A bit big for me, but everything as advertised
There's a couple really smart features on this bag that I've realized since owning it. The zipper garage and ID window for starters. But what I like the most is the end-loading design. When I haul heavy/expensive loads through airports, I'm always a little concerned about the zipper breaking. Especially when the load is one giant/contained object inside that doesn't distribute its weight evenly and could just bust out at any moment. I've used luggage straps in these cases with my previous backpack duffels and I've had similar fears/taken similar action when traveling with scuba gear as well. However, with the end loading design in a duffel style bag, the weight and force is never applied directly to the zipper. It's applied to the zipperless circumference of the bag, made of heavy duty fabric. Beyond that, everything else is as you expect. Shoulder strap is nice, it's sharp enough looking overall. The size is pretty big, in my photos you can see it with a fully loaded Osprey Aura 65L in it and again with a 40L Atom Pack in it. Even with the Aura 65, I could have fit my daypack in it had I wanted to bring that along too. While I pack pretty minimally, and it's a touch too big for my Atom, its probably perfect if you have one of the ever popular 60-70L packs on the market today, or if there are other things outside your pack you wish to bring. Added bonus that it nearly stows away in it's own pocket.
A great value that fits the bill.
Purchased this duffel 2 years ago for transporting a 50L deuter pack for a Grand Canyon weekender. I’ve used it several times to pack a 75 L Gregory Baltoro, and this fits the bill perfectly. Strong and durable enough, and inexpensive to boot, compared with other duffels. I don’t usually fly with my pack, but when I do, this is handy and protects all the clips, zips, straps and the like that hang off the pack. It isn’t comfortable to carry for any distance, but it gets the basic job done. A suggestion would be to make a few color options, or a pattern that stands out from the crowd of black luggage on the airport carousel. Thanks REI, for making a solid, useful, affordable product.
Easy solution for air travel
Easy to slide my pack in with boots and poles as well. It held up perfectly for the journey, just needing a wipe down after collecting some dirt. Packed down it's fairly bulky so make sure you have an accessible spot in your pack to stow it. You will probably want to take it out and put your pack in it just before leaving it at the luggage drop. I wouldn't want to carry it longs distances, it's not meant for comfortable carry like your backpack is.
Made flying with backpack streamlined
I purchased this duffle to cover my 65L backpack during flights while making a multi-country winter journey through Europe. With so many straps and loose ends that could get caught up in luggage handling when flying, this duffle was a huge asset to keep it safe. The REI duffle fit my 65L backpack fine, and had enough room to spare that I packed in my heavy coat during flights so I wouldn't have to lug it onboard. The duffle also packed up quite small and conveniently fit within the top-lid of my backpack.
Just Right
Good quality, with large heavy-duty zippers. The shoulder strap isn't padded, but that wasn't an issue as I thought it might be - first, because it also has a handle, and second, because we never carried our packs in the duffels much at all. We put them in right before checking them with the airline, and took them out at baggage claim. I also bought an Osprey duffel which has a padded strap, but it carried more like a giant trash bag - I returned it for another of these.
Solid bag for transporting gear safely
I've used a few of these pack duffels over the years, which I think are absolutely essential for flying to a backpacking destination. I like this one, especially for the built in mesh stuff sack. It is a little tight for my 65L pack, at least based on my inclination to fit in a few things around the backpack when loading. Two points I've liked a little better on others that I have had: 1) padding on the shoulder strap. I've flown into airports where you have to carry the bag a very long way and like to have a little better padding. 2) The opening is a little tight when stuffing.
Holds a TON and held up well in air travel.
I used this to transport an Osprey Aura 50 backpack on a transcontinental flight. I ended up buying a new, larger Osprey Aura 65 pack where I landed and used this bag to take them both back home. See my video of everything I was able to get into this thing (two packs, two sleeping bags, a ground pad, etc.). It holds an impressive amount! I was comfortable carrying the thing on my shoulder, but I know some people might not want to hand carry so much weight versus having something with wheels. I didn't mind - I am on a backpacking trip after all. The bag is lockable and durable. I like the top opening versus another entry method. It stands up when full with no problem, depending on what you have in it of course.
The perfect size for checking my backpack
I looked at pack covers, but they tend to be made for checking larger backpacks for air travel. My pack is 40L and may or may not fit in the overhead or underseat area of a regional jet, so I wanted a relatively compact and lightweight duffel to put it in just in case I have to check it. Although the dimensions of the duffel differ from those of the pack (for example, 10" x 10" for the duffel vs. 15" x 7" for the pack), pack contents can be rearranged so it fits the duffel, especially when I pull out my lightweight day pack and load it with my valuables).
Great value
I have a little Granite Gear Crown 2 and was looking for a cheap bag to check it to Yukon for a backpacking trip. This bag did a good job. I like the way it folds into itself for storage, and that same pocket was a useful place to store my day one hiking clothes on the flight. My pack, shoes, poles, and first-day clothes fit inside the bag with room to spare, and through six flights the airlines had no issues with it. It's pretty awkward to carry -- noticeably more awkward than my daughter's Osprey pack duffel -- but it was also a good bit cheaper, and it's fine. Based on this first extended use, I think it's a good value.
It does what it's meant to do.
IMPORTANT!! This bag is not intended as a duffel bag, it's intended to put your backpack in. I bought it to put my Mystery Ranch Terra 50 in for a flight. I had visions of the straps on my pack getting caught in some conveyor and ruining it. This bag was perfect. Held the fully loaded pack and there was enough room left over for a week-long first aid kit and a spare set of shoes. Held up just fine for the round trip flight.
