Really well made & totally functional

I know this is expensive for a Waistpak but believe me it is worth every penny. Most packs do not stay tight, especially if you have it loaded with water. I have had other waist packs and the materials used for the straps are really not designed well. Nothing is more frustrating that to constantly have to pull it up or retighten on a long hike. The Ultimate Direction is built with far superior material & is very light weight. You can use Hydro Flask water bottles to keep cold water. I found that a lot of the packs you have to use their water bottles. Like the small pockets on the hipstraps & it has plenty of room in the back two pockets, with dividers in the smaller back pocket. Has draw cords on the back if you want to stow your collapsable hiking poles.

A good compromise for short hikes

I do a lot of short (1-2 hour) hikes near home 3-4 X per week and got tired of stuffing a water bottle in my pockets, along with my wallet, keys and cellphone. I have 3 different-sized Osprey packs for longer hikes and bike rides, but I dislike the hassle of filling up--and cleaning out--a water bladder for these short jaunts. I've tried a few hip-belt water carriers in the past, but generally found them uncomfortable and unstable. I recently purchased this one, knowing that if it didn't work out, REI's return policy would bail me out. I've done 3-4 hikes with this now (total of 12-16 miles) and I'm giving it a qualified recommendation. I use both water bottles, to keep the load balanced. It cinches up fairly well, although I wish they had used an elastic-type material for belt itself--I tried a few of that type at the store and prefer the elastic flexibility a lot. I put my wallet, keys, money in the smaller pocket. I use the larger compartment to stuff a down vest or light jacket AND my Patagoia Houdini light rain jacket into the main compartment. Two additional pockets on the hip belt hold my cell phone and maybe a snack. I haven't weighed this "loaded" pack, but I'd guess it's between 5-7 lbs. In order to get the pack to sit up on my hip bones, I have to tighten the belt right around my mid-section, not my hips, which is a feature I don't like, but works OK. This is another reason why I wish Ulitmate Direction had used elastic. When shopping for this, I looked at a few smaller, more basic hip packs that carried only one bottle, but those seem to be aimed more at the trail runner market. I wanted something that could hold the extra jacket(s) as well as get the water bottle and misc stuff out of my pants pockets. As far as how the pack sits/performs during a hike--it's pretty good. Better than similar models I tried the past. I prefer the way a true "back" pack supports the load, and I COULD just put a water bottle or two in the side pockets of my Osprey bike pack and be just as well off, but I do kind of like the simplicity and quality of this pack. Pro's: Light. Well constructed. Roomy (enough). Good water bottles. Attractive. I got the midnight blue one with contrasting orange seams. Comfort/fit is good--although not outstanding. Con's: COST! I think $75 for this is leaning toward the outrageous side. There are similarly-designed packs around for $20. I'm not equating these with the quality of this UD unit, but this isn't 3X better, in any objective way. This kind of thing is endemic to the entire outdoor equipment industry. Some of the extra cost is quality, but I'm pretty sure a lot of it is marketing/branding. Needs an elastic belt. Hope this helps anyone considering this pack. STP

WAHOO! Love this pack!

I have a 15+ year old Ultimate pack that is the best I've ever found (they don't make exactly the same style anymore). And ended up buying the Osprey waist pack a year or so ago because I wanted something a little lighter for summer (and to try to keep my old pack longer - for use in winter). The Osprey never fit well. And I finally found this new Kaviti in REI yesterday. When I tried it on, I knew right away. This one has a much more comfortable waist strap that I can keep at the perfect location - at the top of my hip bones - without having it ride up (like the Osprey always did). I used it this morning on our usual hike, and it performed beautifully. I'm so thrilled with this pack. I can also carry a thermos (we sometimes bring tea) and use my favorite water bottles from Nalgene (a narrow one with a flip top). The design on this pack is perfect for short day hikes. It also has plenty of spots for extras, including the visor I usually keep attached to the pack until I need it.

Works great; does what it's supposed to do.

The waistpack works great. It took a while to figure out how the nipples on the bottles work. And the waist belt does not stay tight. But after working through those problems it's been a great tool. Easy to carry. The waist belt is wide enough to be comfortable. And the pouch carries more than a sufficient supply of whatever you'd need.

overpriced

The compartments are the perfect size and it's a very comfortable fit. The water bottles aren't very user-friendly. I find it easier to unscrew the lid and drink than to get the nipples pulled out. Overall, it's a great little pack but overpriced by about $25.

Perfect hiking companion

This waistpack is light and comfortable. Even with two full water bottles, the waistband is wide enough to stay super comfortable. The elastic bungees that hold the water bottles are strong enough to survive the hike into Oneonta Falls. awesome sauce!

Great Waistpack

I bought this pack to alternate with my Osprey daypack when I get tired of having a full pack on my back. I cannot say enough about it. I am a regular hiker in the Great Smoky Mountains hiking up to 25 miles for day hikes. This pack is perfect. It has two larger pockets in the back which holds my first aid supplies, food, phone, ID, keys. Then it has two smaller pockets on the front of the waist band which is perfect for items that you want at an easy reach like chapstick. The two water bottles are a perfect size and nicely weighted and stay in place with the elastic straps. To top it off there is some elastic straps on the back that you can tuck a windbreaker, gloves or anything else into. I paid full price for this pack and after seeing it went in sale, didn't care a bit, because although it seems a bit expensive it is well worth it. Oh, and did I tell you the waist straps are large and sit perfectly for a comfortable, snug fit. I am 5'6" and 130 pounds and it worked well. Don't think twice about purchasing this pack, you will love it! I more than likely won't go back to my Osprey unless it's a colder hike and I need to tote more clothes.
