Comfortable and stable

I just got these on Friday and took them for a six mile hike with 13% grade, 1200 feet up and the same back down with a 20 pound pack. I've been waiting for these Hoka hiking boots for a while. I do both backcountry and cross country backpacking and local hiking. I usually wear different boots for the two activities. Due to a recent injury, I wanted to try Hokas for hiking and backpacking to reduce the stress on my joints. Here are my initial impressions. First, the shoes are VERY comfortable right out of the box. These are not stiff mountaineering boots. I wear a 10.5 in women's and my boots were just under a pound each. They have lightweight leather uppers, what appears to be a rubber (or some tough material) around the toe for reinforcement and they have fairly aggressive "megagrip" Vibram soles. I replaced the Hoka insole with a pink Superfeet and I wear wool socks with liners. I had no issue with my toes jamming into the front of the boot even on very steep downhill. I stepped on every pile of rocks I could but could not feel a jagged edge no matter how I tried. The traction was excellent on sandy and steep terrain as well as on the rocks. I generally like a very stiff sole for trails where I will be doing a lot of scrambling across granite. These soles are very flexible. I did not scramble but on the few "tests" I did, I did not suffer a loss of stability due to the lack of stiffness. For those who are familiar with Hoka shoes, these are not as squishy as their running shoes (which is a good thing). Also, I noticed they widened the outer edge of the shoe, near the little toe, to add stability. As someone who has snapped her 5th metatarsal like a matchstick, I really appreciated the extra wideness there. I tried to roll my foot to the outer edge but could not. It's no guarantee against rolling but it felt really stable. I felt so good in these boots will dare to wear them on my next Sierra backpacking trip. The extra cushioning made my feet very happy. Happy Hiking!

Started great, then they began to leak

Purchased these boots for a hiking trip to Glacier park in August 2015. They were very comfortable. This year, the boots are still comfortable but they began to leak. I hiked with these boots at Mount Rainier and the Olympics and my socks began getting damp during a hike. I thought it was a one or two time issue. No such luck. Yesterday the socks were wet through and through after 3 miles of a rugged 8 mile hike. I expected better of these boots, especially for the price. They are very comfortable when the conditions are dry, but are very disappointing when hiking in damp or rainy conditions.

Best Boots Ever

After putting over 30 miles on these boots in the past couple of weeks it is time for a review. Having a wide foot it is often difficult to find ladies boots with this feature. Although they are not listed as wide they should be. I tried the Lowa boot at the store and it wasn't wide enough... this was my only alternative. I am so glad I gave these a try. Boots are holding up well are extremely comfortable, extra cushy and you can't feel sharp rocks under your feet. They are waterproof too. Go ahead and give them a try you won't be disappointed. I can honestly say, as an experienced hiker, these are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned.

Great boot, 4.5 stars

I have suffered from plantar faciitis for over a year. I had not been able to do more than light day hikes and was wondering if I would ever be able to hike or pack again. This boot has made this possible! It is light weight enough for a day hike and sturdy enough for packing with medium weight over rough terrain. My feet hurt way less after a day in these and I have more support than in any other light weight hiker. I don't love the cuff. It did rub me until I found just the right socks. The laces are are designed so that you can really dial in the fit. I would recommend these boots to anyone with PF who wants to get out and keep hiking without the pain and further injury!

The Best Hikers for Women with Feet Issues

After many, many years of trail hiking and standing on concrete in my job, I have essentially no padding left on my feet bottoms and no cartilage left between the bones on the top. Yikes! The favorite part of my camping excursions has always been hiking, but recently I could not end any walk without being in agony. Enter Hoka One One; their mid-soles are like clouds, and the top is roomy enough to keep the pressure off. My latest walk on the Salmon River Trail for 3 hours did not leave me limping, which is utterly fantastic. They are breathable, water resistant and have good ankle protection, and they are not heavy at all. I'm very thankful that the REI folks help me pick this one out!

Like walking on a sofa

I messed up my foot trail running (painful neuroma) and had to find a pair of boots with short break-in time that would pamper problem feet. I also have previous foot bone breaks so I take my footware seriously. I wore these around for a few days and a 7 mile hike before taking off on a Sierra backpacking trip. 10-13 miles /day. 35 pound-ish pack. No foot pain related to the injuries. BUT: getting the laces right so as to avoid ankle rubbing and/or pressure was uniquely difficult, and required some fancy lacework. Helpful howtos on youtube. Keeping the boots tight enough to avoid foot movement and blisters while avoiding ankle issues, especially for downhill was challenging. This is the only thing that keeps these boots from being 5 stars. The cushioning is amazing, and it is pretty miraculous that I was able to hike the trip with no major issues.

Back on the trail!

I own Hoka running shoes and was thrilled when they developed hiking boots. They have allowed me to get back on the road and trail in relative comfort even with spinal arthritis and a surgically-repaired foot. I typically wear a 10 in hiking boots and a 9.5 in casual shoes, but I tried on both sizes in my REI store, and the smaller size fit well. For their inaugural trek, I took them out for six miles on the AT, heading SOBO from the MD/PA border. This section of the trail is fairly rocky; I landed several steps at a weird angle, but the boots provided enough support to keep my ankle from rolling. The removable Hoka inserts made it easy to switch my own inserts into the boots. They're flexible enough that I had no issues with heel slippage, even right out of the box. I can't wait to rack up the trail miles with these!

Best hiking boot ever!

These shoes are a sight for sore feet. Super comfortable and great support for my weak ankles. I love the grey color. But back to the real meat and potatoes. Not only are these shoes comfortable due to their cushioning. They are true to size and not too wide. I have a long narrow flat foot and these hiking boots have made it possible for me to hit the trails without any pain again. Where have these shoes been all my life?

What a hiking boot should feel like

I bought the Hoka One One on the recommendation of my farrier for my horse. I saw him wearing a pair and he explained how comfortable and supportive they were. He wears them all day and his feet don't get tired. I saw this pair of hikers on line and decided to give it a chance. I have not tried a Hoka before. So, I measured my foot and bought the size that matches the chart - I did not go by my standard shoe/boot size and purchased 1/2 size larger. The toe box is roomy but not sloppy. The arch support is nice and I am pretty picky about that. The heel fits perfectly. I have great traction on the sole and great comfort inside with plenty of lateral support. I live and hike in Florida, so I can't speak to the performance on a moderate trail up in the Smokys or out West - yet. Heading up to NC in October... can't wait to walk all day in my new pair of Hoka One One - "flying above the Earth."

Best for comfort and traction

I wore these almost every day while hiking the rainforest in Belize, and I am so glad I did. It was the rainy season so there were many puddles to walk through, but my feet stayed completely dry. I was able to walk up and down steep, muddy hills with no problem while my companions were all slipping. I bought these hiking boots because I use Hoka One One shoes for running. These boots are just as comfortable as the running shoes. I tried out many other hiking shoes brands, but these were by far the most supportive and comfortable. My feet were never tired or sore, even after walking all day.
