What '”adjustments" means is to is to align the brake pads for accurate braking, tension the spokes so the wheels spin straight, adjust the limit screws and cable tension to ensure crisp/accurate shifting, adjust bearing tension to make the wheels spin smooth, plus chain lube and tire inflation, excluding installing replacement parts or accessories.

New bikes go through a normal break-in period, after which they should be readjusted. All bicycles sold at REI include free adjustments for one year after purchase date—as many times as you need. Members get two total years on e-bikes. Not included: replacement or installation of new components or accessories, any other services. Basically, you buy the parts and we fix it. These e-bikes are Class 1, meaning that the motor only kicks in when you start pedaling and stops helping at 20 mph. Most new riders start out with a class 1 e-bike. Class 1 bikes are the most affordable and, from a regulatory standpoint, the most universally accepted.

You can ride one on city streets and many bike paths. This class of e-bikes is starting to be allowed on traditional mountain-bike trails, though access is not universal, so always check first.

Our bike design team in Seattle, WA meticulously designed these bikes to make it easy to start riding. Part of that includes one highly adjustable size. Generation e fits riders from 5’0”–6’3” thanks to:

• Low step-through design, meaning that bar between your legs is very low
• Adjustable seat, up/down and forward/backward
• Adjustable stem, meaning the handlebars can move closer to you

The 1.1 comes in 4 colors, has a bump-absorbing fork, 36v battery, average 30-40 mile range and will ship in June. The 1.2 comes in 3 colors, has a front rack, 48v battery, average 40-50 mile range and will ship in September.

The Schwalbe Super-Moto-X tires use Double Defense Green Guard, which combines special India rubber under the tread with SnakeSkin on the sidewalls for puncture protection. The wheels also use heavy gauge spokes for extra durability and are wide and small, meaning they can easily roll over gravel, potholes and other urban terrain without the extra weight of traditionally sized wheels. All of this is a fancy, convoluted way of saying “super durable!”

Yes! The integrated rear rack holds up to 59 lbs. and meets the ISO 11243 standard for child bike seats. Make sure your child is properly secured and, as with anything you attach to your rack, read the accessory manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Yes! In fact it has a double kickstand that you can kick down from either side and makes it super stable—a must for a heavier bike like an e-bike.

The lights are powered directly from the battery, so as long as your battery is charged, your lights will turn on with the touch of a button.

Despite the fears, most riders will never run out of battery! But if you do, the bike still works as a regular bike—it’ll just feel really heavy. You can avoid this by riding on lower modes if you notice your battery level is low.

Generation e uses a Bafang motor and battery system with 5 modes of pedal assist, plus a “walk” mode that offers a helping hands while pushing the bike. The amount of power each mode delivers is as follows:
0: No assistance; motor is off
1: 30% support, ideal for saving battery on long rides
2: 52% support, ideal for conserving battery
3: 64% support, ideal for smooth acceleration on moderate-length rides
4: 80% support, ideal for help uphill
5: 100% support when you need it most (it’ll give you the least amount of distance before you need to recharge, but sometimes climbs require that!)

The display shows your mode—and also a ton of other information, like battery level and speed.

Bikes that are sold DTC are partially dis-assembled for shipping. They require a certain level of re-assembly by the customer upon receipt. Instructions and tools are included.
