that I still had that Old Town, so I could just go out and bounce over rocks and beach without concerning myself with hull damage.
Lightweight and Tough
I got this canoe because I wanted a lightweight two person canoe that I could handle myself if I had to as a female. I also do a fair bit of portaging. The canoe is stable, durable, and comfortable. A great all around canoe. I've done my fair bit of "rock painting" (when the canoe scraps against a rock, leaving behind some green) and the canoe is very durable, a work horse! I feel very safe in it.
very good all-round canoe
We were a little biased toward Old Town products after getting a pair of Old Town kayaks a few years ago. This canoe is is well-made, stable, and very durable so far. Maybe a little on the heavy side, but for a general-purpose canoe, the Discovery 158 was the best value we could find. Not as sleek or light as more expensive canoes, but a good choice for recreational paddlers. Delivery from Old Town was timely and the canoe arrived in perfect condition.
Maiden Voyage
This Old Town Discovery made her first voyage last week. I broke a Corona over her bow christening her Endurance, and the first voyage was a 210 mile journey on the New River from Ashe NC to Sandstone WV. Rapids, portages, long stretches of empty miles all presented their own factors that the canoe overcame.
