Best day pack for a bad back

I hurt my back about 7 months ago and wanted to find a pack that put as little weight as possible on my shoulders; all the weight on my waist. This pack has an internal frame and met my needs. There are very few other packs available that fit like this one. I hike with it about 5 times a week. However, I do have a few issues with the pack: 1) the pack stands a bit taller than a frameless pack and makes it tougher going through thick brush or tight rock scrambles; 2) I much prefer Platypus hydration systems to Camelbak (I don't get having the fill cap on the side of the bag vs. the top). That said, this is the pack I always use these days.

Easy to fill with water

I've been using his as a day pack for local walks in San Antonio Texas for about a year. I really really love the water filler system. Most packs, you need to remove the bag from the backpack. This has a nice separate zippered entrance that allows you to simply pop a lid off the water bladder and fill it while still in the bag. In addition, I fill the bag with about 30 pounds of metal weights for my local (5-9 miles) walks to the library, or around town. The bag is robust enough to handle that. My previous pack could not stand the strain of the additional metal weights. Also my daughter has used it as an overnight pack. Great backpack for short trips, love it!

Great for Casual Walks or Off-Trail Scrambles

I have had this pack for almost a year and it is the first pack in my collection I grab for now. This pack with its suspended mesh back is ideal for hot humid weather casual hikes. Yet it can snug up, be very stable and balances well for scrambling and rock hopping. The hip belt and shoulder straps are very comfortable. They fit very well over outer layers and rain gear. I am very pleased with how comfortable it was when I spent 10 days straight scrambling off trail in the Rockies in Colorado on a geology and mines jaunt last fall. The weight distribution is outstanding. The construction and materials are everything I'd expect in a first tier pack. It stood up to several days of abuse carrying at least 50 pounds of rocks (in heavy nylon sacks) up and down steep inclines and shows no signs of stress or separation in the material, seams and straps. It is more water resistant than I thought, but it is not waterproof. A few ziplock baggies and dry bags fixes that. It does dry quickly. I really like the new water reservoir design because it brings the water weight down to the bottom of the pack where it carries better and is more stable. The only down side I've experienced is the ergonomic shape of the bag makes packing some bulky items (big rocks and large camera bags) tricky. Then again, its the ergonomics of this bag that makes it become part of you.

Great Hydration Pack - The Best!

I bought this at REI today and can't wait to try it out. I have already loaded it up with all the things I usually carry and there is so much room to spare. With my old hydration pack, it took everything I could do to pack the routine and absolutely essential emergency supplies. This pack is so comfortable on the back. It is about time someone made a hydration pack that actually has some pack capabilities.

Excellent desert backpack

I hike a lot in the desert so a good, light-colored, light-material, hydration pack is imperative. I chose the CamelBak Pursuit 24 LR because of the breathable back/frame and the quality of past Camelbak products I've used. This backpack is incredibly back-friendly, light, and well built. It is large enough for lightweight back-country backpacking, or a long day trip. I like the comfort and how it sits on my back. There is a lot of space in the pockets, sinch straps, and loops to hook gear on. I just used it as an overnight pack and it did a great job. The light fabric and color also work well in sunny environments. The lower-back water reservoir works well for weight distribution. The only drawback is the small pocket on the belt strap. Not sure why it is so small and why there is only one. Otherwise, I really like this backpack - very high quality - we'll see how it holds up!

I really wanted to like this pack because I generally like Camelbak products. However, I couldn't bring myself to like this pack as a primary daypack for long trail days. This is not a hikers backpack, more of a hydration pack with some storage. First, the Pursuit is a 21L capacity with the additional 3L being added b/c of the bladder, it is not 24L of storage. Packing the 10 essentials pretty much stuffs this pack. Second, the belt is not really designed to distribute weight to your hips as much as hold the pack on, at least not for me. Third, the mesh pocket on the outside started to tear slightly on the first use. Finally, the badder position makes it impossible to load a filled bladder into the storage area while the pack is loaded. So, unless you have a filter with the adapter to link the out hose directly to your quick link system, you will need to unload your pack on the trail in order to get a refill from a cool waterfall or river. REI was great and stood behind their return policy. I traded this in for a well known pack maker that designs packs for hikers.

I bought this prior to a three week vacation to New Zealand. Did a lot of trekking. I love the bladder being in the lumbar section of my back. Very comfortable. Plenty of room for snacks, rain shell, etc. The quick disconnect tubes and large mouth opening makes it a breeze to refill. It is very lightweight. I highly recommend it. I bought the blue one.

I've hiked a couple thousand miles over the past 5 years wearing this pack with much of my hikes off trail and through heavy brush in California hills and mountains. The webbing became unrepairable last year and this summer the connectors began to break. My money was well spent on this pack.

Love the wide mouth opening on the hydration bladder, easy to clean and dry. Well balanced on body, no shoulder pain. Lots of pockets, too many for me, but probably great for longer hikes.
