Great "extended" daypack. Size: this is a 40L pack, so expect a 24h loadout on this, maybe a 2-day trip, if you pack light on food and it's summer. I'm 5'11" and wide shoulders with 46" chest, so was a bit worried about tightness, but as soon as I put this thing on, it fit my body like a glove. I have 5.11 Rush 48, Rush 72, Mystery Ranch Urban Assault and a large North Face 75L pack and none of them come even close to the level of comfort this Baja 40 gives me. I know, each is a different style and purpose, but still wanted to mention that this was the most comfortable pack I've ever tried. Adjusting the upper and lower straps for the shoulders is key here, because the pack has a heavy curve, so setting it up at the right place on your back is important for the final fit. Construction: it has a thick steel wire butterfly-shaped loop going across the top and bottom with the wires nearly touching in the middle - this whole frame is bent outward into the packs' cavity, to contour around your upper and middle back, so although it is extremely comfortable, be aware that this design will make the frame protrude into the pack itself, so the amount of storage you have inside is less than it visually feels like while wearing it. There is a very large gap between the back mesh and the back of the pack cavity itself - it is great for air circulation (packs is not pressed directly against your back), but it also takes some storage space away. Just for illustration, I can stick an entire closed fist between the backpack and the back mesh - that is how large the air gap is... But overall the pack, stitching, and construction are top notch. Heavy, Heavy seams and proper reinforcement stitches in high tension areas. Easily compares to Mammut, North Face or Mystery Ranch quality. When empty, it's a bit over 2 pounds, so very light! The storage compartment is one large cavern accessed through a wrap around water sealed zipper - be mindful that the zipper opens all the way down on one side, the other side goes only about 1/2 way down, so the flap opens kind of 45 degrees instead of straight down. The top has a dedicated compartment for easy to access things, like toiletries, first aid kits, etc.. on each side is a port for hydration pack hose there is a pouch inside to put your hydration pouch and three velcro loops to hang it on. The back of the pack on the outside has 14 loops total to hook your carabiners and other gear to. Four compression straps on the sides can also hold your poles. The two side pockets are rather narrow, so you can fit a narrow bottle, but won't fit a wide mouth Nalgene unless you really cram it in - very very tight, though. At the very bottom and close to the hip strap is a zipper hiding a full sized rain cover (the pack has a false bottom. The cover is waterproof and is attached to the pack so you cannot lose it. Easy to apply, easy to stow away. The shoulder straps are on the thinner side, but nicely stiff and very comfortable, adjustable both with upper and lower straps for proper tension and positioning. Hip belt is also not as thick as expected, but perfectly fitting, firm and helps ease the load on the shoulders. Each side of the hip belt has a water sealed zipper pocket. You can fit an iPhone Mini, but won't fit an XL or the latest full sized Galaxy (that is puzzling to me - we all have smartphones and need them at the ready). Easily fits a wallet, keys, chap sticks, sunscreen stick, etc... Chest strap has a springy elastic and is also fully removable, works well and has a ton of adjustment length to fit anyone, from very thin build to very large and broad chests and no, it doesn't cut into your neck due to being positioned lower than other backpacks. Overall, this is a great pack and I definitely recommend it. Just be mindful that this is not a pocket-loaded pack - literally 2 compartments, 2 bottle pockets and 2 tiny hip pockets on the belt. That's it.
This was my first backpacking backpack and looking at the specs and features I was super excited but the hip belt pockets are tiny and the water bottle pockets on the side are super tight and while they can fit a 32 oz wide mouth water bottle it is a very tight fit and discourages me from drinking water while hiking. Overall a great backpack tho. Those are my only two complaints about the backpack. It’s a versatile fit as well fitting my boyfriend of 6 ft 220 lbs and me at 5’6 and 130 lbs well
Odd backpack with a weird bendable frame. I got it in the mail and quickly realized I didn’t like it. The frame made the pack feel small and had an odd layout.
Loved the look, feel, and quality. Hoped a 40 was big enough, but not quite..
