Very functional but poor quality material
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) I've wanted one of the fleeces ever since they first came out when I was a kid. Now that I've finally got one, I've been seriously disappointed to find that after only a month of use the stretch panels have already started to degrade, with very noticeable pilling and even losing some elasticity (see pictures). Sure the pilling is a initially just a minor cosmetic detail, but one of the main reasons to choose a fleece over a lighter and more packable modern synthetic fill jackets is increased lifespan - but a month of light-moderate use is way too quickly to have something like this happen, and I can only assume it will get worse and develop into a more serious problem in the near future. Not sure if it's just mine or this is a universal problem, I do notice than no other reviews have mentioned it (although this review is NOT incentivized...). I love the functionality of this jacket, it's super warm and has excellent breathability, but I've had many different jackets with stretch material from other companies and have never had something like this happen. I may look into doing a warranty request, and possibly buying a used earlier model - from what I've seen from friends' jackets, an earlier model monkey man will likely be in better shape than this (essentially) brand new one. Note I've only washed the jacket twice in cold water and have never put it in the dryer. Additionally I find the jacket to fit quite large, I am usually a medium in Mountain Hardwear and other brands but the shoulders in the medium of this jacket are quite a bit wider than expected.
Great Mid Layer
Purchased this jacket with the purpose of using it as a mid layer underneath the Quasar2 jacket by MHW. I've understood Polartech to be a wonderful fleece fabric company so I knew it wouldn't disappoint. I've taken it up on Mt.Saint Helens multiple times as my mid layer, it's light enough to perspire efficiently(thanks polar tech# but also warm enough to keep the terrible Fall weather on Helens out. We spent 9 hours navigating a dreadful white out with pouring rain/snow. Not only my rain jacket stay dry#I love 3 layer jackets) but the mid layer held up through freezing temperatures along with my one measly wool layers while we helped 2 other unprepared climbers down the mountain. This jacket does not do well as stand alone in windy conditions.
Nice lightweight jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Received this today (end of April) so it's really too warm out to know how well it will perform. However, a few notes if you're considering this jacket. It is surprisingly large compared to tag sizing. I'm 6'2" and 180lbs, and the Large size is almost too big. I normally buy XL (where the sleeves are still too short and body/neck too big) or LT (usually better for slimmer fit but sometimes tight in the shoulders), but this is larger/longer than every other LT I've had before. I would almost call this a XLT. The material is also much lighter and thinner than expected, so it may be more of a liner or zip up sweater... won't really know until fall/winter though.
Monkey Man Jacket Fills an Important Niche
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There are a lot of fleece jackets out there, but the Monkey Man may be the best for layering. There are some warmer, although I wore my new one over a tee and flannel shirt in 40s weather at an outdoor Xmas event and never got cold. There are some more stylish, although the MM is no "slouch." There are some with a greater array of pockets, although my MM's conventional side and generous chest pockets are just right for my "readers" and Iphone 7. There are some more wind proof, but the MM is fine in a 25mph breeze. This jacket is light, thin, incredibly comfortable and perfect for changing temperatures and conditions.
Comfortable
I have slight mixed reviews about this item. Please be aware that thunderhead gray is actually more of a tarnished copper look. Imagine gray with a slight bit of blue in it. Light blue of course. It does not look gray whatsoever so keep that in mind. Also, the hand cuffs are too big just like last years (for me personally). I have to spread my hand out to keep it from sliding down my rist. It is super comfortable and I feel it would be good for when the cold comes. I am 6' 0 and 175 lbs and I chose a large. It's a bit big however I don't think a medium would fit me. I have pretty broad shoulders.
Esteemed Monkey Man... could use some improvements
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Was pretty stoked to get this jacket as the softness coupled with the high performace of this jacket was often a high mark in reviews. However this update is not only fits very large (my own fault possibly), but more so I find the jacket has these stetch areas near the ends of the sleeves that love to attract the bits of "monkey" fur. I find myself shaving the ends just to keep it free of pill. Bought this near the end of the season, and did not get the opportunity to wear it enough to test warmth. Bought a medium, 5'9'' and 160 lbs. Would go with a small next time...
poor quality
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) I bought a Monkey Man jacket 8 years ago, I was so impressed by how warm and yet light the jacket was, I bought four more jackets for my family. Last year when my jacket needed to be replaced, I bought the new 2017 Monkey Man jacket. I was not impressed. I had zipper problem right off the start then the zipper broke completely eight month after purchasing it. The jacket is not as warm, the fleece is thinner than the previous Monkey Man jacket. In short, I find the quality of the jacket has declined but the price remains high.
great looking jacket.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I truly enjoy his jacket the pockets are big it's plenty warm it's got venting in all the right spots. It's the kind of jacket that people want to come up and touch which can be a little awkward if you don't embrace it. As long as you're looking for a light to mid-layer I think this jacket would do well. If you're looking for this to be a stand-alone jacket in in the middle of winter you probably can't get away with that. The only real complaint I have about the jacket is that the inside does not feel as nice as the outside.
disappointing compared to previous model
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was replacing a lost Monkeyman jacket from years ago. This new one is admittedly much lighter than the original, but it feels cheap and thin. Hold it up and you can see the light coming through the fabric, it's hard to imagine that will hold up for long (or resist cold winds very well). The side panels look ugly. But the thing that made me return it was the front branding patch. Something about it looks weird to my eyes, eye-catching in a non-positive way. Aesthetically displeasing. So, mine (black) went back...
fits like a 70's smoking jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While the construction is well done, stitching, zippers, cuffs ect........ the fit is simply stupid. I wear a large for 180 5'11 chassis. The overall fit is baggy but I could not wear a medium for the arm length. The ribbed material for the fleece is soft and feels great but offers zero warmth as between each rib there is no fleece but just little holes. The waist is loose and long. This was a compete waste of money for me and a large disappointment. I should have sent is back .... Dave
